“I am like a falling star who has finally found her place next to another in a lovely constellation, where we will sparkle in the heavens forever.” ~ Amy Tan

Preface

This morning, a cool and brisk start to the day.  In fact, with the shifting sunlight hours, and darkness staying longer, it seemed like the middle of the night.  Now was the time, though, if I was going to get outside and get a morning jog in.  A quick three miles, down mostly deserted streets.

The Dawn of Something More

The early morning darkness was made even darker by a heavy fog engulfing the area.  So dark, that I couldn’t make out the edge of the road from the grass beside it.  No traffic. An occasional light as I happened by a house here and there.

I approached the top of a small hill.  The road surrounded by woods on both sides…complete darkness.

Then, light, faint light.

I looked up. Greeting me, a chorus of stars as I came out of the fog and into a clearing.  Stars, shining bright in the darkened skies.  It all seemed so surreal, so larger than life..coming from complete darkness, into these amazing stars shining their light into my life!

In the quiet stillness of this morning, out amongst the stars up in the sky, I was drawn into the magificence of our world!  More than that, though, I was drawn into the light from these stars, and the deeper meaning that has for me.

The Star In YOU

Like all those stars up in the sky, lighting up the night, each one of us has that star within.

YOU.  Yes, you.  You have that star within you.  It’s there.  Maybe it hasn’t been fully discovered.  Maybe some days a cloud cover comes over, drowning out your light.  Maybe the star within you doesn’t seem as bright as someone else’s.

It’s there.  Within.

It matters not how bright your star is compared to someone else.  To one, you could be the light that matters.  It matters not that your star within is not fully discovered — it’s not for any of us, and will continue to become more present as we continue on the journey through our lives.  And it matters not that you don’t shine that same brightness every day.  That’s what other stars are there for, to brighten our way when our light alone is not enough.

It’s there.  Listen to your heart, and that light from your star within will shine it’s true colors.  Colors that shine the real you!

Believe!  Believe in you, in the light that you have to share!

YOU are amazing!

    Lance,
I love jogging — anytime — anywhere — it always is an occasion for discovery and wonder. I went running before lunch today (after work) and though I didn’t feel like it the woods and the colorful leaves, the warm sun etc made it well worth. And I saw probably the last butterflies happily floating around. Didn’t even know they were still there at this time.
So, yay to running and it triggering things such as blog posts!
As for the star in us, I totally agree. It is up to us to make is shine. And it is our duty to find it and light it.
Thanks for this. I enjoyed reading that.

As always, you can make us all shine. Thank you for the uplifting words. As we approach this holiday season I think it is important for each of us to give ourselves a gift. Pulling out the stars that we have within is the best possible gift we can give ourselves.

    We are EACH amazing!

Great post lance I had a similar experience the other day…I was in a remote village in Costa Rica called “Tortuguero” where the leather back turtles return each year to lay their eggs…I had never seen such a beautiful sky…no clouds in the sky and no city lights for miles…it looked like god sprinkled a bunch of salt in the sky…a very transcendental experience.…it’s amazing how many of us don’t take the time to acknowledge the awesomeness of our universe…all we gotta do is look up…thanks for the reminder :) …Namaste…

  9. Lance,
I think you could put this post in a book titled, “The joy of running.” I sometimes think I run for the exercise or I run so I can maintain my weight. What I really run for is because I love being out in nature. I run because I love challenging myself. I run because it costs nearly nothing. I run to see the sun, the stars, the sun …I run because I can’t imagine not running.

I run because my light shines brighter when I do. Thanks for sharing your light today and thanks for your help. I appreciate you!

  10. As one who likes to use a lot of galaxy metaphors in my writing about Yoga, I particularly enjoyed this. I get a similar sensation whenever I walk outside and see the moon or sun or stars. This reminded me of this poem I wrote about a similar experience:

    In my living room

    While lying on my back

    On the couch,

I can gaze through the window

Past the roof of the house,

    Past the bright green leaves

    Of the lofty trees

    Gently swaying in the breeze,

    Past the endlessly changing forms

    Of the brilliant white clouds

    Slowly drifting by,

I can gaze through the window

    Into the unfathomable infinity

Of the wondrous deep blue sky.

