We’re heading into the rainy season in California, Lance, and this photo is a beautiful accompaniment for it.

One of my favorite-est memories is my father and I getting caught in a downpour in Florida, getting soaked to the skin and loving every minute of it!

Jumping in & out of mud puddles is fun, too! And those rain boots are so dang pretty!

Good night from PST … zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Wow that brings back childhood memories, times of fun and laughter. Now I settle for the occassional mudmask.

    Have a fun Sunday

  4. Lance,
This is just so so wonderful. I love the fun that comes with the rains. Somehow even though we might wear all those gum boots and raincoats we do still get wet.
Something like life.…we try to be so so cautious but still end up with a lot of heart ache. The better thing though is to go bare feet..no raincoats…out in the ‘rain of life’ and just enjoy it!! :)
Life will be so so fun…atleast you got wet ‘having fun’ ;)
With love and lots of Sunday Happiness..

Lnance, This is so funny. I just spent an hour yesterday with my boys jumping in puddles. Put on their rainjackets and pants and let them run off. Had my boots on too and joined in the fun. Had forgotten how much laughter it brings.
It was raining all day. Today the sun is out again.
You have to make the best of the weather. And instead of staying indoors I wanted to show them that rain can be fun too. They loved it.

  6. Davina says:

    Hi Lance.
Cool boots. I’ve been grumbling about the rainy weather lately. But, whenever I DO get out there I will walk through puddles on purpose. The best memories are when I was a wee girl… on my hands and knees, scooping tadpoles out of the puddles. We’d catch them and keep them in a bucket and watch them grow legs.

  12. Lance says:

@Linda Abbit — I have a story about the rainy CA season. We visited in November, a few years ago. And had one day to go to Disneyland — and it rained and was cold the whole day! A couple of years later, we went to Disneyworld in Florida — and it rained! So, we now call Disney the rainiest place on earth! All in good fun, though!! Playing in the rain can be so much fun! Happy sleeping to you…

@Suzie — Aren’t those boots great! Ah…so you need the rain (or a big hose!!). Me? I’ll probably pass on the mudmask!! Happy Sunday to YOU!

    @Jeanne — Thank you Jeanne!

@Zeenat — And getting wet is a part of all the fun, isn’t it! Just like life…it’s about getting in there and getting our hands a little dirty…but we are in there, and doing “it”…whatever that “it” is for us. And that is fun and joy-filled! Enjoy your Sunday, my friend!

@Mimi — Well…how about that!! YOU are living this!! So cool!! Awesome that you were out there, in the rain, with your kids — and having a blast with it all!

@Davina — Hi Davina. Some of the fun of rain and puddles, are some of the new critters we see — like the tadpoles. When it has rained for a while, it can get a little gloomy…and that is definitely a great time to get out there and walk through some of those puddles!!

@Jannie — Good clean mud!! So, I could smear that stuff on me…and be clean as a whistle!! I’ll have to try that and let you know how it goes… And nothing like having Jannie here to brighten my morning! Woohoo!!

@Tom Volkar — Mud balls!! Now that IS fun! And according to Jannie, it can also be clean! Who knew??

@Dr. Rus — Happy mud puddle jumping!!

@Trish — Making the most of what we have…I’d say that is really what this is all about! Very awesome!!

@Diane AZ — Awesome!! For rain! And for finding those puddle it creates!!

  16. Julie says:

Lance, your photo and quote this week are me! I’ve often seen family members make googly eyes at me, their silent admonitions to “please, will you just grow UP!” My answer: NO! :) Friends, though, encourage me. Why is that, I wonder. Hm. And, yes, surely it all started with stomping and splashing and making like a ship plowing through the ocean with my feet sluicing the water away as I slid them along the rain-swollen gutters. It’s akin to making houses and forts out of cardboard furniture boxes. What’s not to love? And, why, I ask [grinning], must we stop playing just because we’re adults? Sheesh… After all, make-believe is what makes the world go ’round!

