RAOKA: Kindness

Kindness

“Kindness, like a boomerang, always returns.” ~ Author Unknown

Preface:  Random Acts of Kick Arse is a movement to bring more of {monthly theme} into our lives, and the lives of those around us.

October Theme:  Kindness.  Find ways to incorporate more kindness into the world.

The Results:  Kindness.  I suppose it could really be an endless list of ways to bring some “good” to someone else.  Kindness is a pretty broad term.  How to really focus on this?  Hmmm…  It seems easy, and then…well…daily life kicks in.  What I found was that is was easy to “forget” this focal point for the month.  Caught up in my own daily life, this idea of kindness took a backseat.  Then I’d remember it.  And I’d be more purposeful, more deliberate…until, well…I wasn’t.  If I were in school I’d give myself a B, or maybe a C.  There’s room for improvement, and the biggest improvement for me is in making each monthly theme more of a focal point.  Lesson Learned:  Without focus, it’s all too easy to do what I’ve always done.

I still hope that I’ve stepped out of October and into November having left a little more kindness in the world.  What I do know is that throughout the month, I experienced great kindness from others, and I think that’s an important point to think about too.  How often do we really appreciate the kindness shown to us?  Do we sometimes miss it?

With that in mind, this month I highlight just a couple of the many moments where I witnessed beautiful kindness.

Moment #1
Through the month of October, I had the privilege of working with Joanna Sutter, from Fitness and Spice, on creating an e-book to raise money for breast cancer research (we’ve raised almost $1000!!).  Joanna shined in so many amazing and kind ways all month.  It began with her enthusiasm, and that kindness rolled into her doing the lion’s share of putting the e-book into a completed format.  I know it was a lot of work, and she did it all without complaint (and making my life so much easier!) — and put up with my calls from early morning into the late evenings.  Joanna — you are a kindness superstar!

Moment #2
Through her writing, I witnessed deep kindness from friend Angelia Sims, of Living, Loving, Laughing… Everything from participating and raising money to fight diabetes, to volunteering to help women at a homeless shelter.  True examples from Angelia of kindness in action, and in ways that directly help people — out there on the front lines of kindness!  And all of it done from the heart.  Angelia — you are a kindness superstar!

Moment #3
A coworker, Rebecca, with whom I’ve worked on a project the last several months.  Rebecca worked tirelessly to see this project come together — highlighted by culmination into a final product in October.  This was Rebecca’s “baby”, and I was involved to support making it happen all through the process.  At the completion, I suggested lunch to celebrate.  She insisted upon paying (after I asked her out to lunch!).  A small act (of many throughout the project).  Spoken from a sincere and caring heart.  And something not at all required.  Rebecca — you are a kindness superstar!

Moment #4
My wife, Lora.  October became a crazy month, and it consumed me.  Through it all, Lora was there to pick up the pieces, make sure everything happened at home — and there to listen when I started to “whine”…  That included when I was ready to throw in the towel on some volunteer activities, and she stepped in to get it all organized.  And that made all the difference in the world.  Lora — you are a kindness superstar!

What is Random Acts of Kick Arse (RAOKA)?  With the idea that there are so many ways we can do small things to change the world for good, Sami, from Life, Laughs, and Lemmings took an idea she had and created this movement.  The movement:  A new theme to focus on each month, bringing a little more good to the world.  The movement started in October 2009, with a core group of participants:

Melissa from Operation NICE
Lori from Jane Be Nimble
Dani from Positively Present
Brandi from Joy Rebel
Sami from Life, Laughs, and Lemmings

Each month a topic will be chosen to focus on, and then at the start of the next month, the participants will write about their experiences from the previous month.

Interested in joining the movement?  Contact Sami for details.

