LisaMarie

“The degree of health, happiness, success, and meaning in your personal and professional life is a matter of choice, commitment, and discipline, not chance or circumstance. You are Where You Choose to Be. As you stand at the threshold of unparalleled success, remember, a whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Are you where you want to be?” ~ Lisa Marie Platske

Seeing the possibilities in life!  Today I have Lisa Marie Platske with us.  Lisa Marie runs a leadership development company, Upside Thinking, focused on her speaking engagements, consulting services, and personalized coaching.

Lisa Marie is someone I “met” online about a year ago.  We spoke several times after first connecting, and she was there to give me a real belief in what IS possible.  Since those first beginnings, I have used Lisa Marie’s coaching services, and have had the opportunity to connect both personally and professionally with her.

Today, I sit down with Lisa Marie, and we talk about life and where she is at today.

Please join me in welcoming Lisa Marie here.

1. Tell us a little bit about who “you” are (family, career, any special life experiences you’d like to share, etc.)
I’m happily married to a supportive and loving man who brings out the best in me. We were both working as Federal law enforcement officers when we met and I resigned 2 months before we married. (On a side not, we met sitting next to each other in a leadership training class as my maiden name was “Palansky”. After we married, if I would’ve hyphenated, I’d be Lisa Marie Palansky-Platske. LOL ~ Say that fast, 3 times in row.)

Lance’s Commentary:  That IS a tongue twister!  And having had the opportunity to meet both you and your husband, I know how much you both deeply support and love each other.  What a great life connection you two have!

2. How long have you had your business, Upside Thinking?  And what led you to go in this direction?
I formed Upside Thinking, Inc. after getting married. I remember sitting at my desk 6 months into the venture and thinking, “Lisa Marie, you just moved to a new state, 3000 miles away from any family or friends to support you, and you’ve opened a business. What do you know about business? You don’t have a business degree or business background. What were you thinking?!?” But here I am, almost five years later, looking back and realizing it was one of the best decisions of my life. As I tell my clients, “A journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step.” Most people, however, are afraid to take the first step.
Interestingly, I never had a desire to start my own business. I formed Upside Thinking, Inc. because as I looked at my unique talents, skills, and abilities in developing leaders through my work in the Federal government, combined with my desire for the freedom to spend time with the people I love, it seemed like starting a business made the most sense. Ultimately, I decided to take a leap and trust that a net would appear. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, otherwise I may not have taken the first step. And, I think it is also why I’m passionate about helping aspiring and developing entrepreneurs become savvy in their businesses.

Lance’s Commentary:  Lao-Tzu really was onto something with that quote!  It’s taking that first step that is going to get us moving in the direction of our dreams.  Without the steps, our dreams remain just that — dreams.  And Lisa Marie, I know you support others in deeply loving ways, myself included.  That passion for seeing others achieve their dreams shines through so brightly in all you do!

3.  I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to use your coaching services you offer through Upside Thinking (they’re great!).  Tell us a little about this service, and is there anything else you offer?

Gosh, Lance, you’re making me blush. Thank you.
While I am an inspirational speaker, write a killer newsletter — the Upside Thinker, and am the author of Designing Your Destiny, I also offer group and one-on-one leadership coaching services.
There are tens of thousands of coaches out there. What makes me different is that I truly do care about the well-being and success of my clients sometimes even more than they do. Therefore, I only accept work from up to 10 incredibly committed individuals per year.
When I work with a client, we enter a partnership that enables them to make profound shifts in their thought processes which in turn produce measurable results in their personal and professional lives. I teach my clients how to clarify their vision, beliefs, and values, as well as identify and overcome the internal and external obstacles that have kept them from reaching their full potential, so they can benefit from a larger sphere of influence, spend more time with their loved ones, and increase their wealth building capacity.

Lance’s Commentary:  Your words spoken here are words that I have been personally touched by.  Your care and love shine through, Lisa Marie.  I think back to our first few telephone calls…conversations that you offered out of the deep goodness of your heart.  I still go back to those days, now a year ago, and how your belief in me was so touching.  And from that we have forged not only a professional connection, but also a very meaningful personal connection as well.  I am honored to know you, and to call you friend.

4. You have a conference you host in January.  Could you tell us a little bit about that that’s all about?
Oh, this is my baby so forgive me…and stop me….if I ramble. I LOVE this event for so many reasons and I created this event for those same reasons.
The annual Leadership Success Summit: Getting Results in Changing Times is for savvy, entrepreneurial women in business or strong businessmen who understand the value of collaborating with smart businesswomen.

The two-day event is complete with INSPIRATIONAL speakers who will share their SECRETS of success. This year the line-up includes:
• Rene Reyes, International Poet Laureate, Legal Practitioner, Author and Radio Host
• Eve Yen, Founder of Multi-Million Dollar Venture, Diamond Wipes International
• Nancy Marmolejo, One of the Top 50 Most Influential and Powerful Women in Social Media
• Lisa Marie Platske, Award-winning Entrepreneur and Leadership Expert
Jo Della Penna, Small Business Coach and Life Balance Expert
• Lauren Solomon, Image Expert for Career TV and the Reality Makeover TV show, ReMake My Life
• Chellie Campbell, Author of The Wealthy Spirit and Zero to Zillionaire
• Mary Cantando, Mentored thousands of Women in Business to Reach the Million Dollar Level
• And more…….

What’s different is that this event brings business building tools, connection opportunities, and empowerment strategies together.  And, the speakers actually hang around to connect with the attendees rather than sharing and bolting like many of the conferences I’ve attended.

In a day in which we face unprecedented changes — locally, nationally and globally — far too many leaders are standing in the shadows. This is YOUR opportunity to LEAD!

Here’s some of what you’ll learn by attending –

* The “Missing Element” that most entrepreneurs FAIL TO EMPLOY in their businesses!

* EASILY get amazing results in selling your products and services in a way that feels fun for you and the prospect!

* Learn the SECRETS to experience massive success in starting or expanding your business using universal principles that get results!