I believe it is that kind of abandon which births the genius withing us!

@Jay — Hey there Jay! Ha!!! I think you and Miguel are onto something here…and for the fun of it…I’m going to make today FUN! Have a great one!

@Joanna — Hi Joanna! Well…that turkey trot…no, it was just mostly cold and windy (with a couple of snowflakes!). That didn’t stop about 4,000 people from running in it though (both a 5K and a 10K). Warmth (and fun) in numbers!

@Julie — They are you for sure, Julie!! You bubble over with fun and joy! So…I’m with your friends (or maybe better yet — I am one of your friends!!) — here’s to splashing through all parts of our life! And when that day comes that we meet…if there are no puddles, we’ll make our own!!

@Tess — Awesome choice in neighbors, Tess!! Hey, I think I’d move into that neighborhood too!

@Katie West — Whew…you agree (I was worried you wouldn’t!!!). Yes, I really think this quote could be your mantra for life. You DO live it!! And you know what — it is so great to see! And…I think by you doing this, you also give others permission that it is okay to be themselves, and to live life on their terms (and that is even greater and more beautiful!). Sunshiny, cloudyshiny, rainshiny…we’ll all be happy, shiny people!! Oh, and coffee?? Do I really NEED coffee?? Well…I’m going to keep you in suspense…that question gets answered here later this week…(Tuesday, I think)

@Katie West — Hey, look who is back!! Great to see you again! In a game of puddle jumping and tag…I’m pretty sure your four year old is going to win!! Have fun, though, with all that your day holds!!

@Evita — Hi Evita. Yes, this e. e. cummings quote is all about fun (isn’t it great!). And reading it makes me want to find some extra ways today to bring on the fun. Have a very fun-filled and wonderful day, Evita!

  27. Hi Lance,

I am a puddle jumper…I am notorious for jumping in puddles. So this quote speaks to my heart.

Mud can be fun too but you need the right shoes to fully enjoy the experience. And don’t get me started on rain. I love to walk in the rain without an umbrella. Such an awesome feeling especially if the weather is warm.

And I would love to have such a pair of boots. I have to pass that picture on to Santa Claus. :)

  29. Lance, great thought. It reminds me of the importance of playing in life.

What happened to just playing? I remember as a kid getting home from school and just playing outside all night long, rain or shine. During the daylight we played sports and during the night we would play hide and seek, catch lightning bugs, etc. When raining, we would stomp in puddles and come back soaked.

A couple Tibetan proverbs are fitting here, “Children are our real teachers. Listen carefully and they will teach you about the lost world of carefree being in the present moment.” & “Just become like a child that discovers the beauty of the world every moment again and again.” (Terrah featured these in her article on 13 life lessons she learned from her travel experiences)

We must introduce the concept of just playing back into our lives. Get lost in the present moment because that is all we have. We should all stop taking life so seriously because none of us get out alive.

    Have fun! Carpe Diem!

@Caroline — Hi Caroline. Great point, and something I hadn’t thought of — how the busyness of the holiday season can really zap some of the fun from life. So, YES, here’s to a little more play, and a lot less busyness!!

@CG Walters — Thanks much CG!

@Nadia — I love your attitude Nadia!! Warmth definitely helps when the rain is coming down. That reminds me of a soccer practice we had this fall. It was pouring rain, and I still had practice. And it was the most fun we’ve had at practice…until everyone started getting cold. A warm rain is like “fun in the sun…or I guess…maybe fun in the rain!). Let me know if Santa brings you a pair of those boots!

@Akemi — Isn’t that picture all about fun!!

@Elliot — Playing is so good for us…it really helps to take things less seriously. And that is a very good thing. And I love how you have highlighted quotes with children as the underlying theme — they are so good at being free-spirited, and that’s something we can all take something away from, no matter how much we are that way ourselves already. Thanks much for all your thoughts!

@Lynn — e.e. cummings sure does sound like quite the fun guy to hang out with!!

