Lance my friend,

I read blogs and I say “Who?”… But I read your blog and I say “Who else?” 🙂

These Sunday quotes are so much your signature by now. I love this quote, and I love being half a day ahead of the US because I get to comment while everyone else is still asleep!

I was worried the cyclist was driving on the wrong side of the road until I saw it was South Africa. Whew.

And I might just move half a day ahead so I can be first commenter too. 🙂

Amazing music. Amazing bird, I could feel his joy after his flight.

Amazing grace.

What a fabulous video: so much fun in the beginning (I thought they were dancing & playing at first) and then with liftoff, I felt my heart lighten up a little, as if it was flying too!

Perfect start to this wonderful Sunday — thanks, Lance!

@Daphne – Daphne, thank you! It’s great having you here, as I’m just waking up! And I really appreciate all you’re saying – this means a lot! And I deeply enjoy putting these “Sunday Thoughts” together – and then watching them really blossom in the comments. And that’s you, and everyone else who adds their thoughts to this!

@Jannie – You know what Jannie? I thought that same thing the first time I watched it too! Does that say we think alike? (scary, huh!). Hey, if you just stay up really, really late…you’ll be all set! That music with this is so moving isn’t it! And especially watching the bird try to take off – so fitting. And then to do it, to fly! Just like we can, if we keep trying the dreams in our hearts…

@Miz – Thanks much Carla! It’s always so good having you here. And…I’m having my coffee too!!

@Megan – Hi Megan. Yes, this is so fabulous, when I first saw it I just knew I had to include it today. We can all fly! Fly…in whatever direction we choose, we just have to keep trying, not give up – and follow our hearts. Thanks for being here Megan…

@Jeanne – Thank you!

@Stephen – Great to have you here this morning Stephen! Yes, this video really shows what I think the Shaw quote embodies – doing something we haven’t done before, and keeping at it until we get it. And watching these birds struggle, and then get it – very cool!

@The Exception – Thanks so much for being here today!

@Yum Yucky – Josie, thank you. And watching these birds, I’m reminded that all IS possible. That we can all “fly” in whatever direction our dreams take us. We may struggle and not get it right the first time, but if we keep at it, and really believe in what we’re doing – we will soar! And that’s pretty awesome!

The video, the music, the quote….a perfect combination to finish/begin my week.
The title of the video ‘Learn to fly’ reminded me of a song by Tom Petty with the words ‘I’m learning to fly but I ain’t got wings’.
That’s what I am doing at the moment, throwing caution to the wind and opening up my heart.
I know the answer lies within my heart and when I see the doors open, I will dare to fly.
Lance you bring so much joy and integrity to the blog community.
Bless you dear friend.
Peggy 🙂

Awesome Sunday morning inspiration, Lance! The Blue Crane video shows how joyful it can be to reach a goal. The Shaw quote encourages experimenting and trying things in new ways. Sometimes such creativity helps us reach our goal and but it can also lead to unexpected and wonderful discoveries!

Lance that was great! I was so happy when the bird starting flying and the music just fit the situation perfectly. I wish I would have been there, been a spectator to something we never really get to see. Birds don’t just automatically fly; they have to learn. They have to keep trying until their goal is well within their grasp.

See. You CAN fly. 🙂

Sundays are a hiatus for me – sometimes the beginning of the week, sometimes the end. But whenever I come here, Lance, I’m always happy I did. You’ve built an international community of people with big hearts. What a legacy you’re leaving for your children as well as creating weekly bright spots for us.

This video was beautiful; at one point I could almost feel myself trying to raise up from my seat in empathy. It reminded me of a quote from my teens, emblazoned across a picture of soaring gulls I had on my student room wall for years:

They can because they think they can.

Fabulous – as usual 🙂

Just goes to show ya – not even birds know how to fly without practice. Nothing is born with al the knowing – the instinct yes, the knowing not so much. I’ll betcha that second bird wasn’t far behind in getting up there – and I’ll betcha he wasn’t on the sidelines watching and pouting and whining “Oh I wish I could do that!”

Hi Lance!
Close to the end of the video, after so many awkward and skittish movements, the crane touches his (or her, I’m not great with avian gender determination…) feet back down to the earth. Then she takes that extended pause, head held high, with those gorgeous feathers floating in the breeze. I loved the pause.

Then I think, life really is all about that pause, don’t you think?

That was just beautiful, Lance. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this and it really touched my soul. What a way to start another week! Thank you for finding this for us, and–love the quote, too.

