One Word
It’s the dawn of a new year. A time to start fresh. To review the past and look toward the future.
“I want to lose weight.”
” I will spend more time with my family.”
“I intend to eat healthy every day.”
New Year’s Resolutions. Grand plans to start the year anew. Statements that touch upon some area in our life that we’re not completely happy with. Ever done them – made New Year’s resolutions? Just like the spike in gym memberships in January of each year – followed by the decline in February, New Year’s resolutions typically fade quickly as our daily lives takes us to where we’ve always been.
Last year, I was inspired by a much different approach to New Year’s resolutions – a concept by singer/song writer/blogger Christine Kane. The idea – to come up with one word to focus on.
The idea – that this one word will connect with us at a much deeper level, and inspire us to make it become part of our daily life. That it will BE part of our true fabric. And in being part of us at a much deeper level, this word will be a guide toward the life we desire, toward doing the things that are in alignment with what this word means to us.
One word. For 2009, the word I chose was COURAGE. And in many amazing ways, that one word manifested itself in my life.

SPLASH — what does that mean to me?
As I spent some time thinking about what word really connected with me — my thoughts kept coming back to three words: adventure, action, and fun. I bounced back and forth — which one to really encompass this new year? Choosing one, felt like I was neglecting something else in me.
SPLASH!
It embodies all of these: adventure, action, and fun.
Taking action and jumping in — SPLASH!
Having fun — SPLASH!
Seeing the adventure that comes in all of life’s moments — SPLASH!
This is about not only the big SPLASHES in life, it’s really about embracing all of life’s moments — big and small and everything in between — and seeing that jumping in is really a beautiful part of life. And as much as this is about embracing life in a very physical sense, for me this also means jumping in to my own internal thoughts as well. Being with those thoughts that I have bouncing around in my head and in my heart — and taking the time to SPLASH around with them, to not ignore these thoughts in the normal-ness of daily life.
In everything that this upcoming year holds, I am ready to SPLASH around with it all!

this year my word is “balance” because 2009 found me so out of balance for so long. Moderate, calm, still, listening more than speaking, healthy, kind, giving more than taking. Pay attention to what is important. Centered. Yeah, I choose Balance.

I love your choice of word for this year, Lance. Splash is an action word with so many possibilities.
Last year, my word was outside. I managed to do several of the ideas I associated with this word, but not all of them. So, this year, in order to complete what I started last year, I’m doing the opposite, INSIDE.
Looking inside myself to find the strength to go outside my comfort zone
Looking at people from the inside out
Looking at a photo from the inside, finding that inner color that isn’t always present
Looking inside to see my own strengths instead of focusing on the weaknesses
I already do several of these in small ways, but in this new decade, looking from within helps clear the vision of what’s out, if you know what I mean.
You’ve created a warm and wonderful place here, Lance. Thanks for sharing it with everyone. 2010 is going to be a great year.

What a FUN word to concentrate on for the year — it seems to suit you so well. And in my continuing quest for simplifying everything, I just LOVE the one word concept here. So many words pop in my head right now — and therein lies the problem! haha! I am going to pick PACE. I seem to need a stead pace — of grace — to focus on. I do get so distracted I should probably pick focus for my word, but I think in the big picture I need to pace myself. These manic bits of energy tend to throw me off or exhaust me — and I don’t really want to rule out distractions because some of them are really quite lovely (some!) so yeah, give me a nice pace, a flow — oh wait, I like flow better than pace, can I change my choice? (see what I mean?)

Now that is a video after my own heart! Being the line dancer that I am, I absolutely loved that video! I also loved the post. I have seen several posts last year and now starting to this year about choosing a word as your theme for the year. For some reason I have been afraid to do this because I am afraid of failing at it. I know that sounds kinda silly but this is my life, I get scared of failing at things. This is probably why I haven’t put up a post at my own blog for months, I’ve been to scared to. If I had to choose a word right now, based on what I have just written, it would have to be Brave. Of course choosing a word is the easy part, well somewhat easy, now acting on it, that is going to be the hard part. I think I need to work on figuring out a way to go through with this for 2010. Who knows what it could lead to. I may just have to check out Christine Kane’s site, now that you and Wendi are hooked!

My word is “Embrace”–it’s already been amazing!
You know about my 2009 pursuit with Peggy, Roban, Julie and Annemarie. We had a blast! We learned from each other. I am pressing on as well to choose another word. I choose Gratitude. A well used, well worn word that is batted around easily by many. My approach is that what ever word we choose it should have feet. It should bring about some type of change. Your word is wonderful. SPLASH is all about action which means you will be moving.…dynamic…pursuing…never stagnate. SPLASH also means to me “spread out”, for when you splash it is not like a 10 rated “dive” where it is controlled and succinct. SPLASH is out there..of the moment…and have you ever seen a child who was splashed and they did not smile. I hope your family enjoys your SPLASHING in 2010.

Nice word, Lance! It’s an unconventional choice but you explained why you chose it so well. I like the idea of Splash! But you know me, I’ve gotten call you out on this one. You didn’t mention splashing into the pool so you can improve the swim leg of your next triathlon. (smile).

I’ve seen this word thing alot lately. I love the words people come up with to represent their year. It’s AWEsome! And the word I can’t shake is SEE. This is going to be such a memorable year for me, one I will never forget. My eyes are wide open. I will be looking outward, inwards, and up. I can’t wait to SEE this year.

My word for 2010 is VITALITY. It’s an “umbrella word” for me, much like “Splash” covers “adventure, action and fun” for you. Vitality, for me, will infuse (is infusing!) all aspects of my life, not letting me settle for draining energy anywhere this year, or if it sneaks in, goosing me in the energetic butt to get back into vitality!

Splash is such a fitting word for you, Lance. I am thrilled at all the noise you will make and the fun ripples you will make when you keep diving into life as it presents itself to you. You certainly chose a fun word and an exciting one too! So many possibilities there…
Thinking of a word and then focusing on it reminds me of a similar technique I’ve read about in several different religions. I remember reading, a few years ago, a book on Tibetan Buddihism. One thing that stuck in my mind all these years is how they have many different deities with different qualities and characteristics. When someone wishes to have more of a certain quality or characteristic in their life they spend a lot of time meditating on the deity which possesses those certain qualities or characteristics.
Choosing a word to focus on for a year seems like a great way to bring into one’s life all the things that word represents. Pretty cool.
I am finding it difficult to narrow it down to one word. The major contenders are : Faith, Encourage, and at the risk of sounding cheesy.…..Love.

Thanks for sharing the one word idea Lance! After taking a look at the newly created vision boards I made yesterday (they are a work in progress) my word would have to be CHALLENGE.
I have set myself some challenges and I am truly excited about them. If some of them (or all of them) come off, then it will be an awesome year. If not, then it was a ‘challenge’ just trying and I would have learnt something from it all.

My word was Hospitality for this year.. The first half of the year was a lot of struggle and it didn’t feel like I could focus too much on it but the last month or so it is right at the center and I am so happy living into the fullness of this gift!

I am REALLY glad you commented on this today — for two reasons. It’s GREAT to hear about your word, and where you are at with it. And…it’s really good for me to revisit this post myself, and really think about how the year has been for me so far (in terms of SPLASHING!).
This year has had many splashes…as well as a few moments, too, where I have stepped away from the splash (and that’s what is really good for me to think about…why that happened).
