Laughter

“The human race has but one really affective weapon, and that is laughter.” ~ Mark Twain

Preface:  Random Acts of Kick Arse is a movement to bring more of {monthly theme} into our lives, and the lives of those around us.

March Theme:  Laughter.  Find ways to incorporate/see more laughter in the world.

The Results:  How often to you laugh out loud?  Really laugh??

Did you know that laughing can:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Increase vascular blood flow
  • Give parts of your body a real workout!
  • Increase the response to disease-killing cells within your body
  • Reduce the frequency of colds and other respiratory ailments
  • Increase memory and learning
  • Improve alertness and creativity

And to top all of that off…laughter just simply FEELS GREAT!!!

Laugh with me right now!!!   Ha Ha Ha Ho Ho Ho !!!!  (did you???)

As I look back over the last month, I’m trying to recall how much I laughed.  And I don’t remember.

Except…

Have you ever laughed right at that moment when you have taken a drink (or bite) of something?  You know what I mean, don’t you!!  Where you start to laugh and just can’t stop…even though your mouth is already full of something…

During March, I did this not once…not twice…not three times…FOUR TIMES!!!  Without even trying (and it hasn’t happened in a while before this past month)!   Meals ruined!  Clothes that needed to be changed!  And a whole bunch of laughter from those around (okay — who am I kidding…a whole bunch of laughter AND a few “ewww’s” from my family).  In fact, my daughter used this as an excuse to get out of eating her broccoli!! (what kids will do to get out of eating their veggies!!!)

Serendipity?  Luck (am I Irish???)?  Dumb luck?  The stars were aligned?

Whatever you call it, what a month to have FOUR of those moments where the laughter just couldn’t be stopped!

And here’s the deal:  As much of a mess as these “incidents” may have made, it just felt really great!  That AND…it brought out a lot of laughs from EVERYONE!  And you know what?  As much as there are all sorts of health benefits for laughing…I’ll keep doing it for one reason alone…

IT FEELS GREAT!!!!

Big laughs.  Little laughs.  Giggles.  Laugh at a funny joke.  Laugh for no reason at all.  Belly laughs.  Laugh until it hurts.  Laugh until you cry.  Laugh silently.  Laugh out loud.  Laugh until you snort.  Laugh alone.  Laugh together.  Laugh standing up.  Laugh laying down.  Smile at the world!!!

“The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” ~ e. e. cummings

Join me…once more (please!!!)…and LAUGH!!!!  Just because you can!!!

Ha!
Ha Ha!!
Ha Ho Ho Ho Ha!!
Ha Ha Ha Ho Ho Ha Ha!!

What is Random Acts of Kick Arse (RAOKA)?  With the idea that there are so many ways we can do small things to change the world for good, Sami, from Life, Laughs, and Lemmings took an idea she had and created this movement.  The movement:  A new theme to focus on each month, bringing a little more good to the world.  The movement started in October 2009, and has a core group of participants:

Lori from Jane Be Nimble
Dani from Positively Present
Gayze  from Gazehound’s Animal Communication
Zeenat from Positive Provocations

Each month a topic will be chosen to focus on, and then at the start of the next month, the participants will write about their experiences from the previous month.

Interested in joining the movement?  Contact Lori for details.

    Hey Lance!

I’ve heard of the health benefits of laugher before, but it’s always nice to have a reminder =). I think a side discussion might be not just adding laughter into my life — but just taking times to take things less seriously once in a while ;)

  2. Ah yes, Lance, those moments of getting caught in a case of infectious laughter with a full mouth … I guess I’ll always be a child of the seventies, but whenever I think of those awkward gales of giggles, a line from an old George Carlin routine comes to mind … or partially to mind, as my memory’s going (did I mention that I’m a child of the seventies?) … about the classmate who once “passed an entire cheese sandwich through his nose”.…

Ah, here’s the line (where memory fails, there is Google): “One time, Michael Davey passed an entire cheese sandwich through his nose. Sister Annunciado thought is was a miracle, y’know? “

