  1. Davina says:

    Wow, Lance.
There is so much value packed into this passage. “Artists don’t care about credit”. Hmm. :) That’s an interesting statement. To some extent, I do care about credit — I have to be honest. But, I also know that caring too much leaves an artist open and vulnerable to seeking approval and defending against criticism. It’s a vicious cycle, because that gets in the way of creativity. I guess there are different ways to see this. An artist also wants to be able to share their work with others and knowing it has been ‘seen’ and appreciated is part of that.

  2. Nice Sunday thought to bring inspiration, Lance. I guess there will always be critics, and we shouldn’t let their criticism bring us down. We are all artists, and none can be replaced!

    Lance,
Not one particular thing stood out to me..I found my self emphatically nodding in agreement with *everything*…so I clicked to Seth’s link–very interesting!! Thank you for introducing me to Seth’s work. Thank you for sharing as you do…Now I have lots to mull over…make sure I’m embracing as best as I can, and working to release that which acts as a barrier to embracing..all while I am honoring my pledge to myself to incorporate Summertime fun into my life:)
    Enjoy your Sunday:)

I found yours maybe 18 months ago and never miss a post.

  6. Mindfulmimi says:

    Lance,
As you know I am a big fan of Seth and went to see him live in Belgium recently. Although all he says is not really rocket science it seems that people don’t get it yet. You have to do your thing and do it well. Your art, the thing that you have in you. Whether it’s serving people, singing, baking a cake, writing a blog or selling toothbrushes. I try to live by it. I am a linchpin. I am not waiting for others to find me. I do my thing. Because I have to, because I like it, because it’s me.
    What a great Sunday thought.

  8. I heart Seth. He rocks.…and I love so much of his maverick perspective. (And I love how short his posts are too ha ha!)
Funny though today…as I read this quote…I was listening to a speaker, Dave Oshana talk about spiritual enlightenment. And they both ring so true.
What I see as Seth’s gift is buoying and boosting the life force each one of us has within us. For me, he is essentially saying, “Get up off to couch and inhabit your body.” And in this way, he powerfully encourages us each to BE here.
And the speaker that was playing while I started to read this is saying, “Get up out of your body and inhabit the idea of spirit.” And in the same though different way the message is the same,
    BE HERE NOW.“
Thank you…with a full day ahead, I will remember the words of both and allowing being to take center stage.
    Hugs to you
    Katie

  11. Lance: Thank you so much for the Sunday inspiration. That was a really message from Seth. Thanks for passing it along and the jolt of motivation. I really appreciated the line about the more you put into the world, the more it gives back … so powerful. We all need to hear those inspiring messages from time to time.

  12. I like Evita like the line about our choices determining our future. Yet unless I stay conscious and present with my choices I am tempted to mess up my future. I was struggling to give in to a bad habit yesterday and instead made a conscious effort to stay in the present moment and in touch with why I wanted to “disconnect.” Easy line to understand…not so easy to do choice by choice on certain days.

  13. I’m a huge fan of Seth Godin. I also have to admit that a lot of my ideas come from him. He thinks in such a unique way that helps a person see the truth of their situation.

We are all afraid of one thing or another, but we can’t let this stop us from doing great work. We have to be honest and and do the stuff that is important to us. That means being a linchpin at work, at home, and with our friends.

  14. Colleen says:

I like Seth, and he makes some great points in Linchpin, however, the premise of his book I disagree with slightly. His premise is that industry the way it has been done is broke and needs replacing, whereas I agree things are broke, but they need to be fixed, not replaced.

I embrace a lack of structure to find a new path. I am doing that right now with how we live in following co-creative science principles with nature. We have been dominated by a status quo that is no longer serving us, we have dominated nature in agriculture in a way that the food we grow is no longer nourishing us. I have left that status quo and am finding a new path. It is lonely sometimes, often scary but most of all exciting and very very promising for entering the stage of a New Earth, Heaven on Earth.
I love Seth, he is authentic and shaking us up.
As always thank you for your sharing, let’s all leave old structures behind that no longer serve us and Sunday is a great day to start a new path with, at least most of us do not have to go to ‘work’, most of us are FREE today :) .

Always moving is a big one. When I am not moving, I lose out on opportunities. There hasn’t been a time where I slowed down and came out okay. It might be smart for me to always have a piece of paper around that says “keep moving” on it. Great things come when you keep moving. It causes people to look at you as though they know you will help them out or create something cool or do a certain job in time.

  20. Lance says:

@Davina — Hi Davina. I very much appreciate your honesty. That idea can really be a challenging one…honestly…to NOT care about credit. I’ll be honest too…I care about credit. Maybe not as much as I used to…but still…it’s not like it has gone completely away. Thank you so much for sharing this…so meaningful.

@Joyce — Hi Joyce. At our core…there is an artist within all of us. That critic is one who can definitetly hold us back…and yet…it doesn’t have to be that way. If we can get beyond any outside criticism (which will always be there), there is a world of beauty that awaits us…

@Joy — Hi Joy. Embracing…our being. Joy, you do this so beautifully! And summertime fun.…I really believe that runs in your veins!! Happy Sunday to you, dear friend…

@Lynn — Seth is a wealth of information…and someone who really feels like he speaks from a place of truth. As you let all of this settle in.…I hope it brings some clarity for you. Thanks so much for sharing as you do, Lynn. It is so appreciated.