Totally love that quote Lance and the vid is a perfect example of it. All too often people will tell you why you can’t/shouldn’t/couldn’t do something. Imagine if the likes of Alexander Bell (and many others) had listened to the naysayers. The world would have missed out big time.

Lance August 2, 2009 at 10:15 pm

@Lynn – I love that Lynn…all IS possible!! Thanks much for stopping in today.

@Miruspeg – Hi Peggy. Well…what a great Petty song! And, I’m listening to it right now – how fitting for this today! The answers within our heart, those are the ones, that even though they may sometimes seem scary, are the ones worth “flying” for. So, Peggy, I wish you only the best in all the future holds in front of you! You are listening to your heart, and you WILL fly! It’s so great to have you here today and sharing this – thank you, my friend, for helping us all see our own wings start to emerge…straight out of our hearts…

@Diane C. – Thank you Diane! Watching the video, it’s as if I feel myself really pulling for them to fly. And then when the one does, it just feels so good. So, when we try new things, and really let those things grow their wings – and we fly – what a feeling!

@Chania Girl – Thanks so much Chania Girl. These “Sunday Thoughts” really have deep meaning for me. So, that they resonate with other too, what a wonderful feeling for me! And know that it’s great to have you here whenever you can – your thoughts are always meaningful to me.

@John – The music that this is set to, yes – it just feels so inspirational! Birds are born to fly, but they still have to learn how. And seeing this, it really was special to watch the process. And yes, it does remind us that we can “fly” at whatever rings true in our heart. Thanks much John!

@Tess – Hi Tess. The music on this is really quite inspirational. Although, there are no words spoken, only music played – if that helps at all. Thanks for being here today, and a very Happy Sunday to you too!

@Janice – Janice, it’s always wonderful to have you and your thoughts here – whenever that is! And this is something I believe very much – that I may be a conduit to getting this started, by sharing something here – but it’s in the comments that these posts gain their real momentum, and really come to life. And that’s in all the people who visit here and share so generously (like you!). So Janice, thank you opening up your big heart here, and adding so much to what is being said. So to the video – yes, I felt that too, as they were struggling to get up in the air, wanting to see them succeed. And what a great quote you’ve shared – they don’t know the “can’t”, so they do it (fly) because they don’t know they can’t. In our world, the human world, I wonder how much hasn’t happened because people have heard “can’t” too much….

Lance August 2, 2009 at 10:15 pm

@Lisis – Lisis, I’m reminded of a quote from Star Wars: “Do or do not…there is no try.” ~ Yoda. You WILL fly, my friend. And I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, or that you’ll get it all the first time. What I’m saying is that you will fly because you are doing this. You are taking yourself and your family up into this new adventure ahead of you. And you’ll be flying, I know it. There may be some turbulence, but just think of the view…and the fact that you’re soaring (and really living)!!

@Suzen – Thanks so much Suzen! Practice…it’s how we get better…it’s how we’ll soar! And you bring up a wonderful point – this idea that as humans, we can sometimes complain about something we can’t do – when we really all it likely takes is our time and effort at that task…instead of complaining about it.

@Talha – It’s great to have you here, Talha! Enjoy your time out in the wilderness, and yes – always remember that you CAN “fly”…

@Nadia – Hi Nadia. Why not have the life we deeply desire – right? Great thought, and great (as always) having you here!

@Liara – Happy Birthday Liara!! Wow, what a special day to really think about this! And you do fly, I know it! And you shine your light all along the flights you’re on!

@Chris – Hi Chris. Yes, the video really does pick up as it goes on, and it’s so moving…watching these two trying to fly, and then the one getting it! And that I find very inspiring!! Thanks so much for being here today…

Lance August 2, 2009 at 10:16 pm

@Lori – Hi Lori! So, I just went back to watch that part again (and watched the whole thing!) – that pause – it is great! It’s like I can feel her confidence soaring, the success that came from trying and trying until it happened! And that’s pretty special! Now, this idea of the pause – wow, Lori, what a great thought. When we pause, when we really stop and let it all soak in – the good, the bad, the indifferent, all of it – there’s so much in that pause. This really has me thinking, how am I doing at recognizing these pauses in my own life. Hmmm…. I think I’ll put some focus on that this week. And I have to agree with you, Lori – this is a soul-touching video…so moving to watch…

@Carla – We have NOW, right! So, why not live our dreams…now? Thanks much Carla, the more I hear this the more it deeply sets in…

@Hilary – Hi Hilary. How awesome for you to have been in this area! And this idea of practicing until we get it, until we all “fly” the dreams we have…how life changing this thought can be!