Okay, I will try to break your record this month :) LOL–no I will not, but it sounds good.…
I love laughter. I love belly laughter. I purposely say the most outlandish custom comment to those around me to get them to belly laugh. I look for the humor in everything–believe me it is there. I laugh at myself, sometimes even by myself, because there is lots to laugh at. I watch silly things, look at silly things, attend comedy shows, lots to promote laughter in my life. Laughter is the key to so much, and I think sometimes people are afraid to look or be silly so they hold it in…shoot just let it all out, laugh and laugh some more. It just came to me that I think there is something called laughter yoga…you all gather together and then the instructor somehow leads you to laugh. Odd that you need to be instructed in laughter when opportunity is all around.

    Lance,
I recently read about a test they did with people watching the same program. One group was watching it like that, the other group was given a pencil to clench between their teeth thus forcing them to semi smile. When asked about their feelings about the program, the ones with the pencil in their mouth felt happier, thought the program was nice etc. All positive feelings.
So now when I am running, I am grinning wildly :-) )))))))))))))))))))) And you know what? I get up the hill better and happier. Try it :-)

  7. Lance, I do love a good laugh but I don’t think I’ve done enough lately as I’ve had flu for two weeks. I tried to laugh it off but I ended up coughing so hard I nearly turned my lungs inside out.

So, to recap: Whilst I haven’t done much laughing, I’ve done a fair bit of smiling which is half way there (?) but nowhere near enough laughing (on medical grounds mostly). Once I’m better I’ll laugh myself silly. I promise. :)

  10. Hi Lance!

Great laughter post, matey! And, oh boy, the food-in-the-mouth thing. Been there! For me, though, it’s usually liquids spurting from my nose as opposed to food coming out my mouth. Too funny!

I enjoy all the color you used today, too, Lance. I also like the idea of laughing anywhere and everywhere — you’re a pro there, for sure.

Being involved in the RAOKA movement has been quite a treat, and having you along the ride is the bees’ knees! Keep laughing, Lance! :P

Lance, I recently went to a laughter yoga class. What a hooooooooot! For the last part of the evening we all laid on the floor and we had to laugh continuously for five minutes. Sounds impossible but it wasn’t. Just listening to everyone else laughing really gets you going. I had tears streaming down my face and had to remove my glasses. I placed them on my stomach and then proceeded to laugh so hard they flew off resulting in more laughter. It was GREAT!

    Hi Lance:

Ah, yes…I’ve had a couple laughter moments right after taking a drink of something fairly recently. I can’t remember what I was laughing at, but it was fun (and no ruined shirts)! And as much as I love to have this happen more, you just can’t try to laugh hard after taking a bite or drink of something — it has to happen naturally. Oh, and I love the E.E. Cummings quote which is so appropriate. Thanks for reminding us about laughter which comes in many shapes and sizes.

Lance, I’ve just recently discovered your blog. This post really makes me want to stick around! I don’t know if you find the same to be true with your kids, but I find my son’s laugh is very similar to mine. So when we both get going, it’s quite a laughter duet. Thanks for the great positive post!

  14. Hahahaha! Hohohoho! :D

I laugh all the time. Well, really I’m a giggler. I giggle and laugh a lot! Sometimes even when things aren’t obviously funny …which then gets kinda embarassing. But, who cares, it’s FUN!!!

Hi Lance. I laugh daily, many times. It’s a great stress reliever. The best bouts of laughter are when you are laughing because your laughing. The moment just explodes. I was visiting with my bother the other day and I said something that could have been taken another way. We both have the same sense of humour and the humour of this clicked in at exactly the same time. The two of us were laughing like crazy; I had tears running down my cheeks. OH… it felt good.

  16. Hey Lance, I came, I read, and yes my friend — I laughed. So, I read some more and guess what — yes, I laughed some more. What a fun story and how nice to share the gift of laughter. Appreciated.

