“Joy is not in things; it is in us” ~ Richard Wagner

Today, I’m hanging out with the very awesome Brandi Reynolds over at the Joy Rebellion.  Brandi writes about the joy rebel within each of us, and offers weekly missions to help bring that out.  Today, she’s sitting down and asking me some questions on what this all means in my life.

So what is the ‘joy rebel’ concept all about?  It’s about being uniquely and authentically you.  What’s it mean to me?  Check it out right here!

And while you’re there, a couple of recent posts by Brandi include:

The Unofficially Official Joy Rebel Day

Thank you Brandi!  You ARE a rebel, and with a cause that brightens the world many times over!  Keep shining your light, you’re making our world a better place every day!

Lance writes stories from his heart, aiming to inspire and motivate, as you align more fully with YOUR true peak. I find joy interesting. As I understand it, you are still can feel joyous in the midst of difficult times. I’m not sure I have experienced that but maybe you have Lance. We seem to connect joy and happiness but they are different. How would you differentiate the two?

  7. J.D. Meier says:

Great interview and I like how you’re quick to share your lessons and insights that are down to Earth.

@Writer Dad — Thanks much Sean!

@Positively Present — Hi Dani. Thanks for checking this out. Brandi has done an excellent job of cultivating joy, and finding all sorts of ways to express that! It really is an honor for me to be there today.

@Caroline — Hi Caroline! Joy’s a pretty great thing, isn’t it! And Brandi is one awesome lady who spreads joy in so many ways!

@Sami — Hi Sami. A rebellion of a pretty great kind! Now…where did you put your camera, so you can get a picture in the face paint (I’m waiting…)!!

@Rupal — Hi Rupal! You ARE a joy rebel, no doubt!! I’m in great company, being around you!!

@Laurie — Hi Laurie. Hmmm…I guess if I had to differentiate joy and happiness — I would say that joy might be more if a quality from within, while happiness might be more the expression of the from within. If this is the case, then we can find joy in difficult times (as maybe we are satisfied with how we handled a difficult situation — there could be joy there) while there may not be happiness — the expression of that — since it might be hard to be happy about the difficultness of the situation. While this is just my take on this, there are some grey lines in all of it too.

@J.D. Meier — Thanks much J.D., and thank you for reading it all — I appreciate it very much!

@Giovanna — Hi Giovanna. Thanks for stopping by today!

@Stacey / Create A Balance — Hi Stacey! Thanks so much — and it’s great to wear this badge — “Joy Rebel”! I’m loving it!!

Lance, I said it over on my other blog but I wanted to say it here too-I think it says something about your presence that so many amazing people in this community already know your wonderful, positive blog. The comments on my blog towards your interview are so wonderfullly sweet and encouraging.

Laurie-I absolutely agree with you. One thing about my joy rebellion is I try to make it clear that connecting with joy isn’t about espousing happy clappy crap if you aren’t feeling it or sugar coating things. I believe our pivot point-our true nature is joy. Happiness is an emotion, a valid emotion but one that is within a wide array of emotions (anger, bewilderment, disappointment, contentment, etc). Joy is deeper than an emotion, which is transient. That’s all my opinion anyway–

  18. Hi Lance,

That was another fabulous interview. Brandi asked the perfect questions which gave us more insight into why you do what you do, and why you are as you are.

I love the part where you said, “See the possibilities in life, not the impossibilities”. Using that attitude can certainly make our world a whole lot brighter.

Hi Lance .. your blog is a great place to be .. and I’m now going to rock over to Brandi’s site .. keep working at the press ups .. sounds like there’s a little work to be done there!!

I too feel like a joy rebel and love my life .. just making my mother happy through her last days is so important (long ones they may be) .. and so worth it .. she’s given me a way forward to the future .. without sharing her experience I’d have never moved in this direction & for that I am so grateful ..

@Somebody called Jannie — Brandi rocks (and so do you!!)! When we were picking planets to live on — yep, we chose a winner!

@Dan and Deanna — Brandi asked some great questions — and they were fun to answer! Glad you liked it!

@Brandi — Thank you. And I mean that very deeply. It really is an honor to be sharing some space on your site for this interview. You have a real gift of bringing out the joy in others — so, many thanks to Christine Kane for the introduction! You’ve definitely had me more focused on the joy in my life — “leader of the rebel pack” Brandi!

@Tess — Tess!! Thank you! And do you know what — I happen to think the same of you — you rock — as does everything I see that you come in contact with. I’m better for knowing you…

@Nadia — Hi Nadia. It’s always great having your upbeat and smiling attitude here Nadia! Thank you! Joy definitely rocks!!!

@Srinivas — Thanks much! Looking forward to having you as part of the community here.

@Liara — Hi Liara. This is a great point, Liara. Being open to joy is the first step in really and deeply experiencing it.

@Barbara — Hi Barbara. It was tons of fun to work with Brandi on this — she aksed some questions that made me really think, and that alone was good for me to do. Sharing them on her site was an honor. We do limit ourselves too much, I believe. I know that I do anyway. It’s so easy to look at something and not see what can be, only what has been. Yet, possibilities are endless!

@Hilary — Hi Joy Rebel Hilary! You’re doing a great thing with your mother — she’s lucky to have you in her life. Very awesome — as difficult as some days may be — you are most definitely providing joy — and in a very special way. A joy rebel indeed, you are!

  21. Hi Lance,

I LOVE Brandi! So glad to see that you are giving her kudos out here on this post!
