  1. Self reliance and optimism, yes, these are two key ingredient for a happy life.

  2. Hi, Lance!

Happy Sunday! I’m reading a Byron Katie book now, recommended by Tess at The Bold Life, and just last night I was thinking, “Wow, it’s okay to drop my ‘old’ story and keep living this new one. I’m not tainted by who I used to be.” I used to sort of look back at who I was and shudder (even though I know that spiritually I should embrace all parts of myself ). Your quote today reinforces my belief that letting go of those old chapters is okay. I wrote them way back when and they were necessary in the moment, but don’t affect what gets written today or even tomorrow… And they certainly don’t “taint” me.

As always, I’m inspired by your content. So thank you!

Wow! What an amazing thought and a great reminder!

    Thanks Lance!

  4. Miz says:

It is silly in a way but, before ever meeting my daughter, I chose for her the song UNWRITTEN as her song (N.Bedingfield) as it says pretty much the same thing.

your life is an open book. it’s unwritten. now git to scrawling.

good luck today and have fun!

  5. Miz — that song is one of my favorites for the lyrics alone.

So true…we all have it in us to write our own story. Sharpen up your pencils! Let’s get ready to write!

  6. Adrenalynn says:

Thank you, I REALLY needed this today. When I saw your post pop up in my reader I clicked through hoping it would help bring me some perspective — and it did.

  7. Evelyn Lim says:

I love this quote very much. It is true that each of us write the story of our life. We can either choose to fill our pages with drama and negativity or with love and peace.

  9. Chania Girl says:

The great thing about the story of our lives is that we can change it midstream. I feel blessed lately to have been able to do just this, to see themes I haven’t liked and outcomes I don’t desire, and decide that the next chapters aren’t going to be written that way.

(I like the ‘Unwritten’ song, too.:) In Greece, I played it for my class of all teenage girls, and they loved it! I had tears in my eyes watching them sing along.)

  11. This reminds me of what my sister yells to her kids as they walk out the door everyday to school. She says, “Make it a great day!” instead of “Have a good day!” It’s up to us. I love this reminder!

  12. Laurie says:

Realizing what this quote says has changed me life. I always thought that excitement was for other people. I didn’t know how to be one of those “other people” so I thought I just missed the boat somehow. Then I realized everyone is one of those “other people” if they go for it in life. So that was when I gave myself permission to have adventures and dreams. It has made all the difference in the quality of my life. It also has made a difference in my spiritual life in that I live more from a place of gratitude and thanksgiving. Enjoying creation and life is a form of worship that God loves to see.

  13. Yum Yucky says:

Hi Lance. This is a great perspective. It’s true, but not always that simple… maybe it’s not supposed to be :-) There is a lot of room to be playful with this idea. We could write a new character for ourselves and play with it just to see how it feels. Or rewrite the characters of people in our lives to look at them from another perspective. 31. Lance says:

@Miguel — Good points Miguel. While we can’t always “go it alone”, having self reliance and being optimistic –> these really show a belief in self. And this is so important as we go forth writing the pages of our life.

@Megan — Thanks much for sharing this Megan. Our past is just that — past. And what we have now, while our past makes up who we are — it doesn’t dictate who we will be. So, I think this is really great! You are a magnificent story…keep on writing that!

@Dr. Rus — Thanks much Dr. Rus! It’s really pretty powerful when you think about what it says…

@Miz — That’s a great song (I just listened to it, as I’ve never heard it before). They lyrics are so close to what this quote says. And it’s such a great message in the song — so it’s not silly at all! What a gift to give your daughter! And if our book is unwritten, then what are we going to write in it? We have the choice of what those words are… Thanks for sharing this song, Miz. And thanks for the well wishes today — it was all great (and I was ready for a nap by noon!).

@Stacey Shipman — The lyrics to Unwritten as so good, aren’t they (as I said to Miz, this is a new song to me, and words used are so uplifting!) That’s right, be ready to write (and write with deep meaning).