November Theme:  Beauty (as chosen by Brandi from Joy Rebel)

    Hi Lance
You might give yourself a B, however I have noticed kindness all over the place from you.
All your comments you leave everywhere, taking time to email me that I won that gorgeous book from Jason and Kim named ‘There is an adult in my soup’ and you even sent it in your crazy month.
All the posts you wrote this month that made a difference and contribute to global warming and then emailing people about your project with Joanna.
Hmm, should I go on and on about your kindness that in my eyes deserve more than a B?
BTW I think we should be kind and give that marking of our efforts a miss for the rest of our lives, what do you think?
Now one thing though, have you been kind to yourself????

The rest of this week I have committed to turn not so beautiful thoughts into beautiful thoughts to stick with this month’s theme of beauty and as I did not do last month’s RAOKA I cannot report on my experiences.

    Love Wilma

  4. I was totally expecting a different kind of post, more of a here’s-all-the-awesome-stuff-I-did post. I noticed that neither Dani nor Jane felt comfortable discussing exactly what they did either. I think that says something really interesting.

So if you can’t, I WILL…you were AWESOME getting that e-book together!

  5. J.D. Meier says:

It sounds like you’ve experienced the boomerang in full force and the stage is set for momentum.

Beautiful highlights and it looks like kindness superstars are contagious — and that’s a good thing.

  6. Lance, one ‘beauty’ to notice…the whole RAOKA concept. ;)
As for a moment of kindness from October, I can find some I’ve made happen, and others that have happened to me. I’m glad to know that October was the month to focus on kindness, but I think I’d like to make RAOKA a serial effort. Like the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” each succeeding month I hope (for me) can include all of the focuses to date.
I also think your B4C ebook was more of an A+ focus on kindness — and thank you on behalf of those who will benefit from that idea, and on behalf of those who will benefit from the ripples of that idea.
For November’s challenge, to find beauty in the ordinary world, be beauty in the ordinary world — I’m in.

  10. Great post reminds me of paying for someones order through a drive through. This happened last year in such a way it hit the news

Hi Lance .. I had clicked in that October was kindness month — perhaps understandable .. now I can catch up and I’d love to participate with one of your monthly concepts — so I’ll contact Sami and ask her to include me ..

You are so good with your words to us all as we blog away happily and your comments are always pertinent and I love reading them .. the Blog 4C book is such a great idea .. and I congratulate you on putting the project together and actually getting it done & busted — fantastic .. now I must work out how to get the ‘logo’ across to my own blog — & I’m sure you’ve told us somewhere. I’ll have a search around ..

Kindness .. well I did release an old lady from the lavatory this week .. on my way to my uncle’s funeral! we are meant to laugh on occasions .. she was grateful! I have spent another day in the hospital with my mother — fortunately this was a day visit — last time we went for the same thing it was six weeks .. my health is shell shocked!

  15. Lori says:

    Lance!!
First, I love the quote. It is really so true!
Second, I find it utterly amazing, and so Lance-like that you focused on those around you. Instead of looking at this project in regards to YOU, you focused on those AROUND you. I find that just so special and loving.
And, Lance, you are the KING when it comes to kindness. You ooze kindness, so I can’t think of any way you can become even just a tiny speck kinder; if you did you would no longer be human and would be back with all your homies in the clouds. (lol)

Seriously, I love how Sami’s project blossomed, I love reading everyone’s posts and how each person perceived RAOKA from his or her own perspective (in the comments, too), and I look forward, every month, to see how you’ve incorporated RAOKA into your world.
    You rocka, Lance!

The kind people in my life have been my parents. They came to help us with the baby and they’ve been nothing but awesome. My mom cooks and cleans. My dad fixes up all the broken things around our house. They are so awesome. I just feel so grateful.

  20. Evita says:

Lance, I have to so agree with some of the other comments, if someone looked up the definition of kindness in the dictionary, I picture your face there.

I have seen you go above and beyond the call of “duty” and spill out kindness wherever you go or are. You really give a lot of yourself — and like Wilma also mentioned…don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Love or kindness for self has to come first before you attend to others. This way what you give or share with others, will be that much more powerful and meaningful.