@Sid — We live once, as far as I know…and our time here is short. So, taking it all less seriously sounds pretty great. If our time is truly limited, then I am sure I want mine to be less serious! (Great thoughts!!!)

@Gayze — Ha!!!! George Carlin really had some great stuff he shared! Me? I am kind of glad I didn’t pass a whole sandwich through my nose! You know!!

    @Miguel — I’m laughing too, Miguel!!!!

@Positively Present — Hey Dani! Laughing sure is a feel good moment!

@Joy — Hi Joy! I wish you the very best of luck! (haha!!!) This idea of an “image” we try to keep, and by laughing perhaps we think that it doesn’t fit the image we have created. Still, is that image worth it??? (NO!!!) I have certainly had my moments of looking goofy. And the older I get, the more I realize that what matters more is how I feel as opposed to what I perceive that others think. And…laughter yoga…I have done this!!! My wife and I participated in this just this past winter. While it seems odd to be instructed to laugh.…doing this was a ton of FUN!!! And a real workout!!! And.…just a great way to get to know some new people!!

@Mimi — Miranda! Hey, I’ll try that the next time I run! (well…I’ll just do the wild grinning…not the pencil between the teeth!!). So, that really shows how just a simple change in our facial expressions can completely change our outlook. That’s a great thing — because it means we all have the power, within us, to bring about a bit more joy and happiness into our life!!!

@Dave — Hey Dave! So…laughing can’t kill you, right??? It can severely mess you up, though, if you are sick. I guess that’s where a smile is pretty fitting. Keep on laughing, buddy (well…once you are feeling 100%…or maybe even 70%!!!)

@Lori — Hey Lori!!! I LOVE what you have chosen for the March topic!!! Laughter is so fun!!! Liquids through your nose…I’m getting a visual in my head right now! And I’m starting to laugh just thinking of it! See…there you go, making me laugh!!! RAOKA on!!!!!

@Kimberley — My wife and I tried laughter yoga recently, also! What a fun evening it was!!! And a real workout! And we did that same thing — laying on the floor and just laughing for several minutes. The energy of those around just feeds off of each other! I love it…tears from laughing for no reason at all!! How great is that!!!! Woohooo!!!

@Tim — Yep, I don’t remember either what I was laughing at…in those moments. And it does have to happen just naturally. When it does, though…a classic moment!!!! And I kind of think it’s okay if there are ruined meals (or shirts) when this happens — the moment is so worth it!! Keep on laughing, my friend!!!

@Bobby — Hi Bobby! And welcome here. Connecting with others through laughter is a pretty special moment. I find that laughing with any of my kids is a moment that is so worth savoring! Especially in those ones that really feel so completely spontaneous!!! And what a great way to connect with your son!! Enjoy all the moments with that little guy in your life!!

    @Marisa — Hey Marisa!!!! HaHaHoHoHaHoHa!!! Get your giggle on!!! Giggle-iscious!!! Giggly-wiggly!! Giggly-boo!!! Giggle-goo!!!

@Davina — Hi Davina!! Yes, it sure IS a stress reliever! And it works so fast, doesn’t it!! Way quicker than some pill out of a bottle! And laughter that begets laughter — awesome!!! It can just feed off of itself sometimes…and it’s such a great moment!! Woohoo!!!!

@Jonathan — Hey Jonathan!! I am smiling AND laughing right now!! And it all feels soooo good!! Three cheers for laughter!!

@Hilary — Hi Hilary!!! Ah yes…the contagiousness of laughter! It’s the BEST!! When it just starts to spread — what a GREAT moment!! So, Hilary.…I’m picturing YOU laughing right now…and spluttering in all directions…and it all makes me smile (and chuckle!!)!!! Because…obviously…I have spent a LOT of time there this past month!!!!!

