Draw a crazy picture,
Write a nutty poem,
Sing a mumble-gumble song,
Whistle through your comb.
Do a loony-goony dance
’Cross the kitchen floor,
Put something silly in the world
That ain’t been there before.

~ Shel Silverstein

  12. Hey Lance,
I shoulda known you were a Shel Silverstein fan! :-) This IS what it is all about isn’t it? Letting loose, not caring how we might look or what people might think… just busting out our creativity in whatever way it comes and celebrating it with joy! Thanks Lance… I’m feeling a bit delirious after my son’s bday sleepover with 5 kids so this is a GREAT time to do something silly! ;-) Happy Sunday and thanks for another wonderful quote!

  13. I love silly. Based on inspiration from a previous post of yours, I finally bought some fingerpaints the other day. It’s raining here in Boston this fine Sunday, I think it’s time to create some silliness! I love silly, and we don’t get enough of it. Based on your video posts this week, I know how much you like silly, too!

  14. Angelia sims says:

Car dancing, it’s almost a lost art. I am teaching my boyfriends three and five year olds so it will continue on. Something about grooving without moving from your seat, shaking the head, and swaying the arms with feeling. Other people parking usually do a doubletake, which means they are loving it. This quote makes me think of the video you just did with Josie :) There are so many ways to add some fun and silliness to each day!

This also makes me think of children and their amazing innocence. They love silly and they don’t care what others think. Most of us as adults are the opposite way. Too bad! I can only imagine what the world would be like if more of us added a fun and silly component to our lives :D

Hi Lance! Well by golly, that thar poem is my theme song! (Just ask hubs — he’s kept me around all these years for the entertainment factor!) My mom was a depressed person, very serious and doom and gloom all the time. By age 6 I consciously made the decision I would make her smile or laugh everyday — I was her medicine. That “program” sort of stuck with me. I didn’t realize at that time of my life how handy that approach to life would be! Thanks, mom!

@Bunny — Ha!! Great to have you here bright and early today! Laughter and fun are great medicine. Enjoy your rest, and awake ready to face the week with fun and levity!

    @Jeanne — Thank you so much, Jeanne…

@Lynn — Keep on being silly, Lynn. As much as kids put up a front that you’re “embarassing” them, I do think that they feel a deep connection to this fun. Very awesome of you and your sister!

@Chania Girl — *Ahem*… Ha! This absolutely made me laugh out loud Chania Girl! You are awesome!! And today I know you are living out the word of Shel Silverstein! They’re here for everyone to see…wow!! So, let me thank YOU! I’m loving this (well…except for the thought of actual ants in my pants — that just plain scary!)(and then seeing me dance — well, okay that’s way out there too!!).
I once knew a girl from Greece
She thought she could fly like the geese.
    Up she went, flapping away
Down she came, smiling all the way…
Started to laugh, then started to snort
Giggling so much, put her face in the cherry torte
(that’s as good as it gets at a comeback!)

@Miz — They’re all great — the put the fun in life!

And sleepovers can be…well, not so much sleep going on!! So — I know, having been there, that something silly to just decompress is going to be a really good thing! Have fun today Jenny!

@Stacey Shipman — I would have kind of guessed you’re a fan of silly!! So…you’re fingerpainting! Stacey, very cool!! Now…are you going to share you masterpiece???? And yep, I love silly and goofy too! (Ha! — let’s not talk about those videos…my stomach is starting to hurt!!!)

@Angelia — Car dancing! Way to go, passing it down to the younger generation! I think it’s great! And if you get some people watching you, then that means you’re out there doing something out of the ordinary — and in my book that’s extraordinary! Happy dancing on your way to church today!!

  37. Lance says:

@Avtcoach — Shel writes in a way that does exactly that, let’s us feel okay at being silly! And that’s pretty great! Sounds like you saw a great show last night — awesome!!

@Amanda — Happy Sunday Amanda! Silly-ness is definitely underrated, let’s give it more facetime! And it just feels so good, doesn’t it!

@Danny Clayton — It’s such a simple message, and also so good to be reminded of. I know that I too often don’t let that sillyness out. Glad to feed your sleep deprived brain today!

@Evita — Hi Evita! Ah, that video (it just won’t go away, will it!). And that’s it, we can all add some silliness to our days — in whatever way silliness comes to us. Kids get this, don’t they. It’s just natural. And then we grow up, and we have all these societal norms we think we have to adhere to. And pretty soon, silly doesn’t happen so much anymore. And that is too bad. So — let’s start something here — let’s bring a little extra silliness to every day — and who knows what that might inspire in someone else!!

@Suzen — Hi Suzen! Your theme song — awesome! And if this is your theme song, then your husband might just be onto something! And your story just proves how healing laughter can be!