* IGNITE a powerful process to MAGNETIZE the resources or people you want to better leverage your time!

* Need cash FAST? Learn how to CREATE a Wealthy Spirit that will turn you into a creative money generator!

* FEEL a greater sense of peace about finances and learn how to navigate the economic bumps so you can attract those that want what you have and will PAY you gladly for it!

* LEARN the concept of energy management and how it can help you get more done in less time and have more fun in the process!

* Find out how vibrational output can SOLVE any business or personal problem fast! Learn a process that takes less than 5 minutes a day to implement and you will see and feel the changes in one week!

This event will not only transform and uplift attendees, but will provide incredible new ideas and connections. Most people leave with a new friend, lots of contacts, and words of wisdom, encouragement and enlightenment that motivate action. Attendees should come open to transformation both personally and professionally.

Ohhhhhhh.….and right now I have a 50% off HOLIDAY SPECIAL.…..Only $297 or save $100 and bring a client or a friend — 2 tickets for only $497!!!! (Offer expires December 30, 2010.)

5.  You’ve recently moved across the country – from one side of the United States, to the other.  Touch upon what the challenges and joys in this have been.
I’ve moved a few times in my life and so this wasn’t new to me. I find the biggest challenge to any move is leaving the circle of supportive friends that you have. However, the biggest joy has come from leaving that circle of friends as every move forces you out of your comfort zone. In my case, this move allowed me to continue creating a bigger version of myself and my business.

Lance’s Commentary:  I love this thought, and how it really applies to all of us — and not only to physical moves, but also to moving through all phases of our life.  When we are doing this with a connection to something greater, that really is about creating a bigger version of ourselves.  And that’s pretty great all around!

6. Tell us one unexpected thing that has happened to you in the last year.
That’s a tough one. Life is full of surprises and I think my whole life is one “unexpected” adventure. For example, over the past few months, I won contracts I didn’t think I’d get and lost contracts I thought were a sure thing. I was featured as an expert on a television show (never thought that would happen) and then the following month the programmers permanently deleted the file of my interview (major bummer). I traveled to Argentina in September but didn’t take a trip back to PA in October for the first time in 20 years. One unexpected thing? Heck, from my perspective, my list is never ending as every day brings the unexpected .

Lance’s Commentary:  The truth is, we never know exactly what is going to happen in the moments of our life.  We can plan, but still there are moments that will waver in both directions from what we have planned and expect.  Lisa Marie, I very much appreciate your honesty with this answer.  Things don’t always go as planned, for any of us — some of it’s in a very good way, and some not so good.  Or maybe…it’s our perspective on this too.  When things don’t go as planned, this is really another opportunity for us to grow and challenge ourselves.  You do!  Always…

7. If you had to pick one thing as your greatest achievement, what would it be (and why)?
Becoming an upside thinker. Because I didn’t always see the best in others or myself, this transformation has created real and tangible results in my life. Upside isn’t the same as positive. Upside is about seeing, and acting upon the unlimited possibilities in your life. It’s about taking responsibility for your choices and having the commitment and discipline to create a life full of happiness, success, and meaning. It’s also about realizing that whether or not it is clear to you, everything in the Universe is unfolding as it should.

Lance’s Commentary:  I love your definition of “upside”!  Kind of gives new meaning to the term “upside down”!!

8. Let’s say you’re visiting Wisconsin, and get stranded because of a major snowstorm (it happens!).  There’s no television and no phones.  What do you do while you wait out the storm?
Well, I don’t have a television at home so that wouldn’t be any different. And, while I do love my cell phone, I also appreciate life-long learning. I imagine I’d seize the opportunity to read a good book or two and, since I’m incredibly social, I’d make a friend or two.
I’ve been stranded at an airport before so that isn’t a stressor. However, being physically stranded in the snowstorm brings visions of the movie New in Town to my thoughts ~ LOL!

Lance’s Commentary:  In a day and age where televisions are as prominent as they are, I applaud you on choosing to skip this.  There are a myriad of others ways to actually engage our minds, and I know you ARE doing this!  And the movie “New In Town” sure does seem to fit here!!  Might I also suggest snow angels and sledding?  Lots of fun!

9.  Define love – what does that mean to you?

Well, this question sure caught me off guard as it has baffled philosophers for centuries. To me, love is as love does. People who love each other are capable of bringing out the best in one another. Choosing love and choosing to love are decisions. I also know that you need to love yourself wholly and completely before choosing to love another.

Lance’s Commentary:  So, what I’m reading here is that love is a verb!  I love that!  It’s more than just paying lip service to the word “love”, it’s acts that we do with love behind them that really IS love.  Wow!!

10.  Deep down, what makes you uniquely “you”?
My compassion, upsidedness, and energy are the three things that make me uniquely, “me”. I have experienced my share of heartache, disappointment, and pain and through it all have developed a compassionate heart for people. I’ve also learned how to live an incredibly upside life as I mentioned earlier. And, my energy enables me to change the feel in a room just by my presence. I don’t know how or why, I just know that I’ve been told that again and again throughout my life.

Lance’s Commentary:  Lisa Marie, I have personally been the recipient of that compassion from you, and so I know what a gift this is that you have.  Your heart is so big, and you give so deeply when you connect.  What a light you are unto the world!  What a light you have been in MY world!

Closing Comments:  It’s been great having you here today Lisa Marie!  Just like all of our emails, phone calls, and meeting in person — every time we connect, I’m drawn into the amazing love you give of yourself.  Today is no exception, and it is an honor to have you here. All that you say here, I know to be YOU.  You have opened your home to my family and I, you have been our tour guides (the sun dial still amazes me!), you coach from your heart, and you care deeply about those you know.  That’s a recipe for a beautiful life!

Lisa Marie, your presence and generosity here today are deeply appreciated.  More than that, though, knowing you are there, always, as a friend, is a real gift!  As you go forth, know that I wish you only the best as you continue down this amazing path you are on!

What does “designing your destiny” mean to you?

Answer this question in the comments, and sign up for Lisa Marie’s newsletter here — for entry into some wonderful gifts (see above).

