Lance, this is beautiful on so many levels! The first thought that came to mind was, what a wonderful world we’d be living in if everyone looked at the world this way. It’s amazing what a small shift in perception can do.
I really love this quote, especially when he said, “A man must fill his life with meaning, meaning is not automatically given to life.” It’s funny, my coworker and I were just chatting about something similar on our drive down to Indiana. We were discussing Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning,” a book about Frankl’s experience in WWII concentration camps. Aside from pure chance, Frankl came to the conclusion that the determining factor on whether one survived the camps was whether or not that person had created meaning in his or her life. He claimed individuals could find meaning in 3 different ways: through relationships (love), work, or by connecting to something greater than themselves. I feel as though I’ve been fortunate enough to find all three. However, creating meaning is a continuously evolving process, rather than something we just find once and latch onto. As Potok said, creating meaning is hard work! But, the fruits are so worth the toil.
Many people are against the idea that life is without intrinsic meaning, but I think it it’s incredibly freeing and makes life filled with endless possibility! Each person has the opportunity and potential to create meaning in his or her own life. Lance, you see that potential in everyone, and your writing is just one of the many ways you draw that potential out of others. It’s truly an amazing gift…one I’m happy to receive.

Thank you Lance, for this beautiful thing. It’s easy to loose sight of these truths. It’s easy to forget. Particularly in this frenzied world where there are so many superficial things demanding our attention. Mainstream science wants to sell us the idea that it’s all just a matter of smaller and smaller pieces. That given enough time and a large enough computer, it’s all reducible to numbers.
But when you really take a moment to think—to really think—about how you are even able to think, and perceive… about how any of this exists at all. It’s truly mind boggling. Sometimes I think it’s beyond the capability of the human intellect to comprehend. Good thing we’re not merely human.

This is why I am so passionate too about us taking care of and supporting our bodies properly. They are amazing and can heal and prevent so much, but when we support them properly. We are the miracle, and we can live that out to its fullest potential even more when we are conscious of how we treat our bodies and our beings from the foods we eat to the thoughts we think.

I couldn’t help but have tears in my eyes reading this beautiful piece. I, too, believe life is a miracle. From the tiny fragile cell we start — to the workings and growing of our bodies to maturity.
And when I stood in ER next to my husband of four days with the possibilty of a damaged heart that would need a transplant. I was grateful for every second of it and whatever miracle of our life together we had left. Amazing to find him in this huge world. Amazing to have these miracle moments magnified to be grateful for. Humbled by my love for him — no matter what. Seven days later, it was just a virus and his heart was undamaged. Miracles indeed.
I know you always say it and you live it. Life is a miracle and thank you for always reminding me of that.

I am sort of torn between authentic play/working hard/and balance/gentle rest for nourishment to enjoy and give freely from what is replenished by inner well — but not rest in a lazy sense.
I see the space, and want to fill it but now am opening up to really discover what is the deepest part that is calling my name –often this is the Impossible that wants to be made possible. I want this to be my next step.. Clearing emotional spaces to do that.

I love coming to your blog and seeing what treasures I will find. Today I found the reaffirmation of what I felt this morning as I was hiking through the woods. The miracle of life! Amazing!
I feel that this miracle of our own human body is so brilliant, so beyond comprehension. “it is hard work to fill one’s life with meaning.” I agree that it is hard, but it is also so joyful and meaningful. As each of us is a miracle, each of us has a miracle and purpose to gift to the world. It is so fun to discover what that might be.
I believe that our gifts continue to change, grow, and morph as we become older and wiser, too. That, in itself is a miracle, as we grow to adapt to bring new meaning to each phase of our lives.

Eternity is something that is really not fully grasp-able (in my opinion). So, that is a challenging measure to make. What it says to me — the span of our life, the length of time we are alive here on this earth in the form we’re in today — that’s a minuscule portion of this eternity.
