Do you ever sense how truly connected we are to one another?  How our actions, however big or small, however positive or negative…in some way, impact others?

The Levity Project:  Car Dancing Micro Movement

I have been working with Katie West and Ina Lukas, of The Levity Project, in creating the first Levity Project Micro Movement.

Car Dancing:  A celebration!  People from around the world joining together.  In their corner of the world…dancing!  In cars.  Down sidewalks.  In homes.  This video is their dance.  It's much more than that though.  This video is our dance….for all who watch it. Celebrate!  And let that dance in you, whatever it is, take new steps into what is possible!

What Does This All Really Mean?
Both Katie and Ina, from here at The Levity Project, played such important roles in taking this car dancing concept and envisioning what it could become.  For me personally, I know that doing this became much more than just some little dance in the car at a stoplight on my way through a day.

So, what has this all meant to Katie and Ina?  Read below, as I take a few minutes to ask them some of questions on the car dancing micro movement.

1.  What were your expectations going into this car dancing micro-movement?
Katie: My hope was to have fun and to spread the idea that by allowing ourselves to be seen having fun, we give others the permission to do the same.  I also envisioned the video and thought about people watching it together and smiling the same way they do when they see someone dancing at a stoplight.  My hope was that it would create a ripple effect of positivity that might fill in where moments of negativity had been in people’s lives.

Ina: I was hoping it would be fun and that people would have a great time celebrating their day.  I was hoping that people would be inspired by it and get to experience other bystanders be inspired by them.  But what happened as a result of it was far more profound than I ever imagined.  What I did not realize is how far this would take people out of their comfort zone.  Nor did I imagine the amount of inner change it would create for many of the participants.
2.  On this journey over the last several weeks, what have you personally experienced from your own moments of car dancing?
Katie: The idea for this micro movement came a while ago when I was dancing at a stop light.  Usually, I stopped dancing when a car pulled up next to me, but that day the music was so great and I was feeling so happy, I kept dancing.  After a moment or two, I realized that the two guys in the car next to me were not only watching me but dancing heartily along.  As we drove away, they gave me a thumbs up.  It was so touching and made me feel unexpectedly connected to the world around me.

What happened after launching the idea of The Levity Project’s Car Dancing Micro-Movement was that I started doing it more intentionally every time I was at a stoplight.  It felt like inviting people to a party that they really wanted to go to but were nervous to be the first ones to arrive.  It felt great to be the one kicking off a party at each intersection.

Ina: What I’ve found by being freer in my dance, is that it breaks down the walls between people.  We live in a car society where everyone is cruising around in their own worlds, disconnected from everyone else.  When you share the joy that comes out of you when you dance, you break through the barrier of the car shell, and you touch someone or make them smile and bring a human connection to their day.

The other day I was stopped at a red light next to a guy who had a little dog in his lap that was looking through the window at us.  Because of my new found courage and dropping of my walls, I rolled down both windows on his side, he rolled down his, and for a long two minute red light, my kids and I had a delightful conversation with the guy and oohed and aaahhed over his dog.  My kids were thrilled.  He was shining from ear to ear, and then we drove off to the rest of our days.  I will never forget that moment, and it never would have happened had I not taken part in this event.
3.  What feelings come up for you as you have watched the video's that have been shared by others?
Katie:  As I watch it, what stands out to me is this great feeling of interconnectedness.  And with that, I feel hope.  In a world where we are interconnected, no one is falling through the cracks.  We are there for each other.  We are aware that we are all a part of the same web so if one of us is not shining, the integrity of our whole web is compromised.  And in this way, it benefits us all to look out for others.   Watching this video makes me feel that this interconnectedness is possible on a global level.  This makes me feel a great sense of light-heartedness.

Ina: The first video that came in from Canada sent goosebumps up my neck.  It was that moment of, “Oh my goodness!  People are actually doing this!  And, look, they’re really happy!”  It was totally exhilarating.  Instantly I felt the sense of  knowing that it’s our own inner happiness, collectively celebrated, that has the ability to create a global shift.  The key for me was in celebrating it with purpose, knowing that all of these other people were out there dancing in their day together.  It made me realize the potential power that creating this concept of a Micro-Movement can have on global scale.  When you take away the time and location barriers, any person any where in the world can take action as an agent of social change, and be banded together with the rest of The Levity Project Players as one movement immersed in the power and importance of fun.