Lance writes stories from his heart, aiming to inspire and motivate, as you align more fully with YOUR true peak. When he’s not here, you can find him hanging out with his family, riding a bike, or just generally acting goofy.   Sign up for the Thoughts from the Treehouse newsletter and get additional inspiration in your email inbox!

  1. Hi Lisa Marie! Hi, Lance!

the speakers actually hang around to connect with the attendees rather than sharing and bolting like many of the conferences I’ve attended.” I love that idea! Just a simple thing but shows a real depth and caring.

Lisa Marie, has there an upside to the tv show permanently deleting your file? What did you learn from that unexpected experience?

Thanks, both of you. Always great to meet another of Lance’s wonderful friends!

    Hi Lisa Marie,

Thank you so much for telling us more about yourself. It is always a treat to “meet” Lance’s guests! It was definitely interesting to read how you transformed as an “upside thinker” that is a great trait to have :)

As for me and designing my destiny…oh it’s been such a joyful ride! I feel so empowered these days and so happy to know that all of my dreams are within my reach. It is all about the thoughts, words and actions I choose to use and take. So to me, it means knowing that we are in charge of our own success and happiness not anyone or anything else.

Lance — thanks for the great guest, always a pleasure to meet new beings that are adding so much value to this world!

  3. Hi Lisa Marie, love the word “upside” as opposed to “positive”. Being positive doesn’t resonate with me but looking for the upside does! It’s a subtle but powerful difference. Congrats on what you’ve achieved. The world needs more of what you provide.

With regards to what designing my destiny means to me, I’d have to say it’s all about my Daisy List. I’ve developed a list of 100+ goals and dreams I have that I want to achieve before I’m “pushing up daisies”. This year, I’ve ticked 8 dreams (big and small) off the list so far. My Daisy List is my compass and motivation for what I want to get out of life.

    Hi Lisa Marie,
Great interview! I really like your response to question #7. I like the way you differentiate between being positive and being an upside thinker. I like what you wrote about “acting upon the unlimited possiblities in your life” — wow, that’s refreshing!

Now we know who your secret coach is who has helped you and your blog grow leaps and bounds. This is a great testimonial for the both of you. Yes and I needed the reminder in no. 7 that everything is unfolding as it should! Thanks Lance and Lisa

  6. Peggy says:

    Hi Lance!

Thank you so much for sharing and introducing Lisa Marie to us! I LOVED y0ur interview with her!

    Hi Lisa Marie,

I believe you have a critical message to impart on those you come in contact with. Powerful, moving, profound. I absolutely love this, “Upside is about seeing, and acting upon the unlimited possibilities in your life. It’s about taking responsibility for your choices and having the commitment and discipline to create a life full of happiness, success, and meaning. It’s also about realizing that whether or not it is clear to you, everything in the Universe is unfolding as it should.” So very true!

Creating my own destiny is exactly what I am doing. Inch by inch, little by little, sometimes in great leaps, sometimes in baby steps. The best way to predict the future is to create it. Looking back at my Passion Test results from last April, I’m exactly where I should be…standing in the middle of my own unfolding.

    Lance,
Thanks for sharing your coach with us :-)

As for ‘designing my life’… I have recently had my first coaching experience and it altered my life. I am now in the driver’s seat. I decide where I am and where I am gonna be. I CREATE my life and the things in it. As I am a creative person, designing my life is all about creativity — in all the senses of the word.
It’s quite a rollercoaster ride. The uphill is slow and full of anticipation. Once on top it’s exhilerating. And even the rides down are fun and they teach us so much about ourselves. I enjoy the ride every bit of the way.

    Thanks again.

And hugs to you Lisa Marie! My dad pounded me with “There is NOTHING you can’t do if you really put your mind to it!” It took me decades to really get that. He gave me creative license from the get-go, and tho I’ve sometimes made a crappy mess of my “design” efforts, the messes taught me a lot and helped me grow. At 62 I’m still a cheerleader of going for it, living full out and embracing opportunity.

I like that Lisa Marie cares about her clients more than they sometimes do. I know it’s true with myself. I can be a big bully to myself when I mess up. I’ve been working on this for the past few years and I’ve definitely lightened up, but I also have a long way to go.

I can see why Lance values his connection with you so much!

Lance, thank you for featuring Lisa Marie today. I agree with what she’s all about, and it’s how I try to live my life. I really do believe that we’re in control and can live life beyond our fondest dreams. I think it’s incredible that she coaches people in this capacity, and am sure that everyone whose lives she touches are a million times better off because of it.

    Love to you both!

  16. Angelia says:

Hi Lance! Hi Lisa Marie nice to “meet” you :-) Too funny on the hyphenated name — that made me laugh!

I really enjoyed reading your insightful answers and your over the top view of life. There were words that jumped off the page at me “life-long learning, empowerment, continue creating, incredibly committed”.
Powerful, directive words that touch me deep.

I’ve learned a lot about life the hard way. I really appreciate those “unexpected” lessons. I know I wouldn’t be who I am without them. I know myself better than ever (although still learning and growing). What seems strange to me is…I’ve never had the intense desire or drive to succeed. To be successful or powerful, or wealthy. My dad was a very simple man. He got the most pleasure from humdrum daily living. I looked at him in his small old house with hardly any new things and wondered, Why?
He died last week. He left desk calendars behind; twenty years of them. He would write notes each day. Just a sentence or two. The weather. An errand. If one of his kids called, visited, or sent a letter. If they graduated, if a baby was born, or milestone met. One sentence, that meant the world to him.

He was a simple, kind, and happy man who got pleasure in the little things. We tried a million times to get him to move out of that dangerous neighborhood, but he didn’t want to. He was happy there.

I really do feel I am like him. I’m content. Living to see a sunset, pet an animal, hold a child’s hand, coo over a baby, or open a door for a stranger. It brings life to my heart and I bask in the glow. As long as I can keep growing, learning, and appreciating life. It seems enough for me.

But if I really consider it, I have to wonder why that is? Would a life coach ignite some fire in me? Is that missing in me or are there other people like me?

