Preface: Random Acts of Kick Arse is a movement to bring more of {monthly theme} into our lives, and the lives of those around us.
October Theme: Kindness. Find ways to incorporate more kindness into the world.
The Results: Kindness. I suppose it could really be an endless list of ways to bring some “good” to someone else. Kindness is a pretty broad term. How to really focus on this? Hmmm… It seems easy, and then…well…daily life kicks in. What I found was that is was easy to “forget” this focal point for the month. Caught up in my own daily life, this idea of kindness took a backseat. Then I’d remember it. And I’d be more purposeful, more deliberate…until, well…I wasn’t. If I were in school I’d give myself a B, or maybe a C. There’s room for improvement, and the biggest improvement for me is in making each monthly theme more of a focal point. Lesson Learned: Without focus, it’s all too easy to do what I’ve always done.
I still hope that I’ve stepped out of October and into November having left a little more kindness in the world. What I do know is that throughout the month, I experienced great kindness from others, and I think that’s an important point to think about too. How often do we really appreciate the kindness shown to us? Do we sometimes miss it?
With that in mind, this month I highlight just a couple of the many moments where I witnessed beautiful kindness.
Moment #1
Through the month of October, I had the privilege of working with Joanna Sutter, from Fitness and Spice, on creating an e-book to raise money for breast cancer research (we’ve raised almost $1000!!). Joanna shined in so many amazing and kind ways all month. It began with her enthusiasm, and that kindness rolled into her doing the lion’s share of putting the e-book into a completed format. I know it was a lot of work, and she did it all without complaint (and making my life so much easier!) — and put up with my calls from early morning into the late evenings. Joanna — you are a kindness superstar!
Moment #2
Through her writing, I witnessed deep kindness from friend Angelia Sims, of Living, Loving, Laughing… Everything from participating and raising money to fight diabetes, to volunteering to help women at a homeless shelter. True examples from Angelia of kindness in action, and in ways that directly help people — out there on the front lines of kindness! And all of it done from the heart. Angelia — you are a kindness superstar!
Moment #3
A coworker, Rebecca, with whom I’ve worked on a project the last several months. Rebecca worked tirelessly to see this project come together — highlighted by culmination into a final product in October. This was Rebecca’s “baby”, and I was involved to support making it happen all through the process. At the completion, I suggested lunch to celebrate. She insisted upon paying (after I asked her out to lunch!). A small act (of many throughout the project). Spoken from a sincere and caring heart. And something not at all required. Rebecca — you are a kindness superstar!
Moment #4
My wife, Lora. October became a crazy month, and it consumed me. Through it all, Lora was there to pick up the pieces, make sure everything happened at home — and there to listen when I started to “whine”… That included when I was ready to throw in the towel on some volunteer activities, and she stepped in to get it all organized. And that made all the difference in the world. Lora — you are a kindness superstar!
What is Random Acts of Kick Arse (RAOKA)? With the idea that there are so many ways we can do small things to change the world for good, Sami, from Life, Laughs, and Lemmings took an idea she had and created this movement. The movement: A new theme to focus on each month, bringing a little more good to the world. The movement started in October 2009, with a core group of participants:

All your comments you leave everywhere, taking time to email me that I won that gorgeous book from Jason and Kim named ‘There is an adult in my soup’ and you even sent it in your crazy month.
All the posts you wrote this month that made a difference and contribute to global warming and then emailing people about your project with Joanna.
Hmm, should I go on and on about your kindness that in my eyes deserve more than a B?
BTW I think we should be kind and give that marking of our efforts a miss for the rest of our lives, what do you think?
Now one thing though, have you been kind to yourself????
The rest of this week I have committed to turn not so beautiful thoughts into beautiful thoughts to stick with this month’s theme of beauty and as I did not do last month’s RAOKA I cannot report on my experiences.

Lance, one ‘beauty’ to notice…the whole RAOKA concept.
As for a moment of kindness from October, I can find some I’ve made happen, and others that have happened to me. I’m glad to know that October was the month to focus on kindness, but I think I’d like to make RAOKA a serial effort. Like the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” each succeeding month I hope (for me) can include all of the focuses to date.
I also think your B4C ebook was more of an A+ focus on kindness — and thank you on behalf of those who will benefit from that idea, and on behalf of those who will benefit from the ripples of that idea.
For November’s challenge, to find beauty in the ordinary world, be beauty in the ordinary world — I’m in.