@Positively Present – Why not ask “why not”? What do we have to lose? It’s a great question for all of us to think more about! Thanks much for this perspective Dani!

@Marelisa – Hi Mare. Yes, I find this video to be so moving and showing of what the spirit within us each can achieve. And I love this quote too. In a little change of how I normally do this, I had the video, and then looked for a quote that would fit well with this. And I really liked the combination of these two together. “Why not” is such a great question for all of us to use more in our vocabulary… Thanks Mare, for being here today, and for all the support you’ve given!

@J.D. – To “go for it”…that’s great! That’s so positive…and if we do “go for it”…we will soon be flying high!

Lance August 2, 2009 at 10:16 pm

@Sami – And you bring up an excellent point Sami…the idea that the people who’ve done things that we remember as “big things” – these are all people who asked the question “why not?”. They saw possibility instead of impossibility. And whether we’re doing something really big, or really small – if it’s something we believe in deeply – and something we see the possibility in – then we can soar. And it doesn’t matter if it’s big or small…in fact, sometimes the smallest things are the biggest of all…

@Stacey Shipman – You’re so right Stacey – it can be easy to give up. It’s the easy way out. And will anyone know? Maybe, maybe not. We’ll know, though. Deep down, we’ll remember. And maybe regret that we didn’t keep trying. Especially in those things that ring so true to our core. So, here’s to trying, when everyone else has went home, when everyone else is relaxing, when everyone else is complaining…and we WILL fly to new heights. And the feelings that evokes in us…wow! Happy Sunday to you to, my friend…

@Diantha – It’s great to have you here, Diantha! I’m sorry to hear of your loss. And what an image you’re giving me now, an angel getting her wings…and flying freely in everlasting life! What an inspiring thought, thanks so much for being here and sharing that!

@Jodi – Hi Jodi. You know, they really do look like they’re having fun. On the one hand, I watch them as they try, and am really pulling for them to take off. And on the other hand, see the joy they are getting from trying is so much fun too. And I think that also shows us that it doesn’t have to be all hard work and pain for us to “fly” into our dreams. They can be fun travels, and that’s part of what makes it so worth doing – the fun we derive from it all. Love this angle Jodi – thanks much!

@Davina – Thanks so much Davina. It’s great to have such a caring and thoughtful group of people gathered here. I leave these posts feeling uplifting in all that is possible in our world – and that YOU, and everyone else who offers so much here. If you’re still having trouble with the video, you could try to click the “Learn to Fly” link right below the video, which will take you directly to the site.

@Mama Zen – Thanks much Kelli!

@Audra – That’s a great saying – I love it. It really speaks to having a “can do” attitude, and asking that question of “why not?”. Thanks for all your give here Audra, I really appreciate you!

Jennifer August 3, 2009 at 12:39 pm

How wonderful!!! I felt myself identifying so much with that bird – sometimes it’s easy to feel that we’re just flailing around, but with persistence, it’s all worth it. I just kept smiling as I saw him finally take off for his first real flight! It was so beautiful. What really struck me was the other bird who was the coach. It was so fascinating to see the different techniques it used to help that bird to fly. It believed in the bird’s ability to fly, it pushed, it encouraged, it showed, it even seemed to help make it fun. All the things we need. That’s just a powerful reinforcement that we needs mentors – and the right kind.

I’m working on not letting self limiting thoughts dictate my choices. There is a ton of potential in me, especially if I stop the negative thought dance within my own head. Just today there was a moment of weakness. I caught it before it had a chance to fester and open a deeper wound.

I know that I’m meant to do great things. I just have to trust myself and enjoy the learning process.

@Bunny – Hi Bunny. Thank you!! It’s great to have you here, and sharing your thoughts on all of this. Really, this adds to much to the whole quote.

@LisaNewton – You WILL fly Lisa!! And especially if you’re asking yourself “why not?”. I’m so glad your hear, because it’s thought shared like this that make putting this together, all worth it. Keep flying, my friend…

@Barbara – And a great post you shared today Barbara – “why not?” is a great question to ask ourselves when we’re thinking of trying new things with our blog. And we’ll fly…maybe not right away…but if we keep at it, we will soar! I love this quote too!

@Srinivas – Your welcome!

@Jennifer – You know Jennifer, I hadn’t thought of it that way…as the other bird being a mentor, a cheerleader, a coach. And I love it! When we have others there to help us and cheer us on, it’s so much easier to accomplish those big dreams we have. Wow! I’m really looking at this whole video in a new light now, and it’s so good! Thanks so much for sharing your view on this…it’s so good to hear!

@Sagan – Yes…full of possibilities, why not, right! We can all fly!!