    This is my favorite place

  11. Yes. Lance. So nice. I used to be an avid runner (understatement) and you describe it so well. Both the air and the deserted streets but also the power it has to allow us to open up to what is before us like the stars opened before you.
How vital is it to remember these moments are everywhere, every moment, just knocking at the door asking us to open up to our own amazingawesomeness.

Lance, you were out in my very FAVORITE part of the day! I just adore sitting quietly under the stars, letting them bathe me in their glow… All goes still and quiet inside… They shine more brightly, I awaken a bit more, sit up a bit straighter, feel lighter and brighter myself, the light within growing brighter, stronger, until I’m wide awake, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, as my parents used to say. The quiet of night just before dawn seems to bring me to life in the best way possible, energizing me slowly, cleanly, effortlessly—just by being in their presence. And by the time I return indoors, I’m charged for the day, and without any caffeine, either! :)

  16. Evita says:

Wow Lance what a moving post!

We are all beautiful stars and each of us shining so brightly, even on those down days where clouds may cover our sparkle, I truly believe that that rich light within us doesn’t die, or go away. We sometimes forget it is there, and like you said some of us don’t even know we have it — but it is there.

How truly beautiful this was, and what an experience you had.

Sadly there aren’t many stars in the sky above where we live, and we don’t even live in some clustered down town. I am thus blissful when I usually see one star in the sky — I count my blessings on it!

The most beautiful star sky I experience is when we go “up north” — oh my goodness, I will never forget when I first saw that sky as a little girl. I felt like the whole sky was sparkling, even got a chance to see a few shooting stars too :)

  23. Angelia Sims says:

    Lance,
Great post! I love running in the mornings for just those reasons, the stillness and the deepness of the dark. Not many stars here though, very few are apparent in a city of 6 1/2 million.

My star shined so brightly this weekend, it burned out yesterday. I am slowing nurturing the shine back. I am not worried, it will be bright once more. I am grateful for the dim times. It actually reminds me of being in the city where the stars can’t penetrate through, some are unseen but still there.

Outside the city, they shine for all their glory, distinguished and bold. It only takes a trip away to find them again, to behold the absolute stunning sight of the heavens.

You, Lance, are a star so bright — it’s viewable inside the city canopy. Very exceptional!

@Julie — Julie, I know you love those early morning hourse. So peaceful, isn’t it. And how you’ve described it all…so, so good. Julie, I am deeply honored to know you…you help so much in bringing out the stars in others. And that’s you shining so brightly into the world around you…just like those stars you see outside your back door.

@Peggy — I think part of it all is just taking the time to appreciate all that is around us. The planetarium sounds awesome. And Peggy…I’m so glad this brightened your day. And know that your words here have done that for me, too. I’m so glad to have gotten to know you, you are a truly wonderful person!

@Evita — Evita, I really couldn’t help but think of you when I was writing this post. Something about the connectedness of nature — and while I don’t remember exactly how it all went for you — I was taken back to the trip you took recently (spring? summer?) out into a secluded place in nature. something about what you wrote, and how good that was came back to me — as I wrote this. So, thank YOU! Beyond all that, though — Evita, your soul is one that shines in amazing ways. Really, I’m completely drawn in to the love and light you shine onto others! You are most certainly a gift in my life…

@Caroline — Thank you Caroline! I know those moment, and I’m guessing most experience that at some point — where we feel like we’re not all that “shiny”. You are though, and what I’ve witnessed from you has been so sweet and wonderful — you are such an amazing person. Always remember that…

@Karl — Yes, it does come from within, very true. Although hearing it from others is so, so good too. Karl, you are doing amazing things. I understand that fear thought — it’s one I have too. Know, though, that YOU are awesome already — and that comes through in every interaction I’ve had with you! Keep shining, my friend!

@Marelisa — Ha!! Well…I really do enjoy the early morning hours! And recently I’ve done some evening running too. The setting sun is gorgeous! Mare, you are so awesome and supportive, thank YOU!!

@Lisa — And we might not always realize that, right? That we are a light to someone out there. I love that, Lisa — that it’s just being who we are. Being our “natural” self, what a concept. And yet, who better to be! Lisa, your words always take me deeper into “me”. Thank you for all you give. Know that you shine brightly in my life…

@Laurie — Laurie, we certainly do! And we’re more alive because we’re connecting with what really matters to us. And that’s where we really “hit our stride”, and then when that shines out from us, wow! And you do that so amazingly well, Laurie! You have a way of making others feel loved and like real “stars”! And that’s you being a bright and awesome star yourself!!