  17. Hi Lisa, This was a great interview! Thank you for sharing it! To me-“Designing my own Destiny” means that regardless of what circumstances I may face in life-I always get to choose how I am going to respond to that situation. No circumstance or person can ever take away my “ability to choose” how I am going to respond to life. My parents taught me this at a very young age when they were helping me learn how to deal w/ living w/ Spina Bifida. My parents taught me that no matter what I may go through in life-I always have a choice how I am going to respond to those circumstances. I can choose to respond to them as a victim or a victor and it is all up to me!!!!!! Therefore since no one can ever take away my ability to choose-I can design my own destiny-through the way I choose to respond to life and it’s circumstances.

Thanks for this post — even from your picture I can definitely get how you uplift the room with your presence. As for designing my destiny, to me it means paying constant attention to what my instincts are telling me — what tends to have me feel warm and open in my heart, and what tends to have my body feel tight and contracted, and sticking with the former as much as I can! When I listen to my instincts like this I can avoid the trap of over-analyzing and indecision.

  19. Lance says:

@Jannie — Hi Jannie! Caring is something that Lisa Marie exudes…much like YOU!

@Evita — It all starts with that thought. And then doing something with it. You do, Evita, and it is really so great to see where that is taking you!

@Sami — Hi Sami. Seeing the upside really feels like seeing the possibility for me, and that’s pretty great. Your Daisy List, Sami, is something that is really great to see. And that you have it out there, for everyone to see — that says a lot right there about you and your belief in this…and I love that!

@Jodi — Hi Jodi. That idea of “unlimited possibilities” is really great, isn’t it! And that it’s there for all of us — if we just believe in what IS possible — is all sorts of awesome!

@Tess — Hi Tess. The secret’s out! While Lisa Marie has helped me in a number of ways, one of the most meaningful is “caring”. It’s a quality that she exudes so naturally, and being in her presence (phone, email, in person), I always feel like, at that moment, I’m her most important person. And I know she is a busy person, with lots of other people she makes feel this same way too. She is in the moment, when we are together. And that is the thing that I really have taken away and put to immediate use.

@Peggy — Hi Peggy. Creating our destiny, it’s not always doing the glorious and fun. Some moments are harder than others. And some moments may even set us back a bit. As we continue on our journey, though, these all become building blocks toward getting us moving down our path of life. And I love the thought of being in the middle of your won unfolding — wonderful!

@Trish — Hi Trish. Lisa Marie IS filled with positivity, and she gives a real belief in what is possible — all part of being on the upside!

  20. Lance says:

    @Lynn — That’s a really great perspective on life, isn’t it!

@Mimi — That you’ve had a coaching experience that has altered your life is really testament to both you and your coach. If you are not open to the possibilities, then the experience isn’t the same. So, this is so good to read, Mimi! And I will also say that my time spent working with Lisa Marie has also altered my life and given me even more belief in what IS possible. Keep enjoying the rollercoaster of life you are on! And always let the creative beauty within you shine!

@Suzen — Hi Suzen. Lisa Marie is filled with life and energy! It’s great to have her in my corner, both as a coach and as a friend. And there’s nothing wrong with crappy messes…look what they have taught you. That’s the real beauty of when we mess up — is that if we are open to it — there is something we can take away from that moment — that will make us better. Keep on ‘going for it’ Suzen…and know you’ve got a cheerleader in me too, cheering you on!

@Karl — That she really went for it, jumping in with both feet — is testament to what is possible if you believe! And then when you wrap love around all of that — you create some pretty special. And Lisa Marie has. It’s been an honor and privilege to work with her, and really get to know her on a more personal level. Thanks much for all your thoughts, Karl.

@Lisa — Yes, Lisa Marie is very generous. And the other thing along those lines, is that she really helps me to “think big”! She sees not only what is, but also what might be!

@Megan — You have said it so well, Megan! Confident and smart, mixed with compassionate and loving! This is a great way to live life, and Megan — I know you do this. Everything I’ve witnessed in you says all of this. So, know that very much, you exude these qualities, and it’s beautiful to see. As does Lisa Marie…and I’ve been blessed to be a recipient of all of this!

@Mama Zen — Seeing the possibilities…is a pretty great way to view life!

  21. Evelyn Lim says:

    Hello Lance and Lisa Marie,

Great interview! I enjoyed reading the answers that followed the questions. I also liked the clarification that positive isn’t the same as upside.

As for Designing Your Destiny, and without having checked out Lisa’s materials yet, I think of it as Creating the Life You Love. It is about consciously designing in a co-creative manner; interweaving threads of intent, possibility, abundance, inspiration, love, peace and joy as experiences unfold from the outside-in and the inside-out. It requires both intellect and intuition. Every aspect of your life is an authentic expression of who you truly are.

The above description is what I intend to bring across in my blog. Hopefully it can help inspire my readers beautifully as we evolve together.

    Namaste.

@Diane — Lisa Marie is a marvelous coach! And I love your definition — it’s about living as we desire!

@Angelia — Hi Angelia. I found the hyphenated name to be really funny too! (good choice, Lisa Marie, on not using it!) Sometimes it’s the unexpected lessons that have the most impact. And from what I know of you today, these lessons, while not always easy, have made you into a beautiful person. So, you talk about not having an intense drive to succeed. I think that perhaps you already are — it’s just that you are doing it on your terms. And those are the best terms, Angelia. Just like the wonderful story of your father that you have shared here, it’s not always about how much money you have, how new your car is, or how many contacts are in your Rolodex. In fact, real and meaningful success is exactly what I see in you — loving the moments of your life, and growing and learning in the process. That sounds like a wonderful prescription for a life well lived. Keep on being amazing…in your very special way…

@Shauna — Hi Shauna. This idea of choosing your response reminds me of a quote I really love:
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” ~ Viktor E. Frankl
We always have the ability to respond, and how we respond is up to us. What a great lesson your parents have passed on to you — no matter what — we always have the power to choose. And what a great attitude for life that you have!