@Jay — Thanks! And yeah — Chania Girl — her comment completely rocks these comments today! I’ve attempted a comeback…although I think I’ve fallen woefully short of her crazy poetic antics!

@Tess — Hi Tess! The media can be a real downer — it seems like it’s all about the bad going on in the world. Stepping away from that can be a very good thing — and just lighten our spirit a bit. And then, if we can even find a way to be a little extra goofy — wow, even better!! You too Tess, keep on rockin’ it!

  38. There is nothing so bad in the world that a little laughter can’t rectify. Thanks for sharing that reminder that we tend to take things too seriously. Enjoy the day! Erin

@Jodi — Hi Jodi! And the thing is, Jodi, it’s about having fun in what ways work for YOU. And I happen to think you probably do this, and do it well. Enjoy! And have a whole bunch of fun out there this week!

@Greg — Thanks much, Greg! And no matter how we were born, or where we’ve been in our lives — we can always still choose how we’ll respond to any situation. I know that I don’t do this often enough. Here’s to both of us getting out there this week and letting that inner child out!

@Nadia — Hi Nadia! “Cranky pants” — what a great way to describe what we DON’T want to be! I love it! Life is serious, and if that includes a whole bunch of serious fun, then woohoo!! In whatever way works for each of us… And thank you, about the picture — I really had a hard time finding one that felt right. This one finally did, it just took forever to find it!

@Daphne — Hi Daphne! Rainy gloomy weather can sometimes dampen our spirits. And that’s just when a bunch of silliness can go a long way toward brightening our day. Have fun out there with Donald!!

@Hilda — Hi Hilda! Whoa! Does it seem like we’re on the same wavelength quite a bit?!?! Pretty wild! Anyway, have fun out there “lightening up”…I know you will!!

  40. Laurie says:

HI! Lance maybe I’m not too crazy but I keep singing “We all live in a yellow submarine”! I’ve been singing this spontaneously for MONTHS now. Now if I can just get a dance to go with it, then that might be less annoying.….well, probably not.

  41. Lance says:

@Carla — Hi Carla! And that doesn’t even matter, does it — how well you can dance. If you’re out there having fun — so what! And if dancing brightens your day — then that’s awesome that you’re doing that — what a way bring some fun into your day!!

@Lori — Hi Lori! Hey, I love chocolate cake — let’s have some together sometime! And then we’ll whistle through our combs! And then…we’ll laugh until it hurts!! That’d be fun!!

@Barbara — Hi Barbara! Yes, this poem sure does bring a smile! And here’s to finding that silly spot within each of us, and letting that out for the world to see!

@Karl — That is very cool, Karl! And I think it shows right there the power of reading, and what we can get from it. And then, when we come across an author that expands our imagination — wow!! Enjoy the Silverstein you’re going to read this evening!

@Jenny — Hi Jenny! Shel Silverstein’s works are so good! I love that poem by the name “Where the Sidewalk Ends”! Enjoy the reading you have in front of you!!

@Tim Enalls — Hi Tim! And that’s an excellent example of being a bit goofy — just by saying something a little “off the wall”! And who knows — that might just be what someone needs to hear — the message that being a little bit silly is A-OK!

@Erin — Hi Erin! Laughter is great medicine!! Here’s to all of us lightening up a bit, and really living a fully and fun life! And now, on your suggestion Erin — I’m off to enjoy this great day!

@Jannie — Jannie…I kind of knew you were what Shel Silverstein wrote about when he created this piece! You live wacky and silly in everything I’ve witnessed…and I’m better for that…much better… So, thank you — but I only rock because YOU rock!

@Jan — Hi Jan! I’m familiar with a few pieces that Shel Silverstein wrote, but not “Frozen Dreams”. Now, I’ll have to check that out — thank you!!

@Patricia — Hi Patricia! Ha! Yes, this is NOT a bedtime nursery rhyme, is it! Shel Silverstein writes lively pieces, that can really get your imagination (and your body) going!

@Caity — Hi Caity! Ah, so true. Reading these as a kid, and then re-reading them as an adult puts a whole new perspective on what the words mean. And I would also say that reading these words at different points in our adult life will also produce different thoughts about it all, as well. And that’s part of what especially makes these words he’s written so meaningful — the stand the test of time, and are so good for us, always…

@Diane AZ — It sure is a great way to warm up to letting our creativity flow! And part of that is being in the moment, and letting our imagination not only run wild, but also be expressed outwardly — onto canvas, into words, dancing in the street, etc, etc. And that’s a great place to be at…

@Tracy — Hi Tracy! Kids are a great way to be and act silly — and be seen as normal! The thing is, though, anyone can do that — let their inner kid out to shine! What you’re also doing, Tracy, is passing this onto your kids — and that’s very awesome!