@Jannie — Hey Jannie. As in.…life isn’t handed to us on a silver platter. Sure, it might sometimes seem like it is for some people. And still…it’s just not with any depth to it. Jannie…I consider myself one lucky guy…and that’s because YOU are here! You are sweet and amazing…and rock the world!! Big hugs to you, sweet friend…

@Mimi — Hi Miranda. I know! How awesome being able to see Seth in person! And Miranda.…watching you as you have evolved since I first got to know you.…this has just been a real gift for me! You have shined your artistic colors so amazingly! You ARE doing your thing…and it’s wonderful to see!

@Jules — Hi Jules. YES!!! Be a linchpin!!

  21. Lance says:

@Katie — Hey Katie. I know you are a Seth fan! Okay — and now you are relating this to spiritual enlightenment. Katie.…this whole idea of enlightenment is something that has really been with me the last couple of months especially. Now, I will have to check out Dave Oshana (with whom I am not familiar). Oh.…and I LOVE that — “Get up off to couch and inhabit your body.” Couple that with the idea of “spirit”…and it’s a beautifully touching thing of “soul meets daily life”.… Big hugs to you, sweet friend…

@Jody — Hi Jody. The great thing about Seth’s writing is that it is clear and concise. I think you’ll enjoy what he shares.

@Evita — That’s a great line. What we do NOW does shape the direction of our future. And along those same lines — it’s also important to remember that what happened in the past is just that — past. What we have is NOW to create the life we desire. And NOW starts right NOW for all of us… Thanks Evita!!

@Sybil — Hi Sybil. We all have the choice of what we put out into the world…even if we think we don’t…we really do — at least to some degree. And that IS a powerful statement! It’s great having you here!!

@Tess — Being conscious of our choices…Tess, that’s such a great point along with this. We can all make choices (and do). Are we making them, fully conscious of what they are and what they mean to us, though? LIVING this…not always easy (I know!). You have really touched upon something so true along with the choices we make…

@Karl — Hi Karl. Seth is very unique…and in that uniqueness, I connect, too. When we are honest with ourselves…really honest…and touch upon all that has meaning and importance to us…what a great place to be…and what a linchpin we become!

@Colleen — Hi Colleen. Ahh.…good point. And maybe some things can use replacement, while others just need to be tweaked. It should perhaps never be an all or nothing type of thing. Colleen, I very much am grateful for you stepping up and saying this — sharing what you feel in your heart. That’s the beauty of all of this — this idea that when we connect more in line with our heart — wonderful things happen. That’s what I feel here as I read what you have written — and the conviction with which you speak. Thank you for this…and for making me think more deeply in the process…

@Adrenalynn — Hey Lynn!! AWESOME having YOU here! Talk about surprising: that time I jumped out from behind the door and scared one of my kiddos… (that’s a bit of a tangent, though…) Seth’s words ARE filled with wisdom.…

@Wilma — Hi Wilma. Heaven on Earth…what a wonderful and beautiful thought!! I love that you are embracing a new path…one that resonate with you AND is nourishing to both the body and soul. You are right — there are lonely moments on this path, too. Still, so worth it. So worth connecting to what has deep meaning for us. Much love to you…

@Happiness and Wisdom — Thanks for visiting! Seth shares much wisdom in this manifesto he has created. And — here’s to following our own path…not living by an pre-imposed “status quo”.…

@Armen — Hi Armen. Always moving. Good stuff, for sure! And this doesn’t have to mean physically moving…perhaps it’s even more of a mental moving. Keep our brains (and our heart, too) active. And not everything we do will work out — and that’s the mark, anyway, of greatness…trying, failing, trying…succeeding… Keep at it, my friend…

@Suzen — Hi Suzen. Seth is a treasure (…and so are YOU!). Enjoy your moments at the summer cottage…and if you see that bear…get a picture!!! (and be safe!). Big HUGs to YOU!!

@J.D. Meier — Hi J.D. Sticky. Very cool word…especially in the way Seth has used it! And that IS creativity with purpose…shining through.

@Barbara — Hi Barbara. Great to see you…always!! Reacting. Great point. We always (even when we think we don’t) have the option to think (and choose) before responding to something. And our choices…they can make all the difference…

Hi Lance — I haven’t read the Linchpin yet but I love the idea. Being the artist, instead of focusing on the trivial work gives a greater sense of achievement. So many of the old business models encourage you to pay someone else to be the artist while you manage the system but the world has changed so much — we don’t need to do that anymore. Artists and credit. Hmm. It’s an interesting thought to ponder if we are honest, especially as I am about to launch our first novel, after all, I am not going to write“written by anonymous” so I have to admit that I do care about receiving credit for my work.

I think…maybe what it is, is that I don’t create for the fame or credit, I create because the need to add my value and art into the world is as much a part of me as my need to breathe. I can’t hold it in. It must be expressed one way or another and I can’t be held back by what others think or believe. That just doesn’t fit into the picture.

@Wendi — Hi Wendi. For the record, I’m with you on that idea of wanting some credit for the works I do. And so — I really think you have nailed this — with the idea that we, as the artist we are (and we all are!), do what we do for something greater than recognition. That there’s a deeper reason for it all…for something that we can give to the world. Wonderful, wonderful thoughts! And so good having you here!

Me likes it! We all have the opportunity to be artists. To create. We get to put ourselves “in the zone” by maintaining a curiosity toward people and life. Look around. We’re getting to be in a body on planet earth.

A planet where the basis of life seems to be love. At least we have the opportunity to create love. That’s about as exciting as it gets.

Cheers to the artist in us!

    Hugs,
    Lauren

When I was a child, my mother said to me, ‘If you become a soldier, you’ll be a general. If you become a monk you’ll end up as the pope.’ Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.”

Have an amazing 4th of July weekend my friend.
