What Does Courage Look Like?

“The more you do, the more you’ll do.” ~ Anonymous

Courage.  It's an interesting thing.

A guy risks his own life to save another life.  That's courage.

A woman enlists in the armed forces, and fights to protect a country.  That's courage.

A child stands up for herself when an adult has abused her.  That's courage.

A man goes back to college in middle age, to explore a new career path.  That's courage.

A woman rebuilds a relationship with her mother.  That's courage.

Definition:  mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.

Mental and/or moral strength to persevereEach of these examples are that.

As much as we might talk about it – about the things we're going to do, the changes we're going to make, the life we're going to live – what it really comes down to is taking that first step (and then taking those "first steps" again and again).

First steps…again and again.  That's it – stepping into the unknown to move beyond where we are today.   Sometimes it's exhilarating .  Sometimes scary.  And all sorts of in between (and lots of what might feel like "nothing extra special" moments).

  • Might be late nights working on some new idea – just you and a notebook (with lots of things crossed out).

  • Might be daily trips to the gym, even when you're tired and don't feel like doing it again.

  • Might be starting up your computer, and sharing another personal story on your website.

  • Might be picking up the telephone and sharing your idea with others.

  • Might be going to one more networking event – even when that's not your "thing".

  • Might be trying a new derivation, after every other one you've tried hasn't worked as planned.

  • Might be {anything that takes some sort of action on your part}.

Courage.  Sometimes big and grandiose – although oftentimes small and unnoticeable to the average onlooker.

Take those small steps – steps, with courage and with action – into the big and amazing dreams within YOU.  Others may not notice.  You'll know, though, that these steps are steps of courage into YOUR best life.

Choose to take a step – TODAY – into your own amazing-ness.  Step with courage and belief, and know that the Universe will support you.

Hello Jean!
And that’s it – getting out there and doing it – and living the adventure that becomes our life. (and I really believe you ARE doing this – what you share on your site is so infused with YOU in such wonderful ways…)

Thanks so much for visiting today!

I went back to college in middle age to explore a new career path. I didn’t think of it at the time, but in retrospect, I guess it was courageous. It opened a whole new world of possibilities. Thanks for the validation, Lance. I hope you are doing well.

Hi Lynn!
That’s so awesome – YOU, going back to college – I *love* it!! And that definitely qualifies as courageous – you were stepping into something new and unknown. And the thing is – sometimes it takes some life experiences to really figure out what matters most to us – but we have to make the decision to act upon these – and YOU DID!!

Thank you for sharing this post. I like how you said about this “Take those small steps — steps, with courage and with action — into the big and amazing dreams within YOU. Others may not notice. You’ll know, though, that these steps are steps of courage into YOUR best life.” This posts made me realize that if only I have the courage + action to finish my thesis one step at a time and with this I can move forward to the life and career that I love. I pursued my Masters to be able to be competent enough to find a great job that I love but I didn’t have the courage and will to finish it and instead procrastinate. Thank you for inspiring me to have the courage to pursue my dreams and goals in life. I like to read posts about life and career advices, and I found this blog, htttp://liveitforward.com, it has posts for those who wants to find great insights about finding and working on the life and work that you love.

Lance, this post gave me chills. Courage is such a vital thing to develop, and often the fears and doubts are so big and loud that the seed of courage gets squashed.
I loved this:

Hi Lance,

I wanted to stop in and see what content I was sharing, since we’re in the same tribe. And I’m glad that I did. I’ve actually come across your site a couple of times in the past. I remember because of your header, and had no idea that this was actually your site. I guess I didn’t put 1 and 1 together. Anywho, I really enjoyed the post buddy. I absolutely love your titles when I see them in the Triberr tribe. So, glad to know that I have an idea now, of what to expect when I see a post from you.

I really enjoyed what you had to say about courage. It’s something that we definitely need when achieving our goals. And I think you broke it down very well. Thanks for sharing your insights. Look forward to future post. 🙂

I hope you’re having a wonderful Friday, and wish you a great weekend as well. Cheers buddy! 🙂

Deeone,
Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment!

Over the course of the last six months or so, I’ve shifted my site – and have brought on a team of eight other writers, who also contribute monthly. So…as much as I’d like to take credit for all the great titles – many of them belong to the other writers who write in this space. It reminds me, too, just how powerful titles can be…so thanks for that!

Have a great weekend – and I look forward to getting to know you even better!

Tess,
Awesome-ness –> you, stepping out with courage today!!!!!

And – thank you. As much as I feel like I’ve taken a step back in this space – and have, in that process, stepped a bit away from both my writing and with my online connections (which has been difficult) – I also just really have savored the “feeling” on not being over-committed (which is self-imposed).

By the looks outside right now…I think I’ll be getting my shovel out this weekend!!!

Such a great and inspiring article! I think that courage isn’t such an important thing like it had been for centuries. But there are some knights in the 21st century as well, for example my husband:)
