Live A Life Of Love

by John Spence on · 9 comments

I am giving a speech in a few days at the TEDx event at the University of Florida and they have asked me to talk about "The MOST Important Thing I Have Ever Learned." I plan to share three key ideas with the 1,600 or so attendees…

1. You become what you focus on and like the people you surround yourself with. Whatever you fill your mind with – whatever you watch, read, listen to, and think about… and who you choose to spend your time with, will pretty much determine what your life will look like a decade from now!

2. Ask For HELP.  It is NOT weak to admit that you are in over your head, that you are confused, that you do not what to do… that you need some help. It takes a great deal of courage to finally face that fact that you cannot do it all alone. But here is the neat thing… once you learn to ask for help your life will get much easier and more enjoyable because people who love and respect you will willingly offer you all of the help they can give – and that is a beautiful thing my friend, a beautiful thing indeed.

3. The ONLY measure that counts in life is how much love you can give, create and receive. The amazing thing is that you can give and give and give love… and you will have even more love left to give away the very next day.  You have an endless supply… and you always will. Is that cool or what? And lest you think that receiving love is selfish, sometimes the greatest way to show love is to allow others to give their love to you. That is really cool too!

So I leave you with my favorite passages on love from "The Prophet" by the amazing Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

John, Congratulations on the TEDx opportunity! Your 3 points are very good, especially the asking for help one. I always thought it was a Midwestern thing that prevents us for asking for help we need it. For whatever reason, it is hard to do at times, but people are eager to help where they can. Best wishes, and thanks! Jon

I love these 3 key ideas for living a great life and thank you for sharing them here!

I practice all 3 of these ideas in my life every day, and since doing so my life experience has been happier and more fulfilling.

My favorite of these today is the measure of the love I can give, create, and receive. When I think of love, I do not think only of romantic or familial love, I think of love of compassion, kindness, geniune caring, and respect.

I recognize and honor the interconnectedness of all people and all things, and how can I not love them all, even if just a little bit. We are all deserving of love, and I don’t have to know you to know this, so I will love you as if I knew you.

John-3 excellent points made. You’re right of course, love is the universe’s language of unlimited power and the only way, in my opinion, to live the purposeful, meaningful life. Funny old thing that it takes us a while to appreciate and learn how to truly love ourselves (not in the egotistical way) and nurture ourselves so we can give it freely and in doing so see our cup spills over.
All the best with the Tedx talk…awesome.

Nice, John! To your first point, my life is now overflowing with positive people, things and experiences, and it’s because ten years ago I started on a path of focusing only on that which raised my vibration — which brought me love. I live an amazing life and am so thankful every single day!

I also adore Khalil Gibran…one of the greats.

Have an awesome time in Florida!

Just like a Scottish proverb: “Give and take makes good friends.” Same as love. We used to think that it’s always better if we give, we help and we support the others. But let’s not forget the beauty of receive and appreciate what we’re given. Love and be loved, help and be helped~

Wonderful message! I spent years resisting the first tip: not wishing to “release” connections that were full of compromise or not energetically matched, one can only imagine that my life was full of compromise and my energy was “stuck” because those around me weer not matched.
I spent years resisting the second tip as well, as a matter of fact am only now able to ask for help when necessary. I was an amazing giver, and didn’t realize that not receiving was a block to flow..and also how empowering to be surrounded by “all that one needs” because when we are asking for help, we are opening our hearts beyond what we know–expansion in a wonderful way!
And I love the poem, “The Prophet” has always been a favorite.
May you enjoy your time in FL:)