@Jannie — Ha ha hee hee ho ho ha ha!! (snort) (giggle) (smile) Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! Hee hee hee!! (…more snorting!!) Ahhh.….that sure did feel GREAT!!!! And…YES!! The day we laugh together!!!! What a GREAT (and FUN) day that will be!!!! I can’t wait!!!!!

  21. Hilary says:

  22. LANCE-MAN.…
Have you ever tried to do the “laughter pill” where you say ha.…ha .….ha…as your raise the imaginary pill to your mouth and as you ingest it, your fall down on the floor laughing as hard as you can.…?

I think it is a good time…In fact, when I see you in Chicago, I am just going to fall on the ground laughing before you even say anything.

So as a Laughter Yoga Leader/trainer and someone who teaches people to be laughter coaches, I would have to say that I am in the category of thinking laughter is a good thing.

Here is what I tell people.…Laughter’s greatest gift (as I have found) is the act of release. When we laugh we put down the world we are carrying around on our shoulders and breathe (literally) for a moment. When we release the past and future moments, we get to be here now, today. What greater gift is there than that?

Besides, I think it is THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH. dude. Just keep laughing…it is cool if your kids think you are weird. I do too.

    Katie

  23. Oh Laughing Lance ;)
    I laughed..and I laughed..and I could actually picture your food out of your mouth..and hear your kids ewwwsss.… ;)
My little one is just beginning to say eewww.…imagine that..this eeww generation is gonna have us laughing and goofing even more ;) I love it when they say Ewww…makes me wanna do it even more…;)
Thank you for that wonderful mental picture of the foods and the ewws..make me laugh …

  24. Hi Lance,

Amen for laughing! Truly one of the best medicines in the world!

My philosophy is that laughter has to be a daily event and it has to happen more than once a day. Otherwise, a day without laughter is a dull day.

The best place to laugh is the supermarket because people are so serious when they shop. So my husband and I go into surfer talk mode and we get such weird looks. We will say aloha to people and all kinds of stuff. It is so much fun. :)

  25. LOVE this! The best feeling in the world for me, besides being truly loved to my core (and/or held by someone who feels such love for me) is LAUGHING! Uncontrollably as you described. Until it hurts. Until I’m gasping for air. Until I hear my friend, who’s laughing uncontrollably with me, squeak because she can’t make any other audible noise she’s laughing so hard… Which of course sets me off AGAIN! Crying, holding my belly, bent over, trying to compose myself…

    THE BEST FEELING!

    And it lingers…

Lance, your post is super awesome, just like you, and yeah, I’d say that “4” means something.
From a numerology standpoint, the number four means (and I love how laughter smashed this to smithereens in some cases!):
“Number 4 is the most practical of all numbers.
You most likely have some of the following strengths and talents:
You are practical, detail-oriented, organized, orderly, systematic, methodical, precise, reliable, punctual, dependable, honest, trustworthy, without artifice.

You are the rock and cornerstone of an enterprise, you don’t give up easily, you are perseverant and a hard worker.”

    Amen, brother! Laugh on!

I love that kind of uncontrollable laughter. I will never forget going to a Quaker meeting with my Father. It was a silent meeting. My brother and I had never been to one before (and I am not good with “silence”). So we were sitting next to each other (very bad mistake) and we looked at each other and tried to stifle the laughs. Well, you know what happens when you do that right? Our shoulders were shaking and tears were rolling down our faces. His face was so red…that alone sent me into more laughter. My stomach hurt for days after that. Then he snorted and I literally thought I was going to die (or pee my pants). OMG…that was the best! We still talk about that today. BTW…I am the queen of inappropriate laughter too…I laugh at funerals and pretty much any where that is too “somber”!

Lance, what can be more fun than laughter??

It feels so good and I love how you outlined too the health benefits. It is so true, laughter truly is great for the body physically. Even patients who are treating their cancer naturally, have engaged in regular bouts of laughter and seen amazing results. We will not split hairs on what is curing their cancer, but the point is laughter and a sense of truly feeling good translates to every cell in the body!