@Chris Edgar — Lisa Marie’s personality and heart shines through in her picture. Talking to her and meeting her in person, though, was like this picture magnified. It’s at her core! Instincts…the gut feeling…listening to our heart…“just knowing” — when we listen to that voice within, and trust ourselves, great things can happen. Great to read this Chris!

@Evelyn — Hi Evelyn. I love your use of the word “creating”. That really says to me that we each can design our lives to be what we want them to be. And if we are doing that, we are not a victim of circumstance — we are a designer of life! And wow, Evelyn, I also really love the use of the word “authentic” too. Creating our life and living authentically…that’s a great place to be! And you very much shine this and more in all your writing!

@Wilma — Hi Wilma. Yes, Lisa Marie is definitely someone who has helped me get to where I am today! I am truly blessed to know her. And yes, it’s so great to know that she is walking this path too — and living and creating her life in beautiful ways. Love…as an action. Isn’t that great too! Wilma, you too have a very wonderful and happy Christmas!

Thanks again for letting us get to know Lisa Marie and what she’s about!

  26. Hi Lance,

Thank you so much for sharing your interview with Lisa Marie. I love her outlook and attitude. I am definitely going to sign up for her newsletter.

As for what designing my destiny means to me: It means that I have the power to create my reality and life. The key, though in my mind, is to know who I truly am and what is my truth and have my life reflect that truth. So often people live according to expectations from others or society. Not many people live according to what they truly love and believe. I think that is why we love heroes whether they are real or fictional. They live according to their truth and we all want to be able to do that but often do not know how. So for me, designing my destiny means creating my life according to my truth and knowing that nothing can get in the way unless I allow it to do so.

  28. Thank you for the introduction to Lisa Marie! I can’t wait to look at her site and learn more about her.

For me designing my destiny has a lot to do with first creating a large vision and then in some ways letting go of it. Otherwise I find myself trying desperately trying to control every step rather than letting each step unfold naturally. This creates more possibility with a lot less tension. And tension is what holds me back. I do believe everything happens for a reason, controlled or otherwise, but in the end it still has to do with that first vision.

I’m always enjoying your interviews. Your selection of interviewees is always interesting. (Of course, you know how to ask the most interesting questions too!) “Choosing love and choosing to love are decisions” — I believe that too.

  30. Lance says:

@Cath — Hi Cath. I think back to when my wife and I moved several times over the course of about five years. While it wasn’t always easy to pack up everything and leave familiarity for something new, there was also this sense of adventure that came with each move. And while we haven’t moved now in several years, what we have gained from this time is really that sense that life is an adventure. Will a move to a new country give you that? Perhaps. Whatever happens for you, if you move or not — there are still ways to help your kids see life as an adventure, and that risks can be so good to take. I wish you well, Cath, in all the decisions in front of you.

@Tim — Hi Tim. Yes, Lisa Marie has profoundly and positively impacted my life. And that’s really because the basis of all she does is rooted in caring. And one option to consider in coaching, is a group coaching program. I have done this, as well, with Lisa Marie. In a small group session, we spoke on the telephone once each week for several weeks — and then finished with a one-on-one call with Lisa Marie. Very great way to get coaching while keeping the cost at a lower investment. And an investment is really a great way to look at it — because this is really money you are investing in YOU.

@Nadia — Hi Nadia. Societal expectations versus our own “true north”…that’s something that is a constant pull. I do think that you, very much, get this. And live in this “true north” really very much. Nadia, that’s what is so beautiful about you — I just see you not being pulled in what society “expects”. And maybe it happens…perhaps even for those who have really mastered this, there can still be moments where we can be tempted by others expectations. You really do, though, follow your heart in such wonderful ways…

@Hilary — Hi Hilary. Lisa Marie is a truly wonderful person, and my life has been blessed by her presence in it. Thanks so much for sharing and caring here today.

@Stacey Shipman — Vision. That can be a hard first step, I think. And I think this because it takes us taking time to really think, to maybe look within, to search, to “dig deep”. That’s a task that important but not urgent. And tasks like this are all too often pushed to the back burner…until we suddenly realize our life has passed in front of us, and those possible dreams have lost all their steam on that ‘back burner’. And I see what you are saying about letting go — and how this doesn’t “force” it. And then it just starts to happen naturally and organically. I think that idea of control (and the tension that comes with it) make things feel forced. And forced doesn’t always work…Great thoughts, Stacey!

@Vered — Thank you, Vered! Lisa Marie is someone I most definitely find to be interesting. And beyond interesting, she is just a super great person!

  31. Hi Lance,

Thanks for introducing us to a Lisa Marie. I agree, she sounds like a kindred spirit of Bright Light in a dark world and we need all of that we can find! I loved the description of Upside. So many people are frustrated with the idea of positive thinking and don’t understand that its the choices we make when the hard times hit that make the difference and begin to change our lives for the better. It’s easy to make great choices on a great day, and some people wait for a great day to start making great choices rather then realizing that beginning to make great choices can lead to a great day. Lisa Marie’s Upside concept is a great tool to lead people to that idea. Well done!

I don’t think I’ve ever designed my destiny with much intention. I’ve just stumbled along, and somehow it’s worked pretty well so far. I guess whatever controls things was amused by me and helped me along.

  34. designing your destiny”

After years of trying to wrestle happiness out of life with longer lists, more work hours and self-help books, I reached a bottom and stood at a turning point. Depression, despair, and regret seemed to be my destiny and I needed to make a decision. I literally had to choose life or death. The one thing that had haunted me for years was this “idea” of the person I knew I could be. The husband, son, brother, and friend that I knew I could be, yet always fell short.

Through years of hard work, self-examination and guidance, I’ve become the man I was destined to become. I guess I sort of “reverse engineered” my destiny as opposed to designing it. I started with the small simple things that caused me fear and regret, and took action on them one at a time; with a lot of experienced guidance along the way!

The result was the realization that my happiness is not contingent on what I think or want my destiny to be. Just as my happiness is not reliant upon anyone or anything else. Experience has taught me that what I want, is not necessarily what I need. That if I just concentrate on doing great things each and every day, my destiny can be far greater than anything I could have ever designed for myself!