@Adrenalynn — Glad this quote was good for you, Lynn. It is for me too…

@Evelyn — Choice. I love that Evelyn. Because it’s so true, we all have the choice of what goes into our “book of life”. What will we choose?

  32. Lance says:

@Jannie — The “Unwritten” lyrics are awesome (I just checked them out), and they fit to this quote so well. Keep on writing your story, it’s a wonderful one my friend…

@Chania Girl — We can always start a new chapter –> so true Chania Girl. And the past is behind us, and we can move forward writing however we choose. I know you’re choosing to write your story in some very wonderful ways! And wow! Sharing the “Unwritten” song with teenage girls, and seeing their reaction had to be a very moving moment — thanks so much for sharing this.

    @Jeanne — Thanks much Jeanne!

@Liz — Hi Liz! It’s great to see you! The word “make” really does imply that we have a choice — and so that really is a great message of “believing in yourself” that your sister is passing on…wonderful!

@Laurie — Hi Laurie. Thanks for sharing this part of your journey. Yes, we all can choose to write whatever it is that has meaning for us in the “book of our life”, or we can choose to write that which doesn’t have meaning, or is influenced more by others than our own internal feelings. So, Laurie, I think this is awesome to where you’ve taken yourself. And I know you’re doing this — writing (and living) that story that is yours, that has meaning, and has excitement for you!

@Yum Yucky — Hey Josie. It’s not like we all “get” this from day one of our lives. It’s a process to get there, and the thing is — we can start that new chapter whenever we want to. So maybe you did have a paper bad on your head in your twenties — you’re probably the one I ran into because I couldn’t see with my own bag over my head (the swelling has “finally” went down…whew…that took a looong time…). I like your story too Josie — although it really doesn’t matter what I think, what matters is how you feel about that story — and it sounds like it’s a masterpiece!

@Mama Zen — Thanks much Kelli!

  33. Lance says:

@Vikum — Thanks Vikum! Yes, the choice of what we put into our story — is ours. What’s it going to be?

@Stephen — I think I missed that, I’ll have to check it out — thanks much!

@SpinDiva — Hi Terie. Now is all we have for sure — how do we want to use that time? Would it be different if we knew we had only a certaim amount of time to live? It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day of life — and before we know it another year has passed, another five years gone, and pretty soon we wonder where the last 20 years went. This quote really reminds me that what I have is “now”, and what do I want written about that. Thanks so much for stopping by today.

@Positively Present — I missed what you wrote earlier this week — I’ll have to check it out, thanks for pointing me that Dani.

@Jodi — Thanks much Jodi, glad you liked it!

@Davina — Hi Davina. You’re sure right that this isn’t always easy — it’s sure not for me on some days! I love the creative angles you’re looking at this through — we really could go in many directions with this! And that’s a very cool concept! Yes, I’ve had a wonderful Sunday, hope yours has been too.

@LYnn — Each day as a new chapter –> like saying that each day we can start anew. And that thought just feels really good! Thanks Lynn!

@Patricia — Spiritual Journey of a Lightworker — Patricia, thanks so much for sharing this, for all who have been victimized in some way. This can certainly not be easy, yet this is so empowering, I find. We ‘can’ choose…

  34. Lance says:

@Chris — Chris, thank you for being here today, and for being so honest.

@Jenny — That’s right, Jenny — we author our lives. I know, that can be easy to forget sometimes…and when we do, what’s getting written in our book may not be what we truly want written.

@Lisa’s Chaos — Definitely worth putting into use — thanks Lisa!

@The Exception — The choice to start new. Yes, that’s it! We always have that choice, even if the choice may not seem all that grand or profound — it’s still a choice we have everyday in how we live out our lives. Well worth thinking about…

@Darren — Yes, what do we accept in our lives? Do we accept that we have control over it? Or do we just go through life…going through the motions? Lots of questions, and ones only we individually can answer. But so worth thinking about, and what they mean in our lives. Thanks Darren!