I love to be inspired, and each person that took part in this was an inspiration to me.  I was moved by each video because almost everyone that did this stepped out of their comfort zone.  For some people it was WAY out of their comfort zone.    But as you can see by everyone’s happiness in the video, they all received some sense of freedom from doing it.  That’s the miracle that always happens on the other side of your block.  When you let go of fear and go for it, magic happens that wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t take action with that small leap of faith.
4.  You step out your front door tomorrow morning.  What’s different, because you have “car danced” in public?  (i.e. what’s the lasting effect from doing this)
Katie:  There is this small feeling of “I can do that”.  By “car dancing”, which can feel like a step outside our comfort zone, there is a new feeling that maybe there are other things one can try in our life.  And the comfort zone becomes wider and wider and so does our life.

And I believe that a sense of contribution comes from it.  Once you see someone’s face light up because they see you car dancing and expressing that levity, it is so evident that you are the one who created that change for that person at the stoplight or wherever we are.  And as the observer drives off, they might have a smile on their face or be laughing.  Who knows what happens next?  In a better mood, do they call someone they have been thinking about and share a laugh with them?  Did an argument just end in the car next to you because they started laughing and even dancing with you?  What ripple effects just happened in the world, because one of us was willing to boldly express the joy we have within?

Ina: For me, so much has changed because of this.  When I step out my door in the morning, I am far more aware of the potential for creating celebration in each moment.  At the times when I am driving, spaced out on autopilot, lost in some looping thought of what I have to do, or what’s going on in my life, past or future, it suddenly hits me that, ”Oh, wait!  I’m alive right now in this moment and why am I not dancing?" and I crank the tunes and dance.  And I do it boldly (especially at four way stops).

It’s made me more present to the present moment, realizing that we all have our things we do on autopilot… driving to work, picking up the kids, and we often just lose ourselves in mundane thoughts in those moments.  But when you think of how you could have that same ride to work, and instead of just worrying about how you’re going to pay your bills, you can make someone else smile or brighten their day.  You’ve just created a totally different journey for yourself.  Same commute, but now you’re an agent of social change at the wheel.  Maybe that person didn’t know how they were going to pay their bills either, but they saw you dancing and they saw you in your freedom and in that moment, they felt relief.  Or even happiness.  Or even the feeling that everything was going to be OK.  THAT is powerful stuff!  I am embracing those moments now and my life is becoming more deliciously rich (and fun!) because of it.

Lance's Commentary:  You have both touched upon that "something deeper" that draws upon the voice of our soul…that dance that is within each of us.  Perhaps it's not "car dancing" for everyone.  It's there, though, within all of us…that something which brings that deeper sense of bliss.  And when we are reaching that spot within us, we DO change the world around us – in amazing and beautiful ways!

Oh, I LOVE THIS!!! Like, Zeenat, I recognized several fellow bloggers in the video, and it was great to see them as something other than gravatars. Some, though, I *thought* I recognized, but wasn’t sure. Maybe the next time you do one of these, you could include the person’s first name, so we can put 2 and 2 together and get to know more of our online friends. Bloggers can be tough to identify when they are shaking and wiggling inside of a car! 😉

Thanks for sharing and brightening my day!

Ha ha, man…. cool video, but I think I’m the only one who looks out of place dancing in an elevator lol.
It was great to see everybody else dancing, though. I think I saw you Lance, but I couldn’t tell. Hope you enjoyed the video as much as I did.

Katie West/The Levity Coach March 17, 2010 at 8:30 am

We did it, Lance! Spreading a little fun, joy, and levity in the world.
Watching it again, it is so so fun to see it through the eyes of fellow bloggers. It feels like a gift that so many participated! Thank you to all for watching and dancing and video-ing.
And THANK YOU LANCE. For being a part of The Levity Project and for sharing the vision. It is a gift to have you on the journey.

May we all continue to make a difference by being our authentic selves in this world.

(And a note: because so many people think I am Ina with my daughter in the back…..I am the last one in the video at the stop light. My kids were dancing just not visible!) 🙂

Keep laughing and dancing,

Hi Lance!
Oh this was a SUPERB giggle to start the day with! Great to see this! What a lesson in light heartedness and just letting go! LOVE IT! I bop to the music all the time in the car and see others watching me with either a look of amusement or unabashed incredulousness (is that a word?) – anyway, I really don’t care. If I cheer somebody up my mission accomplished – well my mission is accomplished for MYSELF just in the doing of it!

Hey, can you tell me what music is playing in the background? I would love to get that CD!

