A W E S O M E !!

Rain hair.

Getting grass stains.

The smell of crayons.

Picking up a q and u at the same time when playing Scrabble.

A W E S O M E !!

Those little things in life that happen and we don't even really think about all that much.  You know what I mean?  Like dangling your feet in the water.  Or maybe…jumping in and doing a perfect cannonball!  In the grand scheme of things, these are really pretty small moments in our life.  Still, are they not what makes this life we are living grand?

I've been reading a book that is filled with all sorts of these examples!!  And what a FUN book to read!

The Book of Awesome.

And reading this book is all sorts of AWESOME!

It all had its simple beginnings as a website – created by a super great guy, Neil Pasricha.  His website, 1000 Awesome Things, begin as this list of those moments we have in life that really are awesome…and at the same time, they are just simple things that could happen any day.

Simple things, small moments…that are simply AWESOME!

And today he is releasing a book  that chronicles these and more!

The Book of Awesome.

As I paged through this book, I just couldn't put it down!  Reading it brought up all sorts of great memories, and found me shaking my head in agreement!  AWESOME is all around us!  And there are all sorts of moments we all have that really are all of that – AWESOME!

This book is such a feel-good read!  And even more than that – it's a reminder to me of just how cool those little things are that we sometimes just take for granted…

Like popping bubble wrap!!!!!

A W E S O M E !!

Right up my alley!

Foot massage during a pedicure.
A pedicure.
Vanilla yogurt.
Watching my niece’s wedding video on YouTube.
Crawling into bed when you are really tired.
Cool spring morning air.
etc. etc. 🙂

Very cool!
My favorites:
found money in clothes you haven’t worn since last season
3 or more consecutive green lights
speeding warning instead of a ticket 🙂
picking a really good watermelon
eating a really sweet watermelon
first kisses
any neck kisses
smell of newly mowed lawn

The video was well…awesome! I think Neil’s book is a classic. I believe it makes a great book for graduates, for friends, birthdays, a book I can read out loud to my mom when I visit, a book one can read in the car with kids on a road trip (no electronics allowed;)…the list goes on. Oh and we’ll add
Lance and his blog!
To the list of awesome!
Thanks for all that you do too add awesomeness to the world. Know I appreciate you.

Thanks for the post.

I loved watching the YouTube video! One of my favorite parts was where it said “Waking up before your alarm clock and realizing you’ve got a lot of sleep time left.” So true!

I have heard about “The Book of Awesome” MANY times over the past few weeks. It’s great to see that such a positive message is being spread around. There are indeed so many awesome moments to be grateful for every day.

I love the descriptive examples you used in the beginning of awesomeness. They bring back many memories for me too of playing scrabble and playing with crayons when I was younger. I even loved the smell of freshly cut grass. Thanks for sharing!!

I’ve heard about this book many times as well….
*You* are awesome!
This blogging community–awesome….
Being up early enough to watch the harbor wake up–the sun rise and spread tendrils across the sky–awesome…
A genuine smile that lights up your face..or better yet a belly laugh–awesome…
Chocolate–way awesome…
The right musical note, melody, song…to match my mood—awesome….
A text, note, email to say How are you I’m thinking of you–awesome…
Lots and lots of awesome….
And I now have a smile on *my* face thinking about tons of awesomeness:)

Stacey Shipman April 15, 2010 at 12:50 pm

It is a fun book, isn’t it! I loved the one about swimming and getting changed, and the feel of cotton on your skin. Brought back very happy childhood memories!

Matty April 15, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Thanks for the heads up on this book. I didn’t know about it before. I love how he found simple things to be so awesome. When you think about, little things are .

I love it! It is great moments that create a great life, I believe. Often we lose out on a great life by waiting and thinking something is going to come along “outside” ourselves and make us happy.

That is not how life works. It happens from the inside out. It is in these wonderful moments you are speaking of!

I think love is like that too. In order to be loved we need to generate love inside ourselves.

Once again, well done!!!

Wilma Ham April 15, 2010 at 2:23 pm

YES, life is awesome and until we really get that, even when we think the circumstances do not look that awesome at all, we miss out every minute that we lose seeing the awesome.
I loved the awesomeness of old tupperware, that really cracked me up for some reason.

I am also sharing your Starfish post on my Sunday post…. I love your stuff & always feel the need to share!

Thx Lance!

Karl Staib - Work Happy Now April 15, 2010 at 4:40 pm

It all comes back to the simple things. We have so much to celebrate if we just open ourselves to seeing the every day beauty. I can’t wait to read this book. I love how Neil breaks things down so we can all connect with the stories. Hopefully this book is a wonderful success.

Steve April 15, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Lance April 15, 2010 at 9:29 pm

@Lynn – Love your list Lynn!!! Although….I have NEVER done the pedicure thing!!! And – a little known fact: vanilla yogurt is one of my favorite things. And it becomes even more awesome for me….with a big scoop of peanut butter!

@Erin – Awww….Erin, you are way too sweet! And simply AWESOME yourself! You, sweet friend, as such a bright shiny light in this world….

@Tom – Ahh….those warnings (instead of speeding tickets)! And…I’ll smell that freshly cut lawn with you. Kisses…I love ’em!! But I’ll politely decline on those neck kisses from YOU!!! Hmmm…maybe they are directed toward someone else, huh!!

@Tess – You know, as I was writing this, I started thinking exactly that. What a great book to have sitting out for people to thumb through. What a great gift it would make. And – I love yours – that you can read it to your Mom or to your kids (safely!!). And…to you, Ms. Awesome…you are super sweet!!! I am glad to know YOU!!