So don’t forget to take some time for yourself, eat good, sleep good, exercise and all those other things that make you happy and your life special.

As for beauty — what an amazing theme! And this is good timing in a way, as I think it will be a little more challenging given November’s usual greyness — we will get that much more creative with what and where beauty can really be. Despite the weather outside, I truly believe today that beauty is all around us in more forms than we could have ever imagined!

  21. Lance, I think it’s clear from the comments that you are kindness incarnate! Giving yourself anything other than an A+++ just wouldn’t be cricket (Aussie for “just wouldn’t be right”). Your kindness crosses oceans and countries in ways you perhaps don’t realize.

As for your focus on the kindness that came to you this month, that was a GREAT way to interpret this month’s theme. Love it! Interestingly, I found the same thing, I noticed a lot of kindness came my way too. I’m not sure if it was me being more aware of kindness because of RAOKA or if it was a case of getting back what I was giving out. Either way, it was a reminder of how lucky I am.

  22. Lance, you are kickin’ arse! Seriously, you are the best at looking at situations or concepts from every angle. I agree, being kind and extending kindness is super important, but it is equally important as you pointed out, that we express thanks for someone else’s kindness to us. Great job here!! I hope November is less crazy and filled with all kinds of warm and cozy emotions! :) Jodi

  25. Keith says:

    Hello Lance,

You know, I have been blogging for almost one year. In that year I have met many people online and feel as though I have made some new friends. Among those people is an individual who, even before all of this RAOKA stuff, I would easily classify as a kind and giving individual. That person is you Lance. I have been influenced by your example many times so, don’t get all cocky or anything (LOL) but keep being you man!

Seriously, the E-Book alone was an awesome act of kindness. I have a feeling you and I share a trait and that’s being a little hard on ourselves sometimes. Never fear, you’re doing great Lance.

Hi Lance: You’re absolutely right that it’s important to acknowledge all of the people who have been kind to us. My sister is very kind; I always leave her house with chocolates, bananas, little toys (my nephews always get lots of stuff at the birthday parties they go to and I get to keep some of the loot), and so on. About two days ago I shared my umbrella with an elderly gentleman who didn’t have one, I guess that’s my most recent act of kindness. I think you get an “A” for kindness Lance. :-)

@Wilma — Hi Wilma. You are really wonderfully kind. Thank you, so much, for your support — it means the world to me! To your question of have I been kind to myself? Hmm…I’m thinking I could do better there too. I’ll focus on this…(I will!). Again, know that I deeply appreciate YOU, and your friendship here.

@Yum Yucky — Well…you know what I think.…I think YOU are not giving yourself enough credit. Josie, you shine kindness through friendship in so many amazing ways! And that is big time kick arse!! For real!

@Zeenat — Hi Zeenat. Woohoo — great to have you aboard this RAOKA project! Okay, you too, Zeenat, are too kind. See, it just shows in your words here today. Thank YOU, I’m deeply honored by all that you’ve said.

@Hayden — Hi Hayden. You know…I found it difficult to write about what I had done. And then, to top it off — when I really thought about it — I really didn’t spend all that much time actively thinking about kindness.…which begs to question — I wonder what could be if we really focused on something like that — where it could take us? Thank you, really for you sweetly kind words. And the real truth, like I alluded to above — was Joanna was wonderful source of really pulling everything together!

@J.D. Meier — When done right (and I certainly don’t get it right all the time), the boomerang effect is pretty awesome! In fact, this was just a sampling of the kindness I noticed this month. Personally, as I look through these comments, I’m overcome with the sheer amount of kindness that exudes from everyone’s words — and that’s even more awesome!

@Pat Steer — Hi Pat. Yes, there is a lot of beauty in the whole RAOKA concept that Sami has envisioned and created! A serial effort — what a great thought! Incorporating each preceeding month with the current month to just really shine more and more goodness into the world — how sweet is that! The Blog-4-Cause ebook was a wonderful experience, and one I believe was filled with kindness on so many levels and from so many people — so awesome to pull together the efforts of so many into one project! And for that — everyone in there shined kindness!! Awesome to have you on board with the RAOKA project!