  48. Lance says:

@Jason — Thanks much, Jason! And hey, I know you shine…I’ve seen it in person!!

@Angelia — Part of the draw for those early mornings is the sky, but it’s also the stillness. And while you may not always see the bright stars up above, there is still something about that darkness. Angelia, I just want you to know that I’ve witnessed your inner star shine. It’s there always. And so maybe it was dim, but I know that yourlight shines in amazing ways…even when it doesn’t feel like it is. Keep on believing in “you”…always…

@Laura Hegfield — And you too, Laura, keep shining your amazing light…just like those stars up in the sky!

@Diane AZ — While I haven’t seen the movie, that line you shared really resonates with me. Everything is extraordinary, isn’t it! Our world is so amazing. You are amazing!

@Jannie — Hey Jannie, you shine amazing in so many awesome and quirky ways! It’s what I love about you…you ARE fun in life! And it’s so, so refreshing…

@Wilma — Wow, that sounds amazing! And that’s it…the shining star in all of us is there…always. Sometimes it’s just a matter of giving it permission to come out and play. Thanks so much, Wilma, for being here and sharing your light into my world!

@Amanda — Hi Amanda. I think we can relate to nature sometimes, because it is so connecting with us. The moon is so awesome, too, isn’t it! It’s easy to gaze up in wonder at it… And that’s where you’re taking me, Amanda, to the thought of just how expansive our world is! Thank you, my friend…for shining your light, today, into my world!

  49. Lance says:

@spinDiva — Hi Terie. Ah, yes — it’s easy sometime to have our blinders on…and not see the light that we shine…and the light that other shine out into the world. Terie, you shine!!

@Keith — Hi Keith. You know, you have a way of making others feel uplifted. I sense that every time I read something you’ve written. So, you ARE doing exactly what you see as one of the greatest things. Isn’t that pretty awesome! It is!! And you are!!

@Diane — I know what you mean about that faith in God…in those early morning runs. I think perhaps it’s because we can maybe sense His presence in the stillness and vastness of our world. Very awesome, Diane…just like you!

@Joanna — Well…thank YOU! And, I know firsthand just how amazing and awesome and incredible you are! That has shined through so much in the last couple of weeks, and really, I’m deeply moved by it all…by you…

@Megan — I loved that picture too! YOU are most definitely a star — and part of that is the way in which you make others shine! You do that so amazingly well — seeing the good in others! And that’s a light you shine out into our world…always! So thank you, my friend, for always lifting up those around you in beautiful ways…

  50. Lance says:

@Suzen — Hi Suzen. Thank YOU!!! You always have something so wonderful to say…I’m blessed to know you! Remembering to see that light in ourselves…great point! I forget that too…and it IS there! Keep shining, Suzen!

@Evelyn — Evelyn, it’s great to have you back! And I’m sure your time away was time for you to really focus on the beauty you shine outward! Which I think is so awesome that you did this!! Welcome back!

@Jewel — Yes, we all shine! YOU shine!

@Audra — what a great way to look at that, Audra! That at this moment, this is always the first day of the rest of my life. Wow!! Really, that’s a very deep thought, and one that’s really sinking in right now…as I think about what do I really want the rest of my life to look like… This is so, so good! Like you, my friend…

@Jen — Thanks so much, Jen! You always brighten my days, and it’s great having you here! I know what you mean about unintended circumstances and how they can derail us sometimes. And that’s when it’s good to connect back with what really matters. Keep shining, my friend!

@Sara — Sara, thank you, so much. Your words are deeply moving for me today. They (your words) are a chorus of stars for me this morning. And that’s you, Sara, shining your love and light my way today. You are a beautiful soul…

@Extreme Fitness Blog — Morning runs are great, aren’t they! When I think chorus of stars, it’s almost as though they were singing out to me in the silence…no sound, yet beauiful music… Thanks so much for being here.

@Thomas — Awesome photograph of yours!! I love all the stars, it fit the image I wanted so well! thank you for stopping by here!

@Bern — I love that which you’ve shared. Seeing beyond, definitely. And that’s not always easy…in a world in which it’s easy to get caught up with what’s right in front of us. This has me really thinking today…thanks so much!