And I crack up thinking of you laughing so hard. That is what I love too about laughing, it is contagious — even when it is virtual. So I know you cannot see it or hear it right now, but I was chuckling as I was reading your post :D

Now on to spitting food…then I’ll know I’m really laughing well!

Hi Lance! Hubs and I make each other laugh ALL the time! It’s very good fertilizer for a 30 year old marriage, believe me. I also heard a really good belly laugh burns calories? Hey I’m all over that!
    hugs

@Jody — Hi Jody!! Yay!!! That’s a GREAT thing to hear!! And…now that you are done typing this…the laughter may resume!

@Evita — Hey Evita!!! So, does laughter help cure cancer? Perhaps we’ll never know for sure, or to what extent it may help. That it helps us to feel better, though…right there is a GREAT reason to laugh — irregardless of any other amazing benefits! And now…I’m cracking up thinking about YOU cracking up!!! See…the contagiousness of it all just keeps spreading!! Have an amazing weekend, awesome friend!!!

@Audra — Hi Audra. Such a little thing, right.…a few chuckles…and what a difference they can make. I know the last few months have been challenging with all the trips to see the doctor. A little laughter really goes a long way toward brightening the spirits. So…this is really so good to hear!! (Good luck at the dinner table!!!) And have a wonderful weekend!!

@Suzen — Hey Suzen!! See, you could be a marriage counselor!! And a fitness instructor!!! And just laugh and laugh!! How awesome would that be, anyway!!!!

  35. Laughter is a wonderful balm to the soul, as you pointed out. I’ve had a few good laughs lately, but being on the way to half-senile, I can’t remember the specifics. Often my husband and I act silly, race each other to the bathroom or shake our booties in the mirror, which provides a special form of uncontrollable laughter, as you can imagine!

I’ve been known in many circles to spit out my food or water, so I share that with you. I DO try to pick where and when I do food propulsion, though, as the mere thought of it bothers many folks.…

My sister and I have what we call “hairies,” which are episodes of out of control hysterics in a public place, to the extent that people stare and the management toys with the idea of calling in mental health professionals. But we love it. We get an impulse over some vague trigger that hits both our funny-bones, take one look at each other, and it’s all over!

People look at us as if we’re completely bonkers, and at the moment, we are. But I wouldn’t give up those hairies for anything. They feel good and don’t hurt a soul.

I just hope I never have one at a funeral. :)

Lance, thank you. Actually in the beginning of March I laughed aloud a lot, just to try the feeling throughout the day, in different places, both indoors and outside. I began with a little laugh that rumbled down and out of my depths and it really shifted my energetic perception. But a traumatic event at the end of March suddenly kicked in to knock out my smile. So my theme for April is simply to learn to S-M-I-L-E again. Reading your post was a wonderful reminder of what matters. Greetings from the mountains in Japan — Catrien Ross.

@Lynda — Okay, your comments makes me laugh today Lynda!! And those special moments we share with those we love can be so connecting. And WOW — you are good!!! I can’t control when or where I spit out food! (it just happens!!!!!) And I love what you and your sister do — how fun!! (even IF they have to call in mental health professionals!) Actually — I think you two are a great example of what laughter can do to NOT need mental health professionals — as look at what a good place this puts you in!

@Catrien — Hi Catrien. I really am sorry to hear how the month of March ended for you. There are definitely events that happen in our lives that can suck the laughter and smiles from our being for a bit. I hope you are doing better. And smiling is really a great place to start in working back to that more natural self that is within you. It is good to have you here today, and sharing this. It helps to remind me, too, of how quickly things can shift. Peace and love to you…

I just had a good laugh with my aunt. She bought into share market for a stock at 14 cents.
She sold the stock at 16 cents, since my uncle advised her to be content, and not be greedy. Right after she sold the share, the stock increased in volume and price. The following day, this particular stock became the top volume in the local stock exchange.
We teased my aunt about her luck, and had a good time laughing with her.