@Suzen — It’s like starting with a fresh slate every day. And I know, this may be a bit of an exaggeration…although maybe it’s not, really. Even if our past has things that are still held over us, we still can choose to start ‘today’ anew. And that’s an empowering thought! Thanks much Suzen, I love what you’re saying here…

@Sami — Hey Sami. Oh, good stuff! Literal and metaphorical pages of life. And really — if we think about this — that’s a great way to approach this idea of our “book of life”. It’s not just a physical book, and it’s not just a metaphorical book — but when we use both of these, how powerful this can be, as we also record our ‘life’ in a real book, a journal, or something similar — getting those thoughts out of our head and onto paper. Sami, thank you for this. I find what you’re saying to be such a wonderful concept!

@Audra — I love what Liz wrote too, about ‘making it a good day’! Such a positive message. Yes, we were created by our Creator. He has made us unique and wonderful, each of us. And when we think our life this way, and how we are truly unique, then so is our story. And how will we write this unique story or our lives? Audra, this is such a wonderful thing to think about. I love it all! And thank you, also — for being on my page, and adding your light along my journey…

There’s a lot to be said for writing a page at a time. Interestingly, today I was reflecting on how we can improve life a scene at a time … like a bunch of Hallmark moments. 41. Lance says:

@Bunny — Hi Bunny. This does fit well with Dani’s article, and I’m glad this has added to your perspective. Thanks for stopping by!

@Chris Edgar — Responsibility. I love that word use here in the context you are, Chris! Yes, we are responsible for our lives, for what gets written in our “life book”. Even though we can’t control everything that happens, we still always have the poser of choice. Thanks for this!

@Cricket — Tammy, thanks so much for being here, and I’m glad you enjoyed this.

@Jill — Re-writes in our story of life are perfectly okay. Or, to know that we can always start with a blank page, there’s much reassurance in this, and in what this means. So Jill, keep on rewriting as you’re so moved to do — and keep making your wonderful story that much more meaningful to you.

@Linda — Hi Linda. Great thoughts! The three “R’s” — responsibility, resilience, and rejoicing! I really love this that you’ve shared, it speaks to all the chapters we’ll have in our lives, not just the “good” moments.

@J.D. — Moments where our life flashes before us — these can really be moments where we focus on that which matters. And as bad as this can be, there is much good in this also — in seeing what deeply matters. Looking at the “scenes” in our life, another great way to tell our story…the story we want to tell…

I like the idea of starting with a fresh page every single day and writing my story. That is such a positive and uplifting thought. Time to start figuring out why it’s especially important to sit with that thought today. Thanks, Lance.

    Lance,
Very nice quote and I like the simple picture too — I just love to write and I end the day with my gratitude journal , right before I go to sleep I think of what my key word will be for my next day — or story and then awaken ready to go.

I am so pleased I am able to get on your blog today, I was getting an error message for so long, I think it was my twitter button?

Now today my email will not download! This is getting to be a story of frustration!
    Good thoughts

I always enjoy your Sunday Thoughts for the Day. Interesting quote. Even though I’m retired, I love waking up very early in the morning ready to start each new day. I like the idea of having choices, which I think the quote is referring to. But I’m also open to the possibility that I am not the doer.

I have never heard this quote before, but I believe it’s true. Somedays, it takes great courage to pick up the pen. I wonder if we’re allowed to tear pages out that we don’t like? I love the adventure of reinventing my life!

@Natalia — In the daily routines of our life, it IS easy to forget that we do have a choice of what goes on that piece of paper. I know! And the more we can be aware of this, the more we’ll start to actively write the story we want. And thank you re: the triathlon!! This was the first of the year. I have another in two weeks. Fun stuff!

@Tess — Tess, this is super-awesome! A 1/2 marathon, that’s so cool! You are writing a wonderful story, and this is only one part of it. And your story is so amazing (I’ve read your book — so I know you have literally written that story!). Keep on writing it Tess, you are doing such great things! (and thank you, so much — you ARE so kind…but I knew that already!!)

@Karl — And that’s a great point. Our book isn’t just one book, or one page, or one character. It’s about all aspects of our life, and the people we have along on this ride through life with us. Keep at it Karl, you’re doing great stuff!