  32. Tim says:

    Hi Lance:

I don’t splash in puddles or play in the mud much these days, but I frequently play games with the CTA buses in my city as I walk down the busy street near my place during heavy storms. I’ve lost plenty of these battles which have required a change of clothes or a few hours in wet clothing. Either way, I do enjoy myself and would prefer walking in the rain than stuck in a car during rush hour traffic on most days. Thanks for a nice post and picture!

I “let” my children play in the rain too–lots of people don’t so that makes it doubly fun for them:)

@Avtcoach — What you accomplished at the race was awesome! Glad to have you here today, and whenever you can make it!

@Angelia — Your talk about Hurricane Charlie reminds me of when we visited Disneyworld when Hurricane Wilma hit (and we were in a tent — yikes!!). Heavy rains ahead of time just made for fun walks through all the puddles (and just generally getting soaked!!). So — I love that you all danced in the rain at Universal Studios!! I hope your rainy Sunday in Texas was a beautiful one!!

@Tabitha — Tabitha, knowing where you came from…you have a completely different perspective on rain. So, I think it is wonderful that you now go out and run in it…that is God’s love in action!

@Henie — “the puddle of life”…I love it, Henie! Life can definitely look like a big murky puddle quite often…if we just jump in, though, we find out it’s really not bad at all, and can be a lot of fun! It’s so good to see you here today Henie! Hugs right back to you!

@Sami — Hey Sami! Well…thank YOU for being our resident mud pie taste tester around here. See, there’s another skill I didn’t know you had. So you are not only Future Girl, you are now also Mud Pie Maven! (has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?!?!?!?)

@Wilma — Playing in the real, earthly mud can be so much fun! When the waters get muddied in real life…that can be a different story — although jumping in there, too, can really be so good too. Stepping back from the mud puddles in life, usually only lead to what was just a mud puddle becoming something much bigger and more difficult to work through. And anyway… mud puddle, even in our daily lives, can be lots of fun, if we approach them with the right attitude!

@Audra — Hey Audra! You are way too nice to me! (you are!) When we make it out to see you (I’m thinking that the more I say it, the sooner it will happen!), you will be getting the biggest hug!! And that wonderful to hear about your Thanksgiving celebration! Ours was great too — although mostly spent on the road traversing the state from one place to the next (what were we thinking, anyway???). Happy Sunday to you and your family!

@Joy — Hearing about you running in the rain, on the beach — sounds so peaceful. And you know what, Joy? We let our children play in the rain too. It’s so much fun! I love the way you tie this in to the holiday season — and think of it as a way to see the wonder of the season…much like the wonder of a puddle of water. Simple joys!

  43. My kids love to play in the mud! On occasion, as a treat, my older kids will play “stews” with the little ones. They are all Iron Chef fans so the little guys serve as the “shoe” chefs to the big kids! I have to admit I don’t always participate but I have some great pictures!

  47. J.D. Meier says:

I think it’s a great reminder that sometimes to have fun in the moment, you have to be in the moment.

Mud and puddles can be a blast while you splash around or kick it up … it’s just when you start thinking about how you don’t want to get dirty or how you’ll have to clean yourself up, that it’s no longer fun.

Sometimes life’s messy. Actually, lots of times it’s messy. We just need to know how to kick it up and have fun with it. In the words of Richard Branson, sometimes you just gotta say, “screw it, let’s do it.“

I’m a puddle man myself. I take the dog our rain or shine and we run around the local elementary school. She is jumping all over the puddles and mud. I have to give her a hose shower every time we are done. But it’s worth it.

@Diane/Fit to the Finish — Kids and mud seem to go well together! I’m reminded of a soccer game I was coaching a couple of years ago. It was cold and rainy — miserable by most standards. And…the kids thought it was the most fun game of the year — even though they left completely muddy and soaked! And the game your kids plays sounds great!

@Marelisa — Hi Mare. I love your attitude! Awesome that you are getting out there, in spite of “less that perfect” conditions! I find running in the rain to be almost cleansing, in a way.