Thanks for, again, sharing the best of life!

Katie, Lance, Ina, dancers, and film crew – Wow!!! Awesome job to all. This was outstanding and well put together. I love the variety of clips. The enormity of all the world dancing really hit home watching this. I and my 3 girls are so proud and honored to take part. We were the only Arlington Texans, but I saw quite a few from Austin.

Tess- love the liscense plate!

Lance- you and your son soo fun!

Katie- as always – such a joy to watch.

John- your elevator gig was tremendous.

I didn’t recognize everyone but just know I think you are all creators of love and laughter. What a joy to watch. I hope this project moves far and wide across the globe.

Keep Dancing – I know I will. 🙂

Oh my Gosh… I love it! I love it! I love it!
You have to understand that to watch a video here in Cuba takes time because there are downloading issues so I don’t always get a chance to see videos. This one was worth the wait for my computer to buffer through it.
I’m putting this in my “make me smile” folder.
Lance, Katie and everyone who was involved or took part in any way in the making of this video. The timing was perfect for me as I was feeling a little blue and now, well I’m not!
You all look awesome! Great Job.

Evita March 17, 2010 at 10:29 am

Thanks again Lance, Katie and Ina for this amazing project and micro-movement. I feel that whatever stirs the heart and lifts us up to feel good and laugh and be playful is so great. We need more of this in our lives.

The video is awesome and it was such a pleasure and so fun to be a part of it. It was fun too seeing so many others who I know here in the blogosphere.

Great stuff and keep on dancing and spreading the love 🙂

Patricia - Spiritual Journey Of A Lightworker March 17, 2010 at 10:44 am

I loved it. Thanks for taking the time, Lance, to send a 2nd email about The Car Dance. I intended to watch the first one when I had more time. Because of your email, I went immediately and watched the video. I do believe that my sense of humor is what has gotten me through life as well as I am. Laughter is really magical in changing a perspective about life. I often watch America’s Funniest Videos on TV just to have a good laugh when I am feeling down or feeling really tired.

Shortly into the video, I was sitting at my computer watching and started smiling, moving, dancing with the people in their cars. Love it. Thanks.

This is FABULOUS you guys!!!!! truly amazing and inspiring, heartlifting, healing, and all-out AWESOME!

I am reminded of a time I saw an elder woman blowing bubbles (you know with a wand) out of her car window as a passenger…I laughed so hard…then started judging myself as being cruel for laughing, I thought “oh poor thing, she must have dementia”..and then my thought shifted to, “why assume that? Maybe she just wants to make people laugh and experience joy?”

Spread the love and incite riots of laughter…because it’s good for ALL of US!

Mindful Mimi March 17, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Hey Lance, Katie and Ina,
You did it. We did it. Lance you really got me out of my comfort zone for sure. And I am glad I had my boys to hide behind 🙂 But now that it’s done and out there, I love it, I am proud of it and can’t keep talking about it to others who love the idea as well. So I am sure that you will have a much larger participation should you want to redo this 🙂
Tonight I showed the final video to my boys (who are, I remind you, 2.3 and 3.10) and besides loving to watch themselves on video, they were asking who these other people were. I told them again about the whole concept and that these people were all doing the same thing we did, that they were having as much fun as we did, that they were just as crazy and normal as we were. And I think they GOT it 🙂
So THANK YOU – and I hope Levity will bring more of these worldwide calls for me to join 🙂 Glad you made Lance your ambassador – he is very good at it 🙂
Love from Luxembourg

So… I was working away diligently on my songwriting plan, all focused and such, right? When I took a little e-mail break. And what did my wondering eyes behold but a message from a Lance character, with a link that directed me over here. 🙂

And seeing as I am not supposed to be reading or commenting on blogs until Friday, I wasn’t really here, okay? I cannot play favorites amongst all you sweet bloggers. But I’ve sure been waiting for this video!!

After I hit post on this, I’m going for a little walk with the dogs.

Then back to my digital recorder song-snippet files and more slaving over my hot laptop. 🙂

btw, there was a little glitch, cannot view the video at this moment, but it could be our old malware ridden desktop computer, so I’ll have to try later or from on my laptop.

Hi Lance, Katy and Ina:

Great video…I enjoyed the spirit of spontaneity and fun in the video. It reminds me of a few times that I’ve done my own little car dance sans camera. I also love singing very loud when the windows are rolled up 🙂 In any case, this video reminds me of something that is on our local TV station WGN Channel 9…the morning news team has been doing a “Friday Dance” for years and it has been imitated by a lot of stations. It’s a great dance-filled music montage and its guaranteed for a few laughs. Thank you to everyone involved in this project…I really enjoyed this.

