Small Steps

by John Spence on · 8 comments

I love the idea of small steps. Consistent small steps in the right direction are a sure way to create a happy, joyful and successful life and career. And the great thing is; if you make a small mis-step – and step off the path, it is only a small step in the right direction to get back in step.

I will use myself as an example. I am trying to lose some weight – well, a lot of weight – actually I am trying to lose 100 pounds. For just over a year I have been making small, continuous positive steps in that direction – and I am now stepping at about 77 pounds lighter. But if I do have a bad day and simply cannot resist the french fries – I have only missed a single step – I can get back in step at the very next meal.

Another example: I just read a statistic that stated that 42% of college graduates do not read a single “educational / self help” book after they graduate from college – not a single one!!!  If you were to take the small step of reading just one self-improvement book every two months (6 books a year) – you would be in the top 1% in America for self-learning. If you were to read one book a month (12 a year) you would be in the top 1% in the world for self-learning. So here is my suggestion for a small step you should take… dedicate one hour a day to reading a book that will help you improve your life or your career and you will look up in five years and be in a much, much better position. I promise!

What a wonderful affirmation! Until I read your words, I had celebrated small steps for the momentum, but hadn’t considered that a small “mis-step” is easy to correct for, when noticed. Thank you for that insight :)

First of all congratulations on the wonderful progress you’ve made on your weight loss plan! I also am a BIG fan of small steps – in fact when I set a big goal for myself what I do is first clearly define the goal then start working my way backward breaking the process down into small steps to the point of where I am now. Working backward like that helps me to not miss important steps along the way, as well as to gain valuable insight on a realistic time frame. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love the idea – as well as practice – the making of small consistent steps to achieve one’s goals. It’s how I finished my first eBook, and it’s also how I am going about finishing my first published piece, also. Congrats on the accomplishments on your end, John! Thanks for sharing the awesome piece! :)

Really wonderful way to think about a mis- step. They are just small, not the end of the world, and we just take a tiny step forward to get back 0n track. Congratulations on your weight loss, another inspiring part of your journey.

I really like your point on preferring the small steps. A couple of years ago, I used to make big resolutions, but I always felt disappointed, when I couldn’t realize them. And after a while, I started with baby-steps. And with a series of baby-steps, I also could reach my big goals.

I’m soooo with you John. I’m also trying to lose some weight, though a smaller amount. Instead of trying to do it ALL in one big effort, I’m changing my eating habits, PERIOD. Everything in life is about increments…unless, of course, you win the lottery!