@Greg – Hey Greg!! Getting a few extra moments to snooze can be pretty sweet! (now, I just have to figure out how to do that more!!) Neil has written a wonderfully fun book to read, and I am sure that’s why there has been a lot of buzz about it recently! And now…today!!…it’s available to buy! And it would make a great addition to anyone’s library of books!

@Jarrod – Hi Jarrod. I know!! Just thinking about each of these – as I have read them – just brings back great memories and lots of smiles! What a feel-good moment!! A great book it is!!

@Jenn – Jenn!!!! Lovely…like YOU! POP! POP! POP! Everything’s poppin’!! Woo-hoo!!

Lance April 15, 2010 at 10:01 pm

@Joy – Hi Joy!!! Sweet, sweet Joy!! You bring so many smiles here! YOU are wonderfully awesome! Mmmm…did someone mention chocolate??? (I’ll be right back!) (okay I’m back….yum!) And your harbor…every time I think of it, I really do think how awesome that must be! YahooOoo!

@Stacey Shipman – It is a way fun book!!! Neil hits on so many things that are AWESOME!! He missed having YOU in there, though. Because I know, Stacey, that you are all sorts of awesome! And swimming…sweet friend…I did that tonight…and it DID feel great to get back into some nice dry cotton.

@Matty – Hi Matty! This is just such a FUN book to read! It really is all these simple things in life, that when we see them in print – we can relate…and just get this feeling of YES, I KNOW on our face! It’s a great book to have!

@Lauren – Hi Lauren!! Right! When we can see that there are wonderful and amazing moments all around us – wow! What a great place to BE at! And Neil helps to remind us of some of these small moments – that really are pretty darn awesome! And in seeing that, maybe we can see that awesome does indeed start within. Love that thought Lauren, thank YOU!!

@Wilma – Hi Wilma!!! And what is really so neat about this book is how we can all find something (or more likely…lots of somethings) that we can shake our head in agreement with, and really see that “awesome” can come in some pretty small packages….and it is still awesome, no matter how you look at it!

@Jody – Hi Jody!!! Ha!!! So….you have a great way to annoy your husband!! Being with friends…that sure qualifies as awesome!! And so do YOU!!! What a sweet, sweet friend you are! You ALWAYS make me smile!

@Karl – Hey Karl! Neil has written an amazingly fun book to read! And what I love is how you can just pick it up, flip it open to wherever…and there you go! Awesome-ness!! A little every couple of pages! And that’s it…it is there every day….right in front of us….

@Steve – Hi Steve!! Neil writes a very fun and uplifting blog…and his book is just an extension of that!! Great stuff!

@J.D. Meier – Yes, that’s it! Neil helps to jog our memories with words that bring up awesome memories! And that…is AWESOME!!

I have seen that 1000 Awesome things site before! And always thought it was one of the coolest sites in the universe! Kinda like Lanceland. In fact, I think Lanceland could well have a name change to AwesomeLand. Or SuperGreatPersonLand. Or everybodyLovesLanceLand.

Just a quick comment for this morning. Gotta go wash my hair! Shampoo is awesome! Water is awesome! Electricity to blowdry my hair with is awesome!

COFFEE is ‘waaaaaay awesome too!

Mindful Mimi April 16, 2010 at 6:32 am

What a great little video. And what a sweet hommage 🙂
I will surely check out that book. I think it is one that we could all write ourselves with our own little thigns. But like with all things creative: we have it all in us to do it ourselves. The secret is to just do it instead of waiting for someone else (in this case Neil) to do it and then say ‘Oh I could have done that’.
So let’s go DO things, BE things. Take action instead of waiting for inspiration!
Thanks for that great Friday messages.

Lance – how about that? Another vanilla yogurt fan. It makes an instant dessert. Today it will have sliced banana in it. Tomorrow – could be crumbled graham crackers. Blueberries. Peanut butter – hmmm. The possibilities are endless. 🙂

Great video and great concept for a book! I have a copy of this and as I have been reading through some of the other author’s reviews, I keep thinking – what a fabulous idea for a book – just sharing all those neat little things life offers us, that make us smile, make us giggle, and just plain make us feel good!

Thanks for sharing this Lance!

Hi Lance! No surprise that Mr. Awesome (YOU) would find this book – you mean you didn’t ghost write this one?

I think LIFE is awesome – like Jannie said, her shampoo, the water, the hair blower you just plug in and it works. Its everything Lance, absolutely everything!!!!!!!!! About time we wake up and realize that!

Tim April 16, 2010 at 10:07 am

Hi Lance:

Wow, very cool video and book! I’ve been hearing about this for a while and the more I read and hear about the book, the more intrigued I am. When I see the video, I see that most of the awesome things are really simple, everyday things. I’m willing to bet that, if we approach our day with a sense of gratitude, we will become more aware of these awesome things that surround us. Thanks for a great post and your awesome blog!

Lance, I’m reading this, too, and it IS awesome! Your post about it is AWESOME (love the rainbow… makes me happy!). I think this book makes a great guy gift — like a brother’s birthday, or father’s day, or … a “just because” day.

Thanks for reviewing it!

PS – I’m not sure I agree that “rain hair” is awesome, though, but then again I don’t like anything touching my hair unless given prior permission. (smile)

I just joined the party, Lance, and here’s my two cents:

Counting your friends is . . . awesome.
That first sip of coffee.
Finding money at the end of the bills.
A tax refund.
When someone finishes your sentence.
Unexpected praise.
A touch.
When you ‘lock out’ on your bench press.
Doing one more rep than you thought you could.
An offer of help right when you need it.
Your dog’s greeting.
Winning the competition.
A bullseye.
Knowing you are loved.