@Yum Yucky — Hey Josie. Might I suggest that you splash some of that dish water at those kids running around your house…or maybe even your husband! Start a water fight! The “Mom” in you will love it!!!!

@Barbara — Hi Barbara. They sure are bright colored boots!! So, sometimes all it takes is adding a little color to our wardrobe, and that can change our outlook — pretty sweet!! I have some mismatched striped socks I’ll wear to do just that…

@J.D. Meier — Great point! When we start to over-think something (messy or not), we can easily get caught up in why NOT to do it (like jumping in the muddy puddles). And yet, when we do that — when we jump in (to whatever), it can be a lot of fun!

@Stacey Shipman — So…Stacey…we’d have a blast walking down the street on a rainy day! I’m guessing no one would be dry! And I don’t have any colorful boots either (although they sure are bright and cheery!). And thank you, it was a wonderful weekend…although good to get back home, too…

@Karl — Hey puddle man! Maybe that could be your superhero name!! Dogs are a great example of living in the moment — they live for “living in the moment” — whether that’s taking a nap, or running and jumping in puddles! Hmmm…there’s a lot we could learn from these creatures!

  51. The picture says it all! Go ahead, dip your feet into the mud and have fun fun fun in this world :-) Let us never forget the spirit of little children.

Hi Lance .. not a good idea for us at the moment .. those boots ain’t no good .. you need fishing waders .. and strong legs .. didn’t see yours ..so don’t know if they’be sufficiently strong .. the torso was pretty taught, but perhaps a little lacking muscle for the rain job.

Splashing kids .. aren’t they just wonderful .. great wellie boots ..

I have some rubber boots like the one in the picture, but mine are green with a frog face on them. I love jumping in puddles when I wear them. Seriously, that’s what I do when I have them on. :) BTW, love e. e. cummings!

  55. Lance says:

@Jocelyn — That’s right, dip on into that mud and have FUn with it!! Great to see you here Jocelyn!

@Hilary — Hi Hilary. I guess I’ll just have to keep working on the “muscle definition”!!! So I’m ready for any storm that comes my way!! Little puddles…those I can probably handle!

@Colleen — Hey Colleen! Those boots are really pretty awesome!

@FatFighterTV — Hi Sahar. Green frog face boots — those sound spectacular! And FUN! And so cool that you use these for puddle jumping! Oh, and e.e. cummings is great, isn’t he!

  56. Just took a peek here and saw this as I’m listening to the early morning rain pouring outside my window! Buckets and bathtubs and I don’t know what.…but rain that typically should be snow by now. Definitely a day for funky rainboots and mukluks left stored in the closet.

    Gentle, splashy, fun..fun…fun…bouncy, Tigger steps,

Laura — We had our first snow just the other day. Otherwise, it’s been rain for us, too. And at a time when snow is a little more likely. Today, though, it would have to be a snowball fight here instead of puddle jumping! And I love the addition of your “Tigger steps” here…a perfect fit!!

I’m so sorry I’m late with this comment. I just scrolled through my RSS feed, and after the rainy weekend we had here in LA this weekend, I just had to comment.

Sometimes I miss the rain, but after this weekend, I’m only missing the thunder.

Thank you for sharing this great reminder that rain can be fun. For me, because it’s kind of rare, it’s all the more fun.

Lisa — It’s great to have you here today! And it doesn’t matter when you get here, it’s all good! Glad you had a chance to experience some rain in your neighborhood! I have a funny story about visiting LA about five years ago. We came in November, for a conference I was attending. My family joined me for a long weekend beforehand. We had one day (Saturday) to go to Disneyland…and it rained and was downright cold (even for us, from Wisconsin!). We came up with a new saying for Disney — The Rainiest Place On Earth! My aunt and uncle still thank us for coming, and bringing the rain that year! Seems like by the end of that day at Disney, the rain wasn’t seeming all that puddle-wonderful!!
