  1. Hey, Lance I know this to be very true. Any time I’ve ever been afraid to do something yet plunged in anyway, I look back to see the fear was really never to fear — a good thing to keep in mind as I continue try new things.

Happy 4th! Hope you and yours will have a fun one.

Rudyard Kipling was a smart man, as are you, Lance. For me, being fearful sometimes feels like a hurdle to jump, but it always turns out OK. :)

  6. They say that 99% of our fears really don’t come true, no wonder they’re liars! Yet we listen to them again and again, forgetting how courage saw us through. Hmm… tricky tricky. Maybe we could learn to practice courage more often so we’ll be able to remember it deeper and forget it less often.

  7. Jay says:

Fear is the opposite of love and faith. It’s the root of all evil in the world. If we are to evolve into better people, we must master our fears and the anger they cause. The key to mastering our fears lies in knowing which ones are valid, and which ones are “damned liars”.

Thank you for this quote, because it helps us see that not all of our fears are valid. Once we can tell the difference, we can heal ourselves and our world.

OOOOH! You know I’m all over this one! LOVE IT! Gangaji says that at the core of any negative feeling (sadnes, anger, jealousy, anxiety, whatever) is fear. AND when we feel our negative feelings WITHOUT telling stories about them (the lies) — just feel the pure feeling — it disappears. We find there’s only energy left. I love that. And love you! Happy INDEPENDENCE day!

  13. this is great and so True. yet…still…I have some very real fears. fear of heights, snakes and roller coasters to list a few. But…but then again.….no fear of speaking in public, being in a play or making a fool of myself trying something new and failing miserably. We all have something.…and try as I might to be brave and work through my fear…nothing has enticed me to pet the skin of a snake yet!yikes!!!!! I have gotten on roller coasters, and I pity the poor souls who have had to listen to my screaming next to me while I “worked through my fear and stepped into my courage” :) yeah…and now they need hearing aids!

    Happy 4th of July!

  21. Happy 4th of July to all. Rudyard Kipling is one of my favorite authors from high school English class. Fear is the absence of love. Courage is being afraid and doing it, whatever it is for you, anyway. Fear has been one of my greatest teachers. I should have said, facing and overcoming fear has been one of my greatest teachers. Loving myself means letting go of all of those fears that used to run my life. See all of the thoughts that your wonderful Sunday Thought For The Day started in my head. Thanks for the inspiration. I always look forward to your Sunday posts.

Thank u for that wonderful quote. Always thought of letting go of fear, not worrying about them, finding their roots etc. But I like to think of them as liars now, more fun :-) . The photo u share as well, lightens the worry we have of fears. Nice change in perspective. God bless

  28. Keith says:

    Hello Lance!

There’s a lot of truth wrapped up in that statement. I know from my own experiences, that most of the time, fear was not being truthful.

If we can bust through fear, we’ll usually find that we were afraid for no reason at all. :-)

    Thanks Lance!

  29. Lance says:

    All,
Your words are all very meaningful to me.

Fear is an interesting thing — how we can let it hold us back, when we listen to that voice speaking to us. And yet, when we move beyond these fears…when we choose not to listen to these “lies”…there is so much good waiting for us. And that’s even when things don’t go as we might like — there is still good there.

Some days…this is easy for me…and other days, not so much. So, this quote, and all that each of you have shared — these words land on my soul.

    Much peace.
    Lance

Belated Happy 4th of July, Lance.
I took the day offline, so I missed this one. As soon as I read the quote I popped over to Twitter to tweet it. Lol at Dave’s comment. But… hmm, I wonder how much trouble we get into by not being ourselves, too. Pondering that now. See what you’ve done? :)

  31. Hilary says:

Hi Lance .. fear is just a hoop — it needs to be jumped through .. and the sooner it is done — the easier it will be and life can move on and not be held back. We need to face the fears and realise it’s just a hurdle .. it will pass, or be knocked over, or jumped over .. but it’s easier to jump it and move on. Lingering with fear is stressful to say the least ..

Thanks .. enjoy the week .. Hilary

  32. Mindful Mimi says:

    Lance,
How true. I have always wondered where our fears come from. Why do we have them? How do we come up with them? Is it genetic? Is it personality? Is it education? I’m sure it’s a bit of all of that. But there are no classes in school that teach you life lessons, are there? There are no classes that coach you (for free) to grow. Why is that? That would definitely take away a lot of fears in people.
Or maybe they should make a law that obliges people to be themselves, or else… :-)
I have only recently started being myself. And I still struggle sometimes. The fears creep back in. The insecurity, what other people might think (God forbid!)… And after some coaching by my husband and Christine Kane, things became a bit easier. All kids should get this! :-) Let’s start a petition!