@Nadia — Hi Nadia. Yes, we ARE the writers of our life. And then if that’s the case, what do we truly want written in our “book of life”? And yes — by writing our story, that means getting out there and living our purpose and our dreams. Thanks so much Nadia!

@Stacey/Create A Balance — We sure can! We write all the stories of our life, and by neglecting one of them, it means that story is one that’s maybe not what we really want. And I think that’s a great reason for balance!

@Evita — We write our life story, whether we realize it or not. So by consciuosly making the choice in what goes into “our story”, we develop the story in the amazing ways our life is designed to be led! And that is definitely an internal choice that makes all the difference. And when we get there, that’s so awesome, isn’t it!

@Srinivas — Visualization can really be a powerful technique to start seeing the life we want, so that we can also start writing that story. Great thought!

@Barbara — Hi Barbara. Oh, what an excellent point. How easy it can be for us to ‘force’ our thoughts and ideas on others — and when it’s their story to write, not ours. Barbara, thanks so much for bringing this up — it’s so easy to forget. Keep creating you beautiful story…

  59. Lance says:

@Erin — Would you believe me if I told you a little bird delivered these every week?? Okay, I didn’t think so! Really, I just look for something that speaks to me, in the moment — that’s such an important part of this for me. I love the thought you’re sharing about us being the star of our own movie, and what would we want that movie to be. And to think of each day as a fresh start, as a chance to start anew…what a liberating thought! Thank you for being here, Erin, and for really adding to this conversation with your beautiful thoughts…

@Sagan — Write on, my friend! Write that wonderful story of yours…

@Jenny Mannion — Jenny, I know that you are writing a beautiful story, and one in which I so much enjoy following along with. You exude love and joy, and I can only think that every new page you “write” has these two as pillars. Jenny, thank you for being so “you”…

@Janice — I do believe very much that this is something you do, Janice. And I wish you well on your journey through today, as you weigh the true importance of this message in your life. Indeed, we each have to take this on ourselves, and it means different things to different people. Thanks for sharing this today.

@Patricia — What a wonderful thing you’re doing writing in a gratitude journal, and then focusing on a new key word each day! To your problems you were having — I did some updates this morning to fix some minor problems on the back end, so maybe they were affecting you also? Anyway, it’s great to have you here today!

@Diane C. — Early morning hours are my favorite time of the day, I find much peace in these hours. Yes, I see this as relating to choices also. And even if we’re not the doer, we still have the power to choose what is done in our lives — and that’s a big part of the life story we’re writing…because truthfully we wouldn’t get far in this life without others there with us along the way.

@Jen — I believe we can certainly tear pages out if we want to. Or if we want them to reflect back on some day, then keep them there just for that. And yes I agree, not every day is this easy stuff to do. But it is important stuff. If our life we’re talking about. How do we want that story to be when we’ve reached our end here on earth? jen, these are such good thoughts, thanks for sharing!

@Carla — You’ve hit upon something so key to this all — that life can seem topsy turvy sometimes. And while some things are out of our control, there is still so much that is — so much even that we think isn’t that really is — and this is so good to remember. What are we allowing in our lives? Carla, thank you for this thought…

Hi Lance: So many people carry their past scripts into their present daily lives. Like the quote says, we need to realize that every day is a fresh new beginning, and we can write anything we want in its pages.

  61. I used to hate to journal-the idea of writing what is already in my head just didn’t make sense until a fellow Guardian Ad Litem volunteer suggested it would help relieve the stress of helping abused children. And it worked! So now I write every day and I have to say, I feel less tense about a lot of things in my life.

    Thanks for sharing your ideas.

@Marelisa — Mare, that’s a great point…that we sometimes carry our past scripts with us. And they can also hold us back from our full potential. Each day CAN be a fresh start!

@Cynthia — Hi Cynthia. Thanks so much for stopping in here today! Journaling…something I should do more of… So, hearing this from you is so good for me. And I also think it’s great that you’re helping out abused children…what a gift to share…