@Joanna — Joanna…what can I say! YOU are an amazing, kind and caring person! And you are always shining RAOKA! It was so great to work together this past month with YOU!!! I’m a better person because of our time together — and that’s no doubt your kindness and compassion shining through into my life! Rock on, my friend!!

@Suzen — Suzen, thank YOU! You are so wonderful and supportive, and I appreciate all of that so much. So, you too — give yourself a big hug — you’ve earned it many times over. And someday…someday we’ll exchange these hugs…

@Jon — Paying for someone’s order is a very nice gesture, and a great way to make the person behind you feel cared for. And what’s even bigger, I think — is how that can then spread from person to person! Awesome!

@Positively Present — Thanks much Dani!

@Megan — Megan, your sweet and kind words are deeply meaningful to me. They are, because I really believe that, as I’ve come to know you, I also see that you speak very much from your heart — from a place that is filled with love. And that makes all of this from you extra-special. Thank you, from my heart to yours, wonderful friend. Yep, maybe it’s just the way we are both wired! Focus definitely helps me (now, if I can just remember to focus!). It’s so great having you here today!

@Lynn — Thanks so much, Lynn. The breast cancer project was very meaningful to me, and I know it probably even more so for Joanna. Thank you for your support of this!

@Hilary — Hi Hilary. Yes, definitely get in touch with Sami — she’s the mastermind behind this concept, and one that is filled with so much goodness! Thanks so much for your gracious words about the e-book, and for all your support of it! And — thanks for sharing some of your own kindness moments — I love the lavatory one!! Kindness and a bit of fun all wrapped up together! And know that YOU are part of this amazing group of readers here!!

Oh, and a little secret, Lori — some days I really am not all that kind…I know it. I have to live with me every day. Thank you, though, so much!! And isn’t it awesome how this project is taking off! Woohoo!

@Karl — RAOKA Rocks!! (Sami is onto a brilliant idea here!) Your parents sound awesome, what a great thing to do so you and your wife can get a bit of a break.

@Audra — Hi Audra. And when Josie (Yum Yucky) DM’d you, see — she didn’t even realize how good that made you feel. Makes me wonder…are there other moments we’re missing out on, thinking we haven’t done any good — when it’s be so positive for someone else. Or even more — that we’re not doing something, thinking it won’t matter, when it might mean the world to someone else. And you — well — Audra — YOU are nothing short of awesome and kind in so many wonderful ways — it’s been so good getting to know you over the last year!

@Angelia — Hi Angelia. Know that what I’ve witnessed you doing this month has been so touching. You are making a difference in other’s lives, one person at a time — and what a beautiful way to connect with others! You SHINE! (and…I love your avatar!)

@Evita — Hi Evita. You, my friend, are super kind and generous! Really, you have such a giving heart and soul, and I’ve witnessed that in amazig ways, and really — I think that comes down to compassion — when I think of you. It’s so much what I feel here today, reading your words. And — I hadn’t thought of it that way — yes, November can be a rather grey month — seeing the beauty in that is even more special! And speaking of beauty…Evita, you embody beauty…and it’s a beauty that starts within and radiates out!

@Sami — Sami!! YOU are so, so AWESOME!! Look what you’ve started here — a revolution!! And I’m so happy to be in the army!! Coolness on so many levels!! (Maybe we can use the exclamation point to describe you — it fits!) And thank YOU. Thank you for your amazingly sweet comment today. That’s your amazing heart shining through! So — it’s only fitting you dreamt up RAOKA, and then ran with it! I’ll keep running with you!! And — I think I’m ready (ready for what, she wonders??). Ready to come and see you! (well, except for the cash thing) I have to know most of the language now, you’re always teaching me Aussie interpretations!!