@Karl – Hey, I’m pretty sure I’ve had some of those negative thoughts dancing in my head too. Let’s get rid of them, both of us! Great job catching that today – sometimes it’s just us being conscious and aware of our thoughts. You ARE meant for great things, great things in which you connect deeply to, Karl! Keep on asking “why not?”… and keep on really living your life!

@Bri – Hi Bri! That’s right, we don’t have to limit ourselves…we can fly. And even if we don’t fly the first time we try, that’s okay – especially if we keep on trying…and then, all of a sudden, there we’ll go – soaring through the sky of our life!

@Keith – I felt myself really pulling for these cranes to get airborne too! And when they did, it felt so great! And yes, this really is a metaphor for life…and how if we keep trying at our dreams, we will soar!

JenX August 3, 2009 at 11:16 pm

this is really special. i watched it yesterday on your site, and could not get it out of my head – especialy the long walk up the hill!!! i’ve felt like that before. it’s like that bird had the wonder of a child – starting over again. so much to learn from this and reflect on lance. thank you!

This was a fabulous quote and the video was just majestic. I loved that fact that that the lovely bird kept trying and trying and trying and never gave up. And finally he did it…he flew. Life is like that sometimes…the only difference between the bird and us is that we forget to try too often and give up half way through.
Indeed, we need to dream larger and take that big step towards it.
Love your sunday dose.

@JenX – Yes, my thoughts exactly, how special this video is. Seeing these cranes and their beginning attempts at flight – wow! Try, and not make it, and then walk back up to do it again. It’s the definition of success I think. Success is that when we don’t succeed, we climb back up and try again. And then to see the one take off, what a feeling.

@Zeenat – Yes, the whole trying over and over again – until he WAS flying! Here’s to dreaming our dreams, and then really living them. And soaring because of all of this! Thanks so much for being here…

I love this quote. Yes we must have a vision and to know that we create that which will be.

Dear Lance,

Thank you for posting this gorgeous, inspiring video and quote.
It is exactly what my spirit called for tonight ~

Thank you also for your uplifting nature and your attention to others
and with all of that combined being part of my flight in this big, beautiful blog world.

With a grateful heart,

You never know exactly where the intermediary destinations will be but the final one is ingrained in your deepest subconscious.

@Kaushik – Hi Kaushik, thanks so much for stopping by, and so good to hear you enjoyed the video!

@Tabitha – Isn’t this video so awesome. These cranes can teach us so much in just watching them learn to fly. When we stumble or fall, if we get back up and try again – then we have not failed…just like that bird – and the hope he provided. So good to hear this resonated with you, Tabitha! Thanks for being here…

@Lisa’s Chaos – It is way cool, isn’t it – the first flight for this magnificent creature!

@Mark – Turning our dreams into reality…why not! It’s such a positive and enabling quote!

@Tom – I am soaring right now…and it’s great! You too, my friend…fly high!

@Bella – You can fly Bella, in anything your heart desires! Keep on living in such positive and uplifting ways, my friend! It’s so great having you here, you’re, and your words tonight touch me deeply…thank you!

@Liara – Yes, and that’s okay…these intermediary destinations…if they are all working us toward that final destination on this leg of our journey…then it’s so worth it! Thanks much Liara.

@Mike Foster – Thanks much!

@Caity – Caity, thank you for stopping over here and watching this. It really is beautfiul, watching these creatures work through something that is natural to them, yet still must be learned too. Much like us, and what we have deep within us, I believe….

Fantastic video. It really goes to show that animals experience times of thrill and excitement just like we do. That bird had to feel a sense of exhilaration and accomplishment after finally being able to fly.

Yes, so much excitement from getting ready to take off…and then really doing it! Wow, how amazing – to fly for the first time!

Amy Jewell/ Cirklagirl August 12, 2009 at 6:27 am

This is great. It was early morning when I watched this, so I did not have the sound on at first. It is cool to watch it without sound. The videographer did a great job with the visuals! What kind of birds are those? Do they fly normally?

I can only just say thank God that my comments are buried amongst the hundreds and no one will read them…. I had missed the last minute of the video, which was everything. and the credits… and the comments…. I need a do-over! lol…

What a great little movie. You gotta stay til the end. I guess that I should have read this on Sunday instead of Wednesday, as I am a little less rested and a little more rushed!

When the movie first started, I was thinking of those days when you are out on your bike, or walking, in the peaceful morning hours before anyone else is up. So quiet. I love that time of day. I also loved the comment that @Miz said about “reading the lance”. Funny.