So for me, “designing your destiny” would mean firstly, getting rid of all the expectations and assumptions that we think our “destiny” should be. What we “think” will make us happy and we’re destined to do, rarely does. Secondly, learn how to accept the consequences of being yourself and that you have everything you need to be happy. Take each day and make it the best you can, hitting your pillow at night and knowing you made someone’s life better. Then let your destiny reveal itself to you.

You’ll be amazed and will realized you’ve sold yourself short of what you imagined your destiny to be!

@Diane AZ — Hi Diane. Yikes, I know..no computer..that could be a real challenge!!! That’s it, though, when we no longer have something that’s always been there (and maybe a crutch, perhaps) — it just leads to new discoveries for us…or revisiting long-buried activities. And that’s all good…

@Dr. J — Lucky, perhaps?? Or…maybe you’ve had a little more intention than you realize. @Jared — Jared, thanks so much for this wonderful and thorough reply. Self-examination and guidance are such a big part of what I see as “designing your destiny”. And through this, I see an increased awareness in who we are, and whaat that means for our life. And the idea of doing great things, and our destiny will write itself…yes! And great things can be big things or small things — and that they are great to us is what matters. I really appreciate your beautiful reply here today…

@Patricia — Hi Patricia. Wow, that IS a lot of moves! And I don’t think it matters at all if our life seems “backward” from what the typical life might be. That’s perfectly okay…because there was probably a reason for you to be where you were at each stage in your life. Lisa Marie’s book is really a workbook into that process of really desiging you destiny. Many questions to get you thinking about what really matters, and how you can get there. Thanks so much for reading and commening, Patricia…

  37. Liara Covert says:

Lance & Lisa-Marie, thanks for sharing the inspirational story. You remind us all that it is possible to create and realize dreams when we set the intention and our heart is in it. More and more, we hear about people shifting careers, relationships or other circumstances when it feels right. To listen to your true self, to learn what it feels like to be honest is a truly a life-transforming experience. Congrats on the latest stage of such a meaningful journey. You are truly inspirations, both of you for drawing attention to possibilities!
.-= Liara Covert´s Last Fabulous Post ..Create new pathways =-.

  38. Wow! This was inspiring and very genuine. Lisa’s caring personality really comes through. Of course, Lance, she is one of your friends!!!
And I love her quote: “As you stand at the threshold of unparalleled success, remember, a whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Are you where you want to be?“
So true and what a fabulous statement which coincides with one of my recent favorite thoughts
“The whole world is conspiring on your behalf.“
    Designing my destiny…
great question. It means exactly what I am doing. Living with a vision for what can be, taking steps to get there, and being fluid enough to let life in. And heaps of gratitude for what is without focusing on what isn’t.
Best to both of you! And Lisa, your conference sounds fantabulous.
    Katie

  39. Lance says:

@Liara — Possible. That’s a great word to remember. That I know of, we only have one life here on earth. So then, how do we want to really live that? It is indeed up to us, if we accept that it is. Otherwise, it’s not. When we think of “possible”, then we are actively making the choices that put our lives in alignment with our core. Liara, thanks so much for being here and sharing your wonderful thoughts.

@Katie — That’s the thing about Lisa Marie — she shines that “genuine” characteristic. And she cares deeply. And hey — she’s a friend of mine…and guess who else is? YOU! See, I see all of this in you, too, Katie — if you didn’t already know that. And — the whole world conspiring on our behalf — wow, that’s pretty awesome! And when we align with our own “true north”, all of that conspiring falls more into place, and that glorious life is right there! And to designing your destiny — your vision is grand, glorious, and beautiful! Keep on living the vision, awesome friend…

Upside Thinking is a perfect name.

I especially like it because I regularly review ideas and call out the upsides and the downsides.

    Beautiful questions, insights, and commentary.

  41. Lisa Marie says:

Okay, so I admit.…I have been a bit overwhelmed by these FABULOUS responses and the outpouring of kindness from so many people. I really hope to get to know each one of you on a more intimate level. I enjoy connecting with Upside Thinkers more than anything else. I married my husband for his Upsidedness (you won’t find it in the dictionary but if someone can help me add it to Wikipedia, I’d love to!) and had a very tough week last week because I realize it was missing in some of my relaionships. I thought, “How did this happen?”, especially for how intentional I am in all of my dealings. And, then I read all of these amazing blog postings and as I told Lance, some of them brought tears to my eyes.….the sincere goodness of so many people walking this planet together, and I felt warm inside again. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself here in the Jungle of Life. So, I’m sending love to each one of you and have some personal commentary below. And, check back as we’ll be revealing the winners on Christmas Day!

  42. Lisa Marie says:

@ Jannie — I love the Mistress of Mirth title! And, thank you for the advice in your latest blog interview “to forgive yourself.” You know, when my file was deleted I was really crushed. The upside is that I learned to be clearer about my expectations and chalk it up as practice for my next BIG interview. p.s. Thanks for being the first person to comment on the post.

@ Evita — Hearing you write about designing your destiny and the power of choice gave me chills. We are where we choose to be and if we don’t like where we are we can make a change. Kudos for recognizing that power and taking control. I can tell you are a force to be reckoned with! (And, thanks for sharing Unity’s article in your blog.)

@Sami — LOVE your Daisy List!!! I’ll be borrowing that! I call mine my list of Upside Dreams. I speak so much about the importance of having a clear, written PLAN so that we can move in the direction of our own choosing. Without a Daisy List, you’d be living someone else’s life. Thanks for the reminder, Sami. And, I LOVE your Passion vs. Profit post? I’d like to use it in my newsletter.

@Jodi — “Acting upon the unlimited possiblities in your life” sounds just like you, too! I love the snow on your site. It actually gave me a chill sitting at my desk in Miami, FL! And, of course, the post about loving yourself is incredibly valuable. I find that most of the people I come into contact with, no matter how successful they appear to be, haven’t quite figured that out yet. It’s right in alignment with Upside Thinking.