@Jodi — Jodi, thank YOU! And did you know, your smile here is contagious. It shines through not only in your picture, also in your words! It’s so good to have you here!

  34. Lance says:

@Nathalie — Hey Nathalie. Kick ass is a pretty great term, isn’t it! Which also is YOU! YOU are one kick ass NICE gal!! And it’s great having you here!!

@Nadia — Hi Nadia. When kindness is a way of life, it just has a way of coming back to you. Pretty sweet!! Hey — that’s just like you!! Woohoo!!

@Keith — Hi Keith. Thanks much, man! Really, this means a ton to me. And hey, just so you know — you shine kindness too! And I love how you’ve joined in on the RAOKA concept — way cool! Oh, and yep — I’ll “try” not to be too cocky (ha!!!). You know, it is easy for me to “beat myself up” sometimes…maybe I (and you) just need to be more aware of that. We’ll see how that goes!!

@Marelisa — Hi Mare. Hey, how cool is that — you get some of the kid toys!! (and what a wonderul sister you have!) Which must run in the family (family trait?) — because you project so much kindness too! Thanks so, so much Mare, for being here!

@Jeanne — Thansk so much, Jeanne. Living with a loving heart…awesome!!

@Jewel — Thanks so much, Jewel! You are super kind, and it’s great having you here!

@Christieo — You are very welcome (I still love the candy idea being like a “kick me” sign!)! And what a great group you are involved with — something I can tell is very near and dear to your heart. Kindness to some of the smallest (yet amazing) miracles out there — premature babies (and their parents)!

@Extreme Fitness Blog — RAOKA is way awesome!! Well, I have thrown a boomerang, and I too must not be doing it right — because it doesn’t always come back like it should. And maybe kindness is like that — if we fake kindness, or do it with ulterior motives — it won’t come back at us — JUST like that boomerang thrown incorrectly!

    Lance:

Thank you for sharing your RAOKA moments! You post did a great job reminding us to be more aware and appreciative of kindness — whether we give or receive it. Thank you also for tackling the big e-book project to raise awareness of breast cancer…It sounds like you had a full plate this month! Thank you also for your support over at my blog and the support that you have given to a lot of us out in the blogosphere. I’m still juggling my agenda tomorrow (I have some family commitments), but I hope to see you and your umbrella hat in Chicago tomorrow.

What a great idea… and such a beautiful thing! I’ll have to think about ‘beauty’ and see how I can incorporate this. I love your list, and all the ‘on purpose’ kindness you’ve shown, it’s sure to make a difference!

  41. Laurie says:

    Lance,
When kindness is a natural part of who you are, you don’t notice your RAOF. You live your life from a place of kindness which flows from you without thought or planning. So don’t be hard on yourself. You wash kindness over all you do and are. This teacher gives you an A+!

  42. Lance says:

@Liara — Sound like a pretty great formula!

@Tim — Awareness…yes, a real key isn’t it! And thank you — the e-book project was one that really meant a lot to me. Sorry we missed you on Saturday, what a beautiful day!

@Lisa — It did go great, especially the receiving of kindness that I experienced!

@Evelyn — Lora has been a real trooper this whole month (and more!) — making sure that everything gets done on the homefront. She makes all the difference in the world! So, thank you for noticing that.

@Tabitha Blue — Yes, next month just sounds great, with the theme of beauty! Thanks so much for stopping by today.

@Jannie — Ah…YOU are the wonderful one!! And you know what, Miss Jannie-ness…someday we are going to meet IN PERSON! And then I know I’ll be the lucky one!!

@Laurie — Hi Laurie. And thank YOU!! You are the one who is super kind…just look at your comment here today! I’m honored and humbled…

  43. Love the article. Kindness is so important and actually the giver, recipient and viewer of the act of kindness feel happier.

    Elliot,
Yes, that’s the great thing about kindness — is how many people it can positively affect!