@Marelisa — Hi Mare. I love “Where the Sidewalk Ends” too! The other, I’m not familiar with (I’ll have to check it out). And this is a great quote that you’ve used in your ebook (in case I haven’t told you — it’s excellent — and a great resource for me to refer back to when I need a little inspiration!). I think it very much speaks to letting the creative genius within each of us out — and that comes from what might seem silly or strange or weird to the world — great idea, are though — until they become real! Thanks Mare, so good to read this tonight!

@Lisa’s Chaos — Shel always has a way of lifting our spirits!

@Walter — Hi Walter! Yes, and that “mark” can be in whatever way comes from the depths of your heart — and when it does — whoa! All sorts of awesomeness!

@J.D. Meier — A looney tunes dance — I’d say that qualifies!! And a loony-goony dance…well, I think that’s whatever kind of silly dance you want to dance (at least, that’s my take on it!).

@Chania Girl — And now I’m laughing (again!)!!! And…oops…a SNORT! Your *ahem* laugh is catchy! Cherry torte — yummy for sure!! Happy Monday to you too!! (*snort*)

@Mimi — Kids have a way of helping to bring this back out in us, don’t they. And I think that’s because it’s their natural tendency to act this way… Now, if we could just do that all the time, think of what our world would be like…

Hi Lance .. great picture and great words .. and certainly bringing a smile to everyone’s face — a fun look at life .. thanks I need a bit of light relief. Good for the soul .. especially as I’m so tired I rearranged some of the words .. so my thoughts were in a slightly different direction, til I realised .. but two funnies = good exercise for my laughing face.

Here’s a little silly diddy. Sing it to the tune of the television show “The Beverly Hillbillies”

Let me tell you a story about a man named Lance,
He’s ready to encourage if you give him half a chance
And then one day as I was reading on his blog, I laughed out
loud ’cause I think Lance has last a cog!
.… Baby food that is, donuts and cool whip

Well the first thing you know there’s food everywhere
Baby food and donuts and there’s cool whip in his hair
I laughed out loud at this at this delectable delight
I tell you Lance’s blog is one very cool site…

It’s The Jungle of Life Blog!
    (insert banjo music here)

Thanks for the great lift today Lance!

  61. A little wacky… that totally suits my mood for the day. (Though it’s Monday now!) I just read SARK’s book “Succulent Wild Woman” and this just seems to come at the exactly timed moment. :)

Being silly rocks! Great thought for the day… or for every day, really. ;)

  63. Lance says:

@Hilary — Hi Hilary! Thank you! And even rearranging some of these words, they still come out fun! Laughter is so good, isn’t it…

@Mama Zen — Ha!! Then you’re having some very awesome days!!

@Liara — Yes, the choices we have, and how we live our lives — this becomes our life. Whatever we choose…great thought Liara!

@Jonathan — Hi Jonathan. Sometimes the best things are the simplest. And where do I come up with these ideas? Hmmm.…I’ve taken to not sleeping, AND making my kids work tirelessly for me…(okay, maybe not quite like that!). I guess I just try to follow my heart…sometimes that leads me someplace quickly, and other times the journey is much longer.

@Keith — Wow!! Keith, I’m laughing out loud!! This is hilarious!! I love it, so creative!! I’m thinking I should buy myself a banjo now, in fact! Woohoo! You made my day with this! Rock on, my friend!

@Nathalie — Heh, we can be a little wacky any day of the week, right Nathalie! So, you’re a succulent wild woman…and now you’re here thinking about wacky dances and silly paintings — that’s all sorts of awesomeness!!

@FatFighterTV — Definitely a great thought for every day! Keep on being silly, my friend!!

Shel Silverstein brings back so many memories — good olé’ jr. high days.

It does feel good to do something wild and out of the ordinary. It not only lightens our day, but also the day of other people. Thank you Lance for the reminder to step out there. You always have a way of brightening the world and today is no exception.

I’m reading this on a Friday, the kids’mid term holiday has just begun and this is a perfect happy post to read before logging off! My son makes us laugh at anything so it’ll be a great two weeks!

  66. Lance says:

@Jennifer — Shel has some great material. Fun to read as a kid, and even more meaning when you think about it as an adult…a pretty great combination! Taking those steps that seem a bit “on the fringe” can really be just what we need sometimes to spur ourselves on to greater things, and to give others a sense of this being “okay” to do… So, here’s to wild and out of the ordinary!

@Janice — Enjoy the two weeks you’ll have with your kids! And have fun being a bit crazy…however that happens to fall!

  67. Rose says:

What a great reminder to take time from our busy life to laugh.