@Lynn – Glad to provide a bit of lightness and levity, Lynn!

I am in a daze of amazement to hear all of these incredible responses. Wow! This makes the power of it all hit home, right in my heart. I can not express my appreciation deeply enough to each of you who took part in this, whether you were on film or not. Thank you. And for those of you who sent in videos, I want you to know how exhilarated Lance, Katie and I were with each video as it came in. I had the hardest job of editing your videos down, finding the six second golden nugget in each. It was only hard because all of your videos made me so happy. In the end, what came through the most for me is how beautiful we all are when we are expressing our joy. I smile with each person I watch.

One of the many things I learned in this process is that bloggers are people who take action. Maybe it’s because you are always putting yourself out there, expressing your vulnerability to the world not knowing what response you’ll get. Maybe it’s because by writing about your life, you have to be accountable and walk the talk. Maybe that’s part of why you all jumped on board so quickly. It was also our international Laughter Yoga community that jumped right in… a group who’s used to being playful for no reason and courageous enough to do it publicly, knowing the results are profound. It was a bit like pulling teeth for many other people to do it, but what all of you who took part in this did was open up a pathway of comfort for the rest of the world. You turned what could be considered craziness into true beauty and interconnectedness. You danced on the leading edge and in doing so made it easier for everyone else to join in the next round. Thank you for being the trailblazers!

My heart goes out to each of you in deepest gratitude. Thank you. Lance and Katie, um, what can I say? I am the luckiest girl to have the two best co-conspirators in fun. You are both visionaries and I am honored to play with you, at least, when I’m not peeing my pants in laughter while playing with you.

And please, spread the celebration like wildfire! Pass on the video and let our levity bubble up in a world that is craving more buoyancy. Thank you to all of you!! Mwah!!

Lance March 18, 2010 at 1:27 pm

@Wilma – Music and dance can do a world of good, can’t they! And…whether you have a video camera or not, you can always still dance, right!! Joy and love to you, Wilma…and much dancing!!

@Hilda – I know you are with on this, in spirit!! And that’s awesome, right there!!! And…definitely this is so fun to watch!!! Woohoo!

@Hilary – This was a blast, Hilary!! And wonderful to hear you are sharing this with your mother! Part of the real beauty of this is in bringing joy to others…so that’s awesome!!!! Breaking down barriers!! I love it!!

@Jeanne – Thank you so much, Jeanne!

@Stacey Shipman – Stacey!!! Sure!! I have to follow YOU on the video…the lifetime expert car dancer!!! And you were singing too!!!! Okay – you are simply awesome dancing behind the wheel!! Keep rockin’ it!!

@Cheryl – Awesomeness!! Thanks so much for sharing that Cheryl! And that’s because of all the fabulous commenters here (like YOU!!)!!!!

@Liz – Hey Liz!!!! I know!! Every time I watch it, I smile!! Sunshine to the world!! Through a few dance moves in the car – how awesome is that, anyway!!!!! Liz, thanks so much…YOU are AWESOME!!!

@Nathalie – Nathalie!! Thank YOU!!!! And seeing people you know…all sorts of GREAT!!! Keep dancing in all your travels, sweet friend…however you get there and wherever you go!!!

Lance March 18, 2010 at 1:37 pm

YOU, sweet friend, are one very amazing person!!! I look to you, and see this real sense of adventure…for living life. Really “living”. And maybe even more than that – there is this whole sense of joy in your being. You radiate smiles, joy, and love!! So…do you want to talk about lucky??? That is ME…hanging out with YOU!!! Whether that’s a late night phone call trying to figure this all out, or crazy emails that veer off in some strange direction….or experiencing real moments of bliss out in the world…YOU are an amazing and gifted soul. Of that, I am sure!

And!!! I take that as a compliment about you peeing in your pants!!!!!! Okay…and I can’t contain my laughter as I type this!! You, crazy friend (did you see, I switched from sweet to crazy???), are just what our world needs!!! Keep on being crazy, wacky, silly, goofy….keep on being YOU!!!!

You, awesome friend…rock my world!!!

Mwah! Mwah!

Lance March 18, 2010 at 1:49 pm

What an amazing group of people who have stopped by here to view the video, to share their comments, to participate in the creation of this video, and just all the support that has been shown!