@Tess — Have you read the Desiderata series of books from Max Ehrman? I find that they help me remember this thought. I even found one of his quotes with the same sentiment on a piece of canvas and I can see it from my desk every time I look up from my computer. (p.s. Lance is pretty amazing that any coach would enjoy his FABULOUSNESS! He’s such a joy to spend time with. My husband and I said that he and his wife are people we would both enjoy spending time with and wished they lived closer.)

@Peggy — Wow! What can I say?!? You are an upside thinker ! And, you moved me to tears twice this week — once with your comment and once with your blog post “Who or What are You Breaking Yourself For?”. (Deep breath.…aaah.) Your comment about creating your own destiny inch by inch is exactly what it is all about. The journey of 1000 miles starts with one single step. It is not for us to analyze the step but to move forward. If you’re standing in the middle of your own unfolding, I’m happy to be standing right alongside you. May you continue to inspire others with your POWERFUL self!

@Trish — Thanks for the comment and for following Lance’s blog. We all have gifts that are unique to us. Sadly, not everyone shares their special gifts with the world. I am grateful that Lance willingly and openly shares who he is with the world, casting light in dark places and provides a place for wonderful people, like yourself, to gather and share who you are as well.

  43. Lisa Marie says:

@Lynn — Being an Upside Thinker isn’t for everyone. Obviously because you recognize its power, you must be an Upside Thinker! p.s. The chimes made me think about the music that plays in our soul and how our energy exudes music that brings joy or sorrow to those around us.…..

@ Miranda aka Mimi — CONGRATULATIONS on investing in your success and hiring a coach. We are all creative beings, however, we sometimes forget our own power. If you ask almost any kid at the age of 5 what they want out of life and where they’re going, they can tell you. Ask almost any young woman or man the same question 20 years later and they forget that they are in the driver’s seat! We decide where we are and where we’re going! Keep riding the Upside. There’s always an Upside! p.s. Mindful Mimi is BEAUTIFUL! Love your 2010 questions and kudos on your children’s book!

@ SuZen — Thanks for giving a shout-out to Lance for his ability to gather beautiful souls. And, thank you for the hugs…and for sharing the blessing that “messes” bring into our life. Sometimes my friends will say, “It’s so good to hear you’re not perfect, Lisa Marie.” Everytime it just takes me back a bit. I am grateful for the times I’ve fallen down and gotten back up again, knowing it’s all part of the journey. And, I’m thankful for your wonderful reminder.…..A bird does not sing because it has an answer.…..it sings because it has a song.

@Karl — It’s great to meet someone else who also cares about their clients more than they sometimes do. But, be gentle on yourself as it is one of the best gifts you can give to the world. That energy will give others permission to do the same thing! p.s. I don’t have a lucky pen (maybe I’ll have to get one!) but I do like the idea of using my mindset to create my own advantage when bringing in new business.

@ Lisa — Thanks for the kind comment. I’m grateful for Lance’s generosity and support.

@Megan — You made me feel so very special; thank you. Confident, Capable, Smart, Compassionate and Learned.…WOW is all I can say! I believe that we are mirrors of who we are.….what we see is what we get. So you and Lance must be Confident, Capable, Smart, Compassionate and Learned, too! Thanks for being a light in the world! Would love to get to know you better.….and share some funny cookies!

@MamaZen — Love the Zen of Motherhood. Thanks for sharing!

  44. Lisa Marie says:

@ Diane — Yay for not being boxed in!!! p.s. I love “Cheating Thoughts” as I believe it cuts to the core of what it takes to be successful with anything — Clarity, Commitment, and Discipline! Thanks for your wonderful thoughts.

@Angelia — Lance can attest to my focus on words and choosing the right ones as they point to where we will end up in life. Thank you for recognizing their power and for sharing your story.….especially the memories of your father. He was a wise man, leaving a legacy and creating his dash. Being content doesn’t mean you don’t have a FULL life; it’s just another way of saying that you find joy in the things big and small. Remember, we all get different gifts. Clearly, you are an example for others in life to take notice of all of the things you mentioned. Would a life coach ignite fire in you? I don’t know but I can guarantee that there is NOTHING missing in you. You’re perfect just as you are. And, yes, you’re clearly radioactive as I can see your glow from here. (Hope the tests go well.)
p.s. The funniest thing about that darn hyphenated name is that the one thing I wanted my whole life was a different last name. God sure does have a sense of humor!

@Shauna — Woo-Hoo! Great defination of Designing YOUR Destiny! And, I know that you are the kind-of gal that lives by that power of choice. We are all where we choose to be. Thanks again Shauna for sharing who you are with the world.

@Chris Edgar — I love that you have incredible awareness of your physical presence. Our bodies tell us more than most people are keenly aware of. I encourage clients to take 5 minutes at the end of the day and think about/list the de-energizers/de-motivators and energizers/motivators…the who, the what, the when, and the where. We need to minimize our interactions with the things that bring our bodies out of alignment because, as you mentioned, there is a reason! And, who wouldn’t want a warm and open heart. Thanks, Chris Edgar!

@Evelyn — Your definition of Designing Your Destiny is filled with the power of intention and authenticity. Thank you for commenting on the importance of intellect and intuition as that is what Emotional Intelligence is all about. Because I speak about leading your business and your life, I’ve read research that demonstrates how as professionals advance in their careers or grow their businesses, this is what determines their success by 95%! Amazing. Be not afraid of the authentic expression of who you truly are. p.s. And, oh my gosh — I love my yoga practice but Goenka Vipassana Meditation: Your Body As An Laboratory was quite an experiment. Thanks for sharing. The Diving Light in Me Bows to the Divine Light in You. Namaste.

@ Wilma — Oooooh, gratitude for the love you sent to me and the appreciation for Lance in this world. Three cheers for creating something beautiful from nothing at all! p.s. I LOVE your story on Context is King. My sentiments exactly!