Kindness .. well I did release an old lady from the lavatory this week .. on my way to my uncle’s funeral! we are meant to laugh on occasions .. she was grateful! I have spent another day in the hospital with my mother — fortunately this was a day visit — last time we went for the same thing it was six weeks .. my health is shell shocked!

First, I love the quote. It is really so true!
Second, I find it utterly amazing, and so Lance-like that you focused on those around you. Instead of looking at this project in regards to YOU, you focused on those AROUND you. I find that just so special and loving.
And, Lance, you are the KING when it comes to kindness. You ooze kindness, so I can’t think of any way you can become even just a tiny speck kinder; if you did you would no longer be human and would be back with all your homies in the clouds. (lol)

The kind people in my life have been my parents. They came to help us with the baby and they’ve been nothing but awesome. My mom cooks and cleans. My dad fixes up all the broken things around our house. They are so awesome. I just feel so grateful.

Lance, I have to so agree with some of the other comments, if someone looked up the definition of kindness in the dictionary, I picture your face there.
I have seen you go above and beyond the call of “duty” and spill out kindness wherever you go or are. You really give a lot of yourself — and like Wilma also mentioned…don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Love or kindness for self has to come first before you attend to others. This way what you give or share with others, will be that much more powerful and meaningful.
So don’t forget to take some time for yourself, eat good, sleep good, exercise and all those other things that make you happy and your life special.
As for beauty — what an amazing theme! And this is good timing in a way, as I think it will be a little more challenging given November’s usual greyness — we will get that much more creative with what and where beauty can really be. Despite the weather outside, I truly believe today that beauty is all around us in more forms than we could have ever imagined!

Lance, I think it’s clear from the comments that you are kindness incarnate! Giving yourself anything other than an A+++ just wouldn’t be cricket (Aussie for “just wouldn’t be right”). Your kindness crosses oceans and countries in ways you perhaps don’t realize.
As for your focus on the kindness that came to you this month, that was a GREAT way to interpret this month’s theme. Love it! Interestingly, I found the same thing, I noticed a lot of kindness came my way too. I’m not sure if it was me being more aware of kindness because of RAOKA or if it was a case of getting back what I was giving out. Either way, it was a reminder of how lucky I am.
Lance, you are kickin’ arse! Seriously, you are the best at looking at situations or concepts from every angle. I agree, being kind and extending kindness is super important, but it is equally important as you pointed out, that we express thanks for someone else’s kindness to us. Great job here!! I hope November is less crazy and filled with all kinds of warm and cozy emotions!

You know, I have been blogging for almost one year. In that year I have met many people online and feel as though I have made some new friends. Among those people is an individual who, even before all of this RAOKA stuff, I would easily classify as a kind and giving individual. That person is you Lance. Hi Lance: You’re absolutely right that it’s important to acknowledge all of the people who have been kind to us. My sister is very kind; I always leave her house with chocolates, bananas, little toys (my nephews always get lots of stuff at the birthday parties they go to and I get to keep some of the loot), and so on. About two days ago I shared my umbrella with an elderly gentleman who didn’t have one, I guess that’s my most recent act of kindness. I think you get an “A” for kindness Lance.

OK first, thanks for stopping by my blog (kindness all on its own!). I love the idea of kindness and adding it to the world! It’s so wonderful watching others do this!! It’s Prematurity Awareness Month and my mom’s group (a group of moms who all have had preemies) have the wonderful privalege of throwing mommy’s who have babies in our local NICUs a baby shower. This is my dream, to support and be there for a mommy who is standing in the same shoes I once stood in. It’s a very scary place and I really am honored to be able to help. This is what we’ll be doing throughout the month of November (6 showers!) so we’ll be showering some kindness!

However, have you ever actually tried to throw a boomerang? That’s a great quote at the top of the post, but every boomerang I’ve ever thrown has wobbled and fallen out there on the grass, never having shown any inclination to return.

When kindness is a natural part of who you are, you don’t notice your RAOF. You live your life from a place of kindness which flows from you without thought or planning. So don’t be hard on yourself. You wash kindness over all you do and are. This teacher gives you an A+!