Our world needs more of all of you…out there, living true to who you are. I sense that very much, in the comments, this real joy that is within all of us! When we’re at that spot, dancing our dance…the world responds in beautiful ways!

So, to all you amazing souls…ALL of you are AMAZING!! And that dance is there, within each of YOU! Live your life with boldness! Be the YOU who is there, within YOU!!

And dance a few car dances along the way…

Joy and amazing goodness to all!!!

Lance March 18, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Katie and Ina,
Just so you two know…I am the lucky one here. Living in moments of play and celebration with both of you is like candy for the sugar addict. Except that it’s much deeper than that. And that’s what I love about all of this and how it reaches deeper into what life is really about … and the experiences we have, however large or small, through this thing called life. Making those experiences touch a deeper part of our soul is a beautiful thing. Both of you shine this out into the world! What a amazing gift you both share!!!!

Love and ALL kinds of dancing…always,

Yasmine March 18, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Lance this is so absolutely inspiring! I was smiling! I think what I loved most was seeing where everyone was from, for that created even more a sense of interconnectedness. I was like Waterloo, Ontario Canada WOW! that’s my other home and Toronto Canada and just seeing it skip around like that and feeling the energy was awesome!
I think what most spoke to me was the “celebration of life and one another”… I can see how it breaks barriers down and it is an invitation to join in!
thank you for sharing this! It is so neat because just this morning before I logged on, I mentioned something to my sweetie about dancing off the stress today at work .. cause we are both tired lately from projects and stuff.. and just imagining us doing a jig in the day to get more energy to get through it even as I was laughing in that moment of thinking it and sharing it, I felt my body come a bit more alive and felt better instantly –and he smiled too! So now I know all day he can think of that when he is tired or feeling he needs a break. It was neat that this happened right before I found this post also! 😉 So in a way we too joined in! 😉 thanks! hugs, Jenn

@Katie-ROO!! – I am there!!!! Zippity doo-dah….zippity-day…

@Barbara – Rock stars!! I love it, Barbara!! I know! Every time I watch this…I smile! There’s all sorts of happy in that video!!

@Jenn – Hey Jenn!! And to see places you know – how cool!!! Seeing all the places, from all over the world…is inspiring to me. I get this real feeling of how we are connected. And that’s to everyone – all across this great globe! When we take down those barriers – language, country, race, religion, age, etc, etc – we are left with a connection to soul. And that shines through, here in dance, so beautifully. And it is all very rejuvenating…just like dancing in your living room, or down the sidewalk, or wherever. Jenn…you were definitely with us in spirit!!!

@Karl – Hey Karl!! I think not, too…car dancing and frowning are two things that just don’t go together! Let the smiles continue!!! And…it’s great having you a part of this – way fun!!!! Rock on, buddy!!!

@Peggy – Thank YOU!!!

@Jody – Share away, awesome friend!! That bliss is there within all of us…and when we find it, in whatever rings true to our hearts…that is a beautiful place to be! Thank so much for being here and sharing in the celebration!! You are awesome, Jody!!

I am completely blown away by this video! All these people show such amazing spirit, and it’s actually quite moving. This project is so genius in its simplicity! I can’t even begin to explain how participating in my little way from my corner of the world has affected my life. I’ve always been a person who’s looked for an opportunity to shake things up and bring a little craziness and humor into any situation. But that has been more about hiding who I am than showing who I am. In doing this silly little thing -and having my husband complain because he didn’t see the point at all- I found such joy in celebrating life and being ME. Thank you for giving us an excuse to live a little!

Of course being vulnerable is brave, and joy should be expressed, so thanks for the delightful reminder.

Lance March 24, 2010 at 7:07 am

@J.D. Meier – Who knew this video could also be a dance lesson video!!!! I love it!!

@John Rocheleau – Hi John. Especially when you are doing this, dancing or whatever, in what might not be considered the “usual” place for it to happen – it really can feel vulnerable. Shoot, it can feel that way even on a dance floor, especially if you are the first person out there! Getting “out there” and doing it, though, is one step toward letting your inner light shine. That’s what I really love about this video, is how it touches upon our soul, and how there is a “dance” in all of us… It’s great to have you here today, John!!

Kurt March 29, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I don’t dance, so much as drum…in the carwash line. Nothing like putting the car in park, and playing triplets on the steering wheel, along with a thick book as the bass drum. If you ever decide to do that video, let me know.