  45. Lisa Marie says:

@Cath — I agree with Lance, moving doesn’t guarantee being a risk taker. For me, when I do what feels incredibly uncomfortable it has opened the door to panoramic success. One of my favorite sayings is, “Life is Change. Growth is Optional. Choose Wisely.” As, Lance said, whatever happens for you, if you move or not – life can still be an adventure. Keep riding the Upside!

@Tim — Well, talk about making a girl blush! Thanks for the warm sentiments, Tim. And, Lance is right, it is about making an investment in YOU! And, who’s more important than you?!? (There are always options out there to make coaching more affordable. I’d be more than happy to talk with you about that and answer any questions you may have. And, I do know some other wonderful coaches, too!)

@Nadia — Thanks for signing up for my newsletter and for sharing what designing your destiny means to you. I feel as if you’ve already read my book. In order to have the power to create your own reality, you must first know who you are and live that truth. I have a list of values and a personal mission statement and that is how I make my decisions in life. I, too, live simply because that is what I value. We’re all able to design and create what that looks like. p.s. Thanks for stepping out and sharing in your How Much Money is Enough?

@Hilary — You’re a beautiful writer. Thanks for the comments.…and for being such a caring daughter and niece. The world needs more of you.

@Stacey Shipman — VISION. Ah, yes. To see clearly ahead…to fortell my own future…that is designing your destiny. And, yet you speak of “letting it go” so as not to control it. I think it is right in alignment with “There is No Failing When You Go For It” and is a great mantra for any year. I suppose my constant ranting about having a clear vision, going after your vision, and being true to your vision are floating around the Universe bouncing off of buildings in downtowns and suburbs alike. Since this is word you resonate with, I encourage you to reach out to Rev. Margaret Sheperd, owner of the VisionBuilders Institute. She has a weekly TGIM (ThankGodIt’sMonday) message that is always timely.

@vered — I’m happy to meet another Love is a decision gal. After all, if more people made that decision, the world would be even more wonderful! More Upside Thinkers!!!

  46. Lisa Marie says:

@ Wendi — Your comments were especially meaningful as you’re someone who knows How to Live a Great Life. Clearly, you my friend are a beacon. Our words do matter. Thank you for the reminder.… and for the encouragement to keep spreading the word about Upside Living!

@Diane AZ — Ahhh, the joy of being “where you want to be.” It is bliss. And, yet questions like this make us go deeper and think about where we would be if.…..

@ Dr.J — Everything we do is a choice, intentional or not. We even choose not to choose! Glad to hear you’ve been fortunate that the Universe has smiled on you often. May you continue to be lucky all the days of your life.

@Jared — The dreaded “should” word. Yes, “designing your destiny” is not about expecting, assuming, or should-ing on yourself. Being happy isn’t about “thinking” either; it’s about being. Great insight about the importance of learning to accept being yourself and making the lives of others better. Ralph Waldo Emerson said “To know I have made someone’s life better, this is to have succeeded”.

@Patricia — Fantastic comments and spectacular journey, Patricia! You’ve been designing your destiny all along! I love how intentional you are and unafraid you are to ask for what you want. (And, who knows? Santa just might bring you my book which has been hailed as “life-changing”!) To new design projects, abundance, prosperity, and financial wealth in 2010 for you! Cheers! p.s. How jazzed I am to know that you’re shooting for a best-selling book! When will it be finished?!?

  47. Lisa Marie says:

@ Liara — It is possible to create and realize dreams when we set the intention and our heart is in it. However, dream building has gotten a bad rap because people forget that it takes more than just setting the intention to turn possibility into reality. Many thanks for sharing your comments and honoring Lance for the wonderful work he’s doing in the world. p.s. Upside Thinking is about creating new pathways by generating new thoughts! :)

@Katie — Isn’t Lance the bomb!?! I’m so glad to call him my friend. So, Katie…“As you stand at the threshold of unparalleled success, remember, a whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Are you where you want to be?” You didn’t directly answer the question.….but I do love your addition that the whole world is conspiring on our behalf. Much appreciation for bringing up the power of gratitude in desinging your destiny. It isn’t always easy to focus on what have and let go of what we think we deserve. p.s. I hope to see you at the conference! And, count me in on the Levity Project, too!

@J.D. Meier — Thanks for your comments. I really do look at the world in terms of energy that comes from others — either upside or downside and try to limit my interaction with the latter. p.s. I LOVE that you know the power that comes from standing on the shoulders of giants. Me, too! Look around the next time your up and you just might see me waving my Upside flag!

  48. To respond to you Lisa.…
ABSOLUTELY. I wouldn’t be standing anywhere else!!!
    You rock!
    Katie

  49. Lisa Marie says:

Back at ‘cha Katie, I already knew the answer, however, that empatic and resounding “YES!” are so good for the Universe to hear. You make the earth move and rumble! (p.s. LOVE that you’re up and making things happen in the wee hours of the morn’.)

  50. Lisa Marie, you are a living, walking, breathing example of how to bring out the best in others! The world needs more Lisa Maries helping people catch on to this thing called leadership. Indeed it’s too rare to find those in the leadership industry who truly care about their clients (I mean, truly love them!)! That came out so clear in your interview, especially how you see the best in everyone. I am certain another reason you are so good, Lisa Marie, is because you have also experienced “heartache, disappointment, and pain.” You obviously chose to go better instead of bitter and thus can lead others to the same outcome! I am certain your January event will be wildly successful! Lance, thank you so much for introducing Lisa Marie and her work to all of us! Namaste, Holly

  51. Lance says:

    Holly,
Thank you so much for your caring support. Lisa Marie is such a giving and caring person, and so knowing her has been a gift in my life. Just like knowing you, Holly. I feel this same love and caring from you, and having you here today just lights up my heart. You are a gift in my life, Holly, just as Lisa Marie is too. What a wonderful world we live in!

  52. Lisa Marie says:

Well, Happy New Year! And, thank you Holly. Better vs. Bitter, an interesting battle for sure. Earlier in my life the latter put up a heck of a fight but over time Better won! I’d love for us to connect offline. Lance tells me what an inspiration you are to others and I can tell you are an upside thinker.
